Frankly I haven't seen a 32-bit desktop CPU in 10 years maybe, so unless cogs and wheels are driving yours, 64-bit it is.
The OP's computer has to be pretty old not to have a 64-bit CPU in it.

Re: Mint 19 stable = forcing hands just like Microcrap

it can be told from /var/log/syslog or with the help of "journalctl -b". This would work if the OS were capable of loading a normal DE. As you can see from the screenshot above, that's impossible! Every reboot gets me to this screen. Before updating the system (installing the dumb microcode), all r...

Re: Mint 19 stable = forcing hands just like Microcrap

linux-image-generic has always had a list of dependent packages, i.e. packages which it will pull in, in case they are not present or not up-to-date. Ubuntu has added 2 more packages to the dependency list for good reasons. In the end being as safe from the Spectre and Meltdown vulnerabilities as p...

Since I am biased here, I recommend Xfce.
How does xfce assist the OP to transition from Windwoes?
It just works without issue.

1.5 GB of ram isn't enough to run cinnamon on any computer.
Yeah Mate or Xfce would be the better bet.

Re: Nerdy types dismissing Linux Mint.

I have done Manjaro. They have a Stable branch that doesn't incorporate changes that are vetted. I like Arch, but for every day Mint is my OS. BTW< I upgraded from 17.3 to 19 beta and the only issues I am having so far is with themes. Yeah I installed Mint 19 Xfce on my Thinkpad T430 yesterday even...

Re: 32 bits vs 64 bits and RAM usage

Ok, i've been reading. It seems that it could speed it up. Thanks for the tip. Your welcome and I highly recommend even to folks who are not tech minded or power users to get SSDs as that will usually give them the best performance of any upgrade they could do. The difference between HDDs and SSDs ...

Re: 32 bits vs 64 bits and RAM usage

Sounds like to me that will be worthwhile to double your memory and go to 64-bits. To my way of thinking the minimum hardware should be a 64-bit CPU no older then five to six years and 4GB of RAM. Of course the heavier your usage is the better hardware you should have. Have considered getting an SSD...

Re: 32 bits vs 64 bits and RAM usage

If you can upgrade the memory to 4Gb then yes it will be worth it to go to 64-bits. Even with 2GB of RAM 64-bit Mint should work fine depending on your workflow.

Re: Linux Mint made me life better, no for real

YES - - there is so many cases, of where an installation of an Linux System, has revived some old hardware. 8) however, like the Windows System, the Linux System is also evolving as well. :) Yes I have revived older hardware that were almost useless with newer versions of Windows for friends and fa...

That's strange, did you check the AUR for a WiFi driver? Performance of both distros should be about the same.
No I did not, what is an AUR?
The Arch User Repository. You will have to enable it in the Pacmac GUI Software Manager/Updater, but it offers extra applications and drivers.

I tried Manjaro on my wife's old laptop and it would not find the wifi, and I had some issues getting used to it, so I went back to Mint LInux XFCE since it was a lower spec'ed machine.

Re: Nerdy types dismissing Linux Mint.

Or Arch Admins.... I know that I asked this somewhere, but what is the fascination with Arch, and why is it seen as a "hard distro"? I would think that Slackware would win that title? I never hear about anyone using Slackware any more as well. Arch is probably the mist difficult to install, the mos...

Yeah I have read on other forums that MSI seems to have the best support for Ryzen APUs while ASRock is rather poor.

Re: Will Mint 19 have support for Ryzen 2200G/2400G

You can look up the price for Asus PRIME A320M-A at your local retailer. I'm not building a gaming rig, I just wanted more processing power without having to invest in an overpriced graphics card. I can understand that. The Ryzen 2200G and 2400G APUs will make for decent Linux machines once the iss...

Re: Will Mint 19 have support for Ryzen 2200G/2400G

How much did you pay for your board? Two things never to cheap out on when building computers: the motherboard and the PSU. I'm not however saying that you should go out and buy the most expensive, but spend a bit more can help you avoid problems later. Come to think of it, since I been building my ...
