Re: Which discontinued project do you miss the most ?

The old Gnome Modem Monitor and Network Monitor panel applets. They showed you your network traffic/speed live in the panel without having to open up a big Network Manager window. It was a quick efficent way of seeing if you had network problems. That existed a long time ago in Gnome 1 and gave me m...

Is ndiswrapper a viable solution any more?

Most of us are on 64 bit GNU/Linux these days and ndiswrapper only works with MS Windows drivers older than Vista. There were few 64 bit XP drivers to begin with and those, I'm sure, are showing their age by now. So why do we even have ndiswrapper any more? Is it even a viable solution today? If it ...

Re: Installing Mint on older portables: wifi in particular

I also have been re-purposing people's old Vista machines (only desktops) for the Elderly and have found this site helpful: https://www.wirelesshack.org/top-linux-compatible-usb-wireless-adapters.html Hope that helps. My biggest problems these days is with the old integrated NVIDIA graphics and the ...

Thank you! That is indeed my case. I'll give that a try after taking a snapshot with timeshift.

Re: Why So Many Bad Kernels.

Telling from Bob's inxi report above , Bob is one of those users, who upgraded their Linux Mint 18.3 to kernel series 4.15.0. If my memory serves me right (of course it does), there have been quite a few complaints about various serious problems by users of Mint 18.x, who had upraded to kernel seri...

Re: Cinnamon crashed after installing the new kernel.

I find it strange that the two listings of your graphics info indicates that you are using the intel driver. To me that sounds like you are using the integrated graphics controller instead of the NVIDIA card. I wonder if that is because it failed with the nouveau driver. Someone more knowledgeable t...

Re: [SOLVED] Quit button login screen not working (on tap)

Thank you for trouble-shooting this for us. I just wanted to acknowledge that you helped me as well. I installed Mint 19 Cinnamon on my ZaReason Strata 8110 and was unable to select any other account except the first one created. I knew they were there since I was able to login from a terminal at <C...

Re: How to use Driver Manager without internet

Thanks for the info, Dave. That did the trick. I was able to boot into the old kernel and access the Driver Manager from there. Turns out I had bigger problems with the video driver. NVIDIA-304 won't run with the 4.13.0-26 kernel and nouveau would freeze my display at times. I ended up installing th...

How to use Driver Manager without internet [Solved]

How can I bring up the Driver Manager without internet access on Cinnamon 18.3. I just want to bring it up to toggle the existing drivers, not download updates in the intervening half hour. My intel wifi got messed up with the upgrade to kernel 4.13.0-26 and disconnects after a few seconds. When I b...

Here is the one I used. Re: How to make Mint friendly for elderly personal use

If your users are creating files that others can read but not write and you want them to be able to you may need to change their umask setting in their .bashrc file. The default should be 'umask 002' to allow read/write. Here is a tutorial on changing that: https://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/understandi...

Re: b43 driver installation issue.

You should just be able to install "firmware-b43-installer" from Software Manager. This will also install 43-fwcutter and download, extract, and install the broadcom driver. Then you just activate it from the Driver Manager. If you don't currently have access to the internet on the installed compute...

Re: How to make Mint friendly for elderly personal use

When you say: the browser would not save into a usb directory, they couldn't transfer files from one chip to another. I understand you to mean you are trying to save files to USB storage like a thumbdrive, external hard disk drive, or maybe an SD card. My father had permission problems moving files ...

Looks like you do have the rtl8188ee driver installed. I'm wondering if you're having the problem described in this Ubuntu thread: https://askubuntu.com/questions/763508/realtek-rtl8188ee-drivers-in-xenial Anyway, from the answer there it looks like there is a better 3rd party driver available at Gi...

Multiple network proxies based on network

I installed 64 bit Cinnamon 18.3 a few weeks ago and love it. Everything works great so far. I can set up my network proxy by selecting Network Proxy from Network settings and then choosing Automatic. My problem is I can only type in one Configuration URL. I have to change this when I switch from ho...
