Re: Mint is fast after fresh install but slow after a while

Mint RC1 would run in VirtualBox, but not sure of the USB procedure necessary to boot in place of using a CD. I have read of several folks in this forum doing just that already. They may have insights to share. Those services to be disabled from that article do not seem to bear much resemblance to M...

Re: Mint is fast after fresh install but slow after a while

I can certainly sympathize with the video chip situation. Sis and VIA are not the most supported. However, I get excellent results in Debian and Mint. Luckily, 3D whiz-bang eye-candy is not something I desire. I muchly prefer solid and reliable graphics. If at all possible, could you download the RC...

Re: strange install problem

Have you tried to boot your computer with just the Mint Live CD? I have never used the mint4win application, but many have enjoyed using it. With the CD in the drive, reboot the computer. The Live CD should load up and give you a test drive without making any changes to your current setup at all. Th...

Re: Modems

I have seen some really good reviews of the U.S. Robotics USR5637 56Kbps USB High-performance V.92 modem, but it appears to have just been discontinued in the past couple of weeks. There may still be some in stores or online. Edit: I did find it in stock... http://www.amazon.com/56K-USB-Modem-Window...

Re: Mint is fast after fresh install but slow after a while

From my perspective, Mint 7 RC1 is MUCH better than Ubuntu 9.04. so I can imagine how polished the final version of Mint 7 will be. As for services and sessions, in the menu, look for "Administration > Services" and "Preferences > Sessions." The Aurora theme packaged with Mint 6 should really not be...

Re: Open Office Line Spacing- (Solved -Thanks!)

Even though I rarely have to interact with any Windows users, this bit of info has been filed away for future reference. Honestly, I had never considered this approach. Any way to get those other poor souls in your group to detoxify themselves of their Microsoft habit? Ha, ha, ha...

Re: Mint 6 is Fantastic!

I was able to get Mint 6 64-bit GNOME to run on my hardware when just about everything else was a no-go. I have been using Mint since 3.0 "Cassandra." Whilst PCLinuxOS is a very good distro, Linux Mint seems to push all the right buttons just a bit better for my needs.

Re: Installing latest Intel drivers

Are you testing out your video with Mint 6, Ubuntu 9.04, or the Mint 7 RC1? Just for the record, I have tested the Ubuntu 9.04 and Mint 7 RC1 on the same Intel hardware. Mint 7 RC1 ran like a champ whilst Ubuntu 9.04 ran like a turtle. As I have said previously, Clem can and does perform miracles.

Re: What's Going On Here?

Maybeway36 is still working on this, but I notice he is not posting much in the forums. I had a link to his Filefront storage space, but do not seem to have filed it properly. The combination of Debian Lenny + Mint Felicia ( Glacix ) works great, but it is still a work in progress. If you want to gi...

Re: Mint is fast after fresh install but slow after a while

One thing to remember is that XP is a 2001-era operating system originally designed for machines of that time period and the last century. Linux Mint and the other distros you have been testing are modern operating systems probably not more than six months old, thereabouts. Eight years is a very lon...

Re: Will Linux ever be ready for the desktop?

So, will Linux ever be ready for the desktop?, eh? For me, it is all I use. Do people actually still use Windows? I have not used Windows since March of 2000, and have been using Mint since 3.0 "Cassandra." Yeah, being based on Ubuntu is a mixed bag, but overall mostly positive. For a while there, I...
