Re: Linux is dead? Seems pretty alive to me.

The problem with market share numbers is they are fundamentally flawed in that they use internet connections to judge while many machines never see the light of the web. Still there are many more Windows machines than Linux one's because up to now windows has "just worked".... with win10 the "just ...

Re: Which version of Linux Mint do I need, 64-bit or 32-bit?

Here's what I found about laptop number one: Dell Inspiron 3521 - 15.6" - Pentium 2127U - 4 GB RAM - 500 GB HDD Operating System Windows 8 64-bit Edition So I guess it's a 64-bit processor. I'm going to look up what my other older laptop is too. Well Linux Mint 64-bit can be used on a 64-bit system...

Re: Software that you would like to have for Linux

What software would you like to be available for Linux? Not only alternatives to Windows soft, but also specially for Linux? Lightweight Amazon Kindle app. Which can read the stuff I bought off Amazon. Sorry if someone's mentioned this before...or if it is available. The cloud reader works but is a...

Re: Mint 19 stable = forcing hands just like Microcrap

Well said MDM. I've always have read the documentation of the software I have used, especially OSes. The OP wants full control of his system? Then both Linux and the BSDs will give it to him alright. However it is up to him to read the proper documentation and learn how to to use the controls proper...

Re: Who no longer trusts or uses Facebook?

I have always been a believer that the free market takes care of its own problems. If you do not agree with facebook policies then just dont use it. As it stands right now congress is looking to impose more laws on social sites. That IMO is the worst thing you can do. Just let the free market take ...

Re: Vega 8 Linux Mint Problems

Honestly, at this point, I think it's best to stay in recovery mode until they release a stable version and use another computer for gaming. You probably could get Mint 19 to work on the 2200G APU but this will require you to learn more about Linux and put in some effort. It is also likely you will...

A) This is old news, superseded by now B) Intel had revoked its initial intel-microcode patch package. So had Ubuntu. Around June, a bugfixed intel-microcode package had been made available. C) Where exactly did anyone tell the (buggy first) intel-microcode patch could damage the cpu? If I recall d...

Re: Mint 19 stable = forcing hands just like Microcrap

plus I read some articles saying the microcode could damage the CPU which is the other reason I don't want it. Spectre bug was created intentionally to make you install microcode to make you destroy your CPU to make you buy a new one. It's all making sense now! /s Yes Really, this is the first time...

Re: Vega 8 Linux Mint Problems

You may have to install a PPA to update the kernel to something newer then 4.15.x. A poster managed to get this working perfectly by using the the 4.18.x-RC3 kernel and updating Mesa to a more recent version. Edit: Update your BIOS. Btw, who was the poster? Don't recall, look for other Ryzen threads.

Re: Vega 8 Linux Mint Problems

To be clear and upfront, I just recently put Linux Mint on my laptop for testing after not using it for some time now. I'm relearning things I have long forgotten.

You can update Mesa the same way you install a newer kernel then Mint provides, by using a PPA.

Re: Are Linux distributions really so different from one another?

if you compare something like mint, ubuntu, and debian, they are going to be similar, however, if you compare mint to something else, like manjaro or arch, for example, much of the software isnt remotely cross-compatible and the distros are very different. Yes Arch based distros like Manjaro are ve...

Re: Nerdy types dismissing Linux Mint.

Another question I have is why to people "distro-Hop"? I mean all Debian based distributions work the same in the end, just that Mint has taken the functionality to a new level. I have little experience with the Red Hat stuff other than Mandrake back in the day. Not attempting to troll or start a f...
