Re: <SOLVED> WiFi isn't working after updating the latest Kernel update.

The TP-Link TL-WN722N v1 has the Atheros AR9271 chip. I saw some on ebay for around $25.00 including S/H.

Re: Recover files from encrypted data before Linux crashed

Not sure. I have never attempted that scenario.
Just search for "recover encrypted data" in the search bar.
Good luck.

Re: Recover files from encrypted data before Linux crashed

Some help here:
viewtopic.php?f=46&t=251774&p=1354381&h ... s#p1354381

That's why I keep all my data on a separate partition (Data1) and encrypt/decrypt it at will with LUKS. I also backup the LUKS headers, etc. to Data1.
Good luck.

For tags, I use Easy Tag. For editing, I use Audacity, and for normalizing I use Gnormalize.

Re: Problems with AMD / Radeon

I built a lot of systems with the old AMD Athlon single-core CPUs back in the day. A lot of the mobos had bad power capacitors (Soyo was a big one that closed its doors after a ton of bad caps on their mobos destroyed their business). I replaced all the cheap Chinese caps with Japanese and/or U.S. c...

Re: Mint has a BIG Problem.

I created a LM18.3 Cinnamon 64-bit .iso USB flash drive (32GB) boot drive yesterday with Unetbootin, and it would not boot.
I then created it with USB Image Writer (LM) and it works great.
For what's it's worth.

Re: Problems with AMD / Radeon

Darn. Could be a bad RAM slot on the mobo, since it worked before (I installed the codecs from the button on the welcome screen. I added half a GB of RAM. No more booting. As broken as before. Same error message. It's not the RAM: I've swapped it out.) I would remove the additional RAM that you inst...

Re: Problems with AMD / Radeon

I would edit grub with: gksu gedit /etc/default/grub But since you can't, I would use e for Edit on bootup. I would add the following line in the appropriate place: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash noacpi" Then I would "comment" all the other (GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=&...

Re: Problems with AMD / Radeon

Try this in Grub:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash noacpi"

Make all the others comments with an "# ".

Update Grub:
sudo update-grub

Reboot.

Re: WiFi isn't working after updating the latest Kernel update.

JeremyB may have wired internet access. I do not. Which makes "apt-get install" quite a challenge :-) That's why I always keep a USB WiFi Adapter that works on Linux handy (no external drivers needed). TP-Link TL-WN722N WiFi High-Gain v1 USB Adapter works in Linux. v2 does not work in Lin...

Re: Déjà Dup installed in 18.2 KDE, but fails to launch

After upgrading the kernel to a higher version, I have noticed that one or more apps no longer work. So, downgrading the kernel allows these apps to work again. I would try that. Sometimes, executing the app from a terminal works, but not always, as the kernel rules. Later on, after upgrading the ke...

Re: Cinnamon 3.6.6 Crashes

I had this same problem recently, but solved it by using Timeshift to restore a snapshot I had made 2 days earlier. The problem is that I updated the amdgpu, mesa, opengl, radeon, nouveau, intel drivers as recommended in Update Manager. Upon reboot, I got the "Cinnamon has just crashed. Using F...

Re: Lenovo C260 won't shutdown with LM 18.2

The GRUB fix I used worked, until I put a new 1TB HDD in that laptop, then installed LM18.3 Cinnamon 64-bit from a live CD. The laptop shutdown and restarted normally for several days, until I installed all recommended updates. Then, BAMMO! Will not shutdown/restart normally. And, my previous fix do...

Re: No sound Samsung laptop

Could be a bad headphone jack. But, if it plays in Windoze, and speakers & jack work, then the jack is fine, and it's a LM issue.

Re: Alternatives for Rhythmbox?

I have been using VLC for music & videos since I dropped WinAmp & RealPlayer (seems like a century ago). VLC does all I need, but I know there are a few others out there that 'get the job done', also.
Find the one that suits you.
Happy Hunting.

Re: How does a Desktop environment affect performance?

That's probably because the other variants of LM use less overhead.
You can try another variant of LM, or I personally would upgrade the RAM to a minimum 4GB and upgrade the CPU to a minimum 2.20GHz.
I upgraded all 4 of my 10 year old laptops and they work well on LM18.3 Cinnamon 64-bit.

You can also test the memory in the Terminal:
sudo memtester 1024 5

Good luck.
