Re: Acer Aspire - Linux 18.3 Install Problem

No need to desert mint. The xfce version is less resource hungry than Cinnamon if you have an old machine.
Having said that I have Cinnamon running very nicely on an 6-ish yr old core i3 laptop, no lag (ssd helps) and greased lightning on a 2017 core i5 zenbook (both Asus).

Re: Acer Aspire - Linux 18.3 Install Problem

Getting into BIOS: reboot, then at the ACER splash screen press a key, probably ESC or TAB or F2 or F10 or similar...look for a prompt when it boots. If no prompt then it's either try google, or trial and error until you win. Once in BIOS make sure that there are no security settings, turn off secur...

Re: Tablet accelerometer sensor on Lenovo Helix

I had the same problem on an asus zenbook 2 in 1...not seeing the accelerometers. After doing a fresh install of 18.3 I tried updating iio-sensor-proxy from github files but the computer say no. I eventually found a .deb file from here https://www.ubuntuupdates.org/package/core/artful/main/base/iio-...

Re: level 5 Firmware update

Just out of curiosity, if having installed this update caused problems (it was a Level 4 on 18.3 and so far OK), would Timeshift be able to restore to an earlier fully working system?

Thanks

Re: most portable mobile/laptop

"Portability is in the eye of the beholder". I've installed it on an Acer netbook, can't remember which exact model...limited capability and small low res screen. But light. More usefully on an Asus Zenbook flip UX360UA, core i5, SSD and lovely 13" screen, weighs in at 1.3Kg. 18.3 Cinnamon worked "o...

Re: Non-Windows laptops?

http://www.novatech.co.uk I couldn't use a Dell at home. For too many years I had to use an obsolete, slow, corporate fleet Dell (D600) that was originally supplied complete with the remains of previous user's lunch in the keyboard. I wouldn't want the Dell logo leering at me now I've left the comp...

Thanks for your quick reply. The two commands ran no problem, but update manager still won't update (it seems to think I'm not connected to the internet, which I am. Upgrading via terminal gave me this: jon@Jon-Zenbook ~ $ sudo apt-get update Get:1 http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial-security I...

[SOLVED] Upgrade to 18.3 fail

EDIT marked as [SOLVED] as I did a reinstall (as outlined further down the thread) which took less time then I have already spent on this (not to mention others' time) and as a bonus I have a nice squeaky clean system without all the mess I have put in over the last year or so. Thanks to all for you...

Re: Should i install TLP for my linux mint 18.2 laptop

I've installed it on an Asus zenbook ux360ua and it works well. Near doubled battery life for no obvious decrease in performance if just typing and web browsing. Also installed on an older Asus a52-something but since this is almost always connected to mains it's a bit harder to assess the benefit.....
