Re: Unable to create anything on /var/www/html/

And what followed? Does this mean you can only use the terminal to install wordpress? No chown, no chmod, no symlinks ? Did it actually work? how do you edit files? how do you add plugins? You can use wordpress on any one of several million actual apache web servers on linux worldwide. I don't under...

Re: LAMP again, using Ampps

Thanks. a CMS is a php script or program on a web server that generates html on the fly and serves it up for a web browser when requested. The problem is the CMS itself has to read, write and execute in the appropriate locations. It's an issue of owners, users, groups and permissions that I don't un...

Re: LAMP again, using Ampps

Still trying to get this sorted. Ampps has a root /usr/local/ampps/www which shows in the browser as localhost. I think I am right that it is really unusable because it isn't in my Home folder and therefore requires sudo to edit anything. When I try and install my CMS I just get a string of chmod er...

Re: LAMP again, using Ampps

I opened a ticket with the Softaculous support desk. They replied thus: Hi Tim, Open Terminal and run following commands: sudo cd /usr/local/ampps/apache/lib sudo mkdir bck sudo mv ./libapr* ./bck/ sudo apt-get -y install libaprutil1 libaprutil1-dev libapr1 libapr1-dev xhost local:root If you are st...

I had uninstalled apache through t...

Re: lamp again (groan!)

thanks Petermint. I didn't know you could install the modules with Software Manager. I had done it with the terminal. This morning I am trying to get wordpress running. I have phpmyadmin installed but I can't see it, access it or start it so I can't enter the database info into the Wordpress install...

Re: lamp again (groan!)

I got it - it's chmod -R not chmod -r and when you get no response at all that means success? eventually: timbo@timbo-HP-Pro-3135-Microtower-PC ~ $ cd/var/www/html/testsite bash: cd/var/www/html/testsite: No such file or directory timbo@timbo-HP-Pro-3135-Microtower-PC ~ $ cd /var/www/html/testsite t...

Re: lamp again (groan!)

Okay, I will take the advice from you both and this time install the apache server directly onto mint. I'll just make a quick system backup first... and report back later. I don't think I really understand the difference between the Home folder and any other folder. I'll do some reading while the ba...

lamp again (groan!) <Abandoned>

I need to do some fairly undemanding web development. I need a local lamp setup to install the CMS and various plugins. This isn't the first time I have done this (about the 6th) and it is always a problem. I a not very comfortable with using my main mint OS as the basis for the lamp server because ...

Re: Launch a programm. XAMPP and Wordpress

thanks minitux. That is working for me now. Ugly but functional. I had been staring in disbelief at my mint system in the realisation that I had to memorise a long series of keystrokes and type them faultlessly into the terminal just in order to run a program. That has got to be one of the most stup...

Re: Understanding the directory structure of linux?

If you want to install wordpress locally on your desktop you need to set up the right environment, effectively a web server which is not actually open to the web, known as a LAMP stack (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP). There are several ways to do this Install apache etc directly onto your linux mint and...
