About to take the plunge but, I'm stuck, looking for advice please :)

So I backed up all the files I want to my external hard drive. For two days in a row, the hard drive assignments have been the same when running these live sessions off of the bootable DVD I made for Linux 19.3. I decided tonight that I was going to install Linux. Then I get to an empty check box wi...

Re: Just need a bit more help please :)

You should indeed be able to do all of that. Make sure the sdd drive is selected for installation of grub though. If you don't get presented with a menu and the system goes straight to windows, change the boot order in BIOS to give priority to whichever drive sdd actually is. Okay. What did you mea...

Re: Just need a bit more help please :)

And I think I saw on a different website someone say that Linux HAS to be installed to sda1? No it doesn't matter. You can have multiple distributions on the same drive and modern systems have the EFI partition first in the table which would occupy sda1. I edited my last post, but also wanted to as...

Re: Just need a bit more help please :)

You're also saying that if I plug in an external hdd, that will change the drive assignments daily? Not quite sure I understand why that would be. No, I'm saying it might . It depends on how BIOS reports the drives to linux when it boots. 99% of the time they don't change. But... I have a T430 lapt...

Re: Unexpected Shutdowns

Hi :) My Linux Mint shuts down "randomly" (or at least without clear pattern so far). The screen simply turns black and after some time I get the Cryptsetup unlock screen. What I've tried so far, without luck/errors: Reinstall Linux Mint Run Memtest86+ The last shutdown I observed was at Aug 27, 14...

Re: Just need a bit more help please :)

Yea I'm looking at the drive assignments now, and the current drive assignments don't match to what I have written down in my notebook. Drive assignments are not fixed, they are what gets reported by the system when linux boots. So what might be sda one day might be sdb the next day. Normally it is...

Re: Just need a bit more help please :)

/rofs is read only file system, that's a live session, also why the name is 'mint'. You have to get away from saying C:, F:, G: and that stuff, because Windows treats those SINGLE PARTITIONS as "drives" and that's not physically how the stuff is laid out on the actual disks. If you are talking abou...

Re: Just need a bit more help please :)

In Linux forget the Windows drive designations such as C:\ F:\ G:\--they no longer apply. This is a concept misunderstood by many newcomers so don't feel alone here. In Linux the drive connected to the first sata port will be designated /dev/sda, the next sata port will be /dev/sdb, and so on. You ...

Re: Just need a bit more help please :)

Check it out for yourself, I've never experienced the issue of drive assignments changing every boot when multiple drives have been attached. It may be a quirk of their particular hardware. Yea I'm looking at the drive assignments now, and the current drive assignments don't match to what I have wr...

Re: Just need a bit more help please :)

I don't know who told you that you shouldn't use drives assigned to certain letters. Say you have two or three HDD or SSD in the machine, linux would assign them all different letters. HDD1 = sda HDD2 = sdb HDD3 = sdc On each of those drives you would have partitions. The numbers of those partition...

Re: Just need a bit more help please :)

From what I was able to extract from your OP is your running a desktop PC with multi drives in it and have lots of stuff you don't want to lose. You appear to know how to add a SSD or HDD to the system so why not Buy a new SSD and disconnect all other drives having only the New SSD in it. Install l...

Just need a bit more help please :)

Okay so I created a bootable DVD of Linux Mint 19.3. I also was able to run a live session from the DVD. I asked a few questions here before, I think it was about drive assignments, C:\ D:\ and told that I have to figure out what my assignments would be, because I want to install Linux Mint 19.3 to ...

Re: Looking for more help regarding Live DVD

For games, you will be dual booting for the foreseeable (outside of the oculus rift, I don't play games, so no expert), for everything else there is almost always a linux alternative to your favourite program, all you need to do is ask. Actually, I dual booted years ago with Windows 98SE and Window...

Re: Looking for more help regarding Live DVD

SWEET!! I got the monitors the way they should be (sigh) awesome! I feel better now. Thanks for your help again :) Well, that's usually my problem is some websites out there have scripts that try to take over your machine, or try to install things without your knowledge. And in Windows all it takes...

Re: Looking for more help regarding Live DVD

Excellent! Glad you were able to get it up & running! In all likelihood, you won't need to install your motherboard drivers. You are currently running the "default" Nouveau driver for your GeForce card - - this will provide adequate performance, but you'd need to install the "real" proprietary NVid...

Looking for more help regarding Live DVD

Okay, so last night I finally took the plunge, was able to get help with making the DVD, and am currently running Mint 19.3. I have previously run version 19 in a VM. So what exactly can I do here? Surprisingly enough my internet and sound works, and I didn't have to install any drivers. What about ...

Try changing boot priority in BIOS to 1st bootable drive: Removable Media 2nd bootable drive: Hard Disk Drive 3rd bootable drive: CD-ROM Don't forget 'Save Changes and Exit' or whatever your BIOS needs. And a Reboot. One of the function keys used to do that. It will tell you somewhere on the BIOS m...

Re: How do I make a DVD bootable?

Just had a look at it. It appears the built-in Windows burning program does not support burning .iso files. We have on the Windows computer a third-party burning program called CDBurnerXP (don't be confused by the "XP" ending, it has nothing to do with Windows XP). I would advise downloading this p...

The only thing I see on the disc, is a single, packaged .iso file. No folders and no anything else.
Okay, the disc has been burned incorrectly. What program on Windows are you using to burn discs?
the native burner that comes with windows
