Re: my 2 problems with mint

Yes, BIOS beeps are quite an enigma.

The OP's machine is most likely still sending power and signal to the LCD, but is not receiving any signal back from the LCD controller to the system.

I would suggest you open the Disks program, and run a Smart check on your hard drive.

Re: modesetting driver

How much ram is in that old laptop ?

Better yet, this Terminal command will produce an overall system and hardware list. Please copy the entire output and paste it back here in a reply. (those code tags are a good idea)

Re: Failed updates

The only other thing I can suggest would also install those level 4 and 5 updates. Thus, I will caution you beforehand , to have a current backup of your system, and that you are confident in restoring your system if something breaks. Only use if the above is clear to you . . if not, please ask ques...

Re: Failed updates

Perhaps, could those updates be level 4 and 5 updates, which do not show (hidden) in the Update Manager ?

You could temporarily go into the Update Manager's preferences and put a check in the "Show Level 4" and "Show Level 5" checkboxes to see.

Re: Installing LinuxMint Xfce starting from a basic Ubuntu installation

apt install mint-meta-xfce

Of course you will need to add the Mint repositories to your software sources.

Edit: You will need to tell us which version of Ubuntu you are using, before we can tell you the correct Mint version repository you will need to add.

Re: bluray playing-menu not available

When you open VLC, and choose Open Disk from the menu, in the pop-up window, you don't have that "Do not show menus" checkbox checked do you?

This may be way out there, but do you have a keyboard combo to switch screens ? Possibly using the Fn (Function) key ?

Re: Failed updates

Yes, must have been a server that was unreachable the first time, or the server was being updated at the time.

Looks like there is a full plate of updates.

After using those commands Update Manager should now show these updates.

Use this Terminal command; with it you will see any errors in the output.
If you then would like some clarification, copy the entire output, and paste it back here enclosed in code (</>) tags in a reply.

Re: GameCom 780 surround sound

Try this:
Install PulseAudio Control (pavucontrol) if it isn't already installed. Once installed, open the program, and go to the Configuration tab. There you will be able to set the profile to your preferred surround setting.

Hope it works for you. :)

Re: How Do You Install Cinnamon On Ancient Workstation?

Lubuntu version 16.04 uses the same system underneath as Mint 18.3. And it is meant to be lightweight . . only thing I can say, is if you have good Internet, try one till you find one that works. :-) Again, as Catweazel stated, they took out a bunch of stuff that was needed for old hardware in Ubunt...
