Re: Security updates on linux mint.

I have to say, I'm starting to find this incredibly suspicious. There has been a rash of these 'I'm concerned over Mint security' posts by people with brand new accounts recently. Must admit it is confusing when you come from Windows to Mint when you are used to having to have a load of security pu...

Re: so you update your mint every time you see new updates?

I update the moment I notice the updates. I've not had a problem with this behavior in years.

Re: I wrote my first Python 3 app!

I stumbled upon a really nice book on Python 3 yesterday at the library. It is an O;Reilly book entitled "Introducing Python", by Bill Lubanovic. This book is extremely easy to follow and I may buy a copy once I return this one. I started learning Python because I couldn't find a good bookshelf type...

Re: The direction I dream for Linux

You could always write your own software. I asked if a certain type of app were available and someone suggested that I learn Python 3 and create the app myself. Well, I thought it would be quite daunting, but learning Python 3 has been surprisingly easy so far.. and I've already written a handful of...

Re: Links from within programs don't work

Many programs have links to websites built-in, like "Help online", "Click for homepage", "How to use", "Credits", stuff like that. When I click such a link in a program (it doesn't matter which one), my browser opens with a blank page and then stops, it never connects to the net to fetch the conten...

Re: How do I delete my LinuxMint account?

If you had done any research into Linux at all, you'd find that the report from Experian was either a bad attempt at humor or a gross misunderstanding on your part. Experian thought they were secure, now we know they were wrong. What makes you think they know what they're talking about when it comes...

Re: ~/.cache/deconf backup issues

The problem has to do with a permissions issue with the file ~/.cache/dconf/user. That file doesn't exist until you run the Mint Update app. Once the Mint Update app runs, it creates ~/.cache/dconf/user and changes ownership of the file itself, as well as its parent folder, to root - which means it ...

Re: Chromium Won't Launch

Sorry, I'm talking about the web browser Google Chrome, which I find Mint refers to as Google Chromium. I was unaware that there was another program with a similar name. Which program does what, please? Chrome is available from Google, as far as I know it isn't in the official repos. The package in...

I created some Linux Mint stickers

I spent a few minutes in the gimp and created a couple Linux Mint stickers which I believe are suitable for desktop backgrounds. I've packaged the stickers and the .xcf file templates in the attached .zip file in case anyone wants to open them in the gimp and make changes. I've also included a scree...

Re: Opinion: What is the biggest single hurdle keeping Linux becoming more "mainstream"?

I think the biggest hurdle is the thought that " if this doesn't work, I can always go back to Windows ". If a person has a fallback option, that option will most likely be chosen during periods of frustration. I switched over from Windows 98 SE to debian GNU/Linux back in 2001. At that time I was f...

Re: Software manager gone.

Revian, You win the prize, (which will be determined). Earlier in the day I DID uninstall mintinstall. I didn't finish what I was trying to accomplish right away so I didn't associate that missing icon when I came back later. The command gksu mintinstali did not open the software manager but that m...

Re: Software manager gone.

My software manager has disappeared. The icon is gone from the menu and I can find no reference to it anywhere. It was there right up until the time it disappeared. Anyone know where it might have gone?? Thanks for your time in advance. Upon viewing my post, as it appears in the forum, I see that I...

Re: Inspiron 13 touchpad super sensitive, impossible to use- Mint 18.2

Sorry but toggling touchpad on and off is just not practicable way to use a ultra compact notebook (if you mean "turn off touchpad when you want to type and turn it back on afterwards"). If by this you mean use a mouse instead, the whole point for me is not to have to carry around a mouse with this...

Re: Inspiron 13 touchpad super sensitive, impossible to use- Mint 18.2

All Just wanted to report back after trying the suggestions made by some. Unfortunately, the touchpad is still too flaky for me to be user friendly. At this rate, I may have to abandon my desire to use Linux on this laptop and fall back for now on Windows, which I loathe but at least can use withou...

Thanks, revian, for jumping in while I was off doing some other stuff I needed to get done. NintenAkira, let us know either way, whether that works or not. You're welcome. I was actually hoping you wouldn't be angry that I jumped in, but I was trying to get something in before he ran the wrong comm...
