Re: Grub menu

Grub customizer installing is a bad thing to do. It changes grub and adds lot of things. I have seen positive comments about GC, even from experienced Linux users. I don't know how to handle GC.Now the pen drive grub is controlling the computer booting. I know the pen drive controls the booting ord...

[SOLVED] Grub menu

I have Mint 19.1 XFCE - 64bit installed, it's the only OS on my laptop. A couple of days ago I used this laptop to install the same Mint version on a thumb drive. Now, when I start my laptop, the Grub menu shows both Mints, the latter at the top of the menu, the 1st below and shown as sda1. BTW, I n...

Re: Nvidia and Intel graphics card

Overclocking is different since you're running the chip outside of the manufacturer guaranteed parameters. Limiting clock speeds is different since you're staying within the specs. To quote from your inxi, by default your CPU has variable clocks within this range, anyway: min/max: 800/4100 MHz That...

Re: New Linux Mint 19.2. is coming to town soon...

No, Mint has its own upgrade mechanism, point releases use Update Manager and for major releases there's an upgrade script supplied, see instructions here for upgrading from 18.3 to 19, for example: https://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=3615 In other words, you never have to do a fresh install if you don't...

Re: Nvidia and Intel graphics card

Thanks for that, gm10. reduce screen brightness - long done. reduce clock speeds: increasing clock speeds/overclocking is high risk, decreasing them is not? Edit: I just saw the exchanges between you and Pjotr, and will not touch it since I am not an expert, as you know. background processes: diffic...

Re: New Linux Mint 19.2. is coming to town soon...

Pjotr, I am well aware of the risk of instability of a rolling release. What I find off-putting about a non-rolling relase is that I need to do a fresh install every 5 years. That means everything I installed will have to be reinstalled, all the settings reset. I believe in Synaptic there is an upgr...

Re: New Linux Mint 19.2. is coming to town soon...

Funny you should say these things. As a Linux beginner newbie I played around with some distros in VM hosted on Win 8.1, and came across several I liked, although I could not get Manjaro to work. I finally decided to "go the whole hog" and install Linux on bare metal, opting for Mint in October last...

Re: Nvidia and Intel graphics card

Yes, but it shouldn't be much while inactive, so I'm not expecting a considerable increase in battery life for you with the BIOS switch. That said, I'd be very interested should that assumption prove wrong, so let us know how it turns out! I forgot to mention in the intro that, soon after installin...

Re: Nvidia and Intel graphics card

Often you can disable the additional chip in the BIOS/UEFI, that would be my first approach. Thanks gm10, that did the trick. Besides that, it is clean and does not require installing extra stuff with the added risk of problems. Otherwise you can switch GPUs in the NVIDIA settings app. That was my ...

[SOLVED] Nvidia and Intel graphics card

I recently bought a new Lenovo laptop (inxi -Fxz details below) and have been disappointed by the battery life: 2 hours max. When I installed Mint 19.1 XFCE I had a problem with the cursor freezing, and after some research realised I should look at the Driver Manager. The Nouveau driver was installe...

Re: Dual boot installation

OK Flemur, I'll think about another thread, although it seems to me if you can't solve this, a reinstall may well be called for.
Anyway, many thanks for your help.

That's why I called it a "hack".
OK. There are hacks and there are hacks. The text in capitals scared me a bit, but I am prepared to try this one. Doesn't the text of that grub.cfg file mean that it gets overwritten regularly? If that's the case the hack is only a temporary measure. Or am I wrong?

Re: Dual boot installation

** Edit: I dual boot with manjaro; the /etc/fstab on mint has: LABEL=MANO /mnt/MANO ext4 defaults, noauto, user, noatime 0 2 where /mnt/MANO is an existing directory (in Mint) that I own.I (u)mount it with mount /mnt/MANO Without this line in fstab, the manjaro installation would show up under /media/...

Re: Dual boot installation

You /boot/grub/grub.cfg entry for Solus would be like menuentry 'Solus SDA11' { root=(hd0,11) linux /boot/vmlinuz-4.15.0-55-generic root=/dev/sda11 ro initrd /boot/initrd.img-4.15.0-55-generic } NOTE: you'll have to change the values for vmlinuz- and initrd.img-, which you can get by ls -l /media/p...

Re: Dual boot installation

Did you try sudo os-prober ? (lists foreign OSs); are you seeing the grub menu? No, I had not tried it, but I have now, and here is the output: /dev/sda11:Solus (4.0):Solus:linux /dev/sda2@/EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi:Windows Boot Manager:Windows:efi The root for Solus was defined as sda11 duri...

Re: Dual boot installation

I installed Solus today on my test machine where there is Win 8.1 and Linux Mint 19.1. I basically created a new partition, sda11, that I designated root (/) during the installation. I designated Mint's /home directory as home for Solus - Solus itself left the "format" box unticked. Note: I used a d...

Re: Dual boot installation

Good stuff, Flemur, just what I needed. Tomorrow I am going to install Solus on my test machine, where I have Mint in dual boot with Win 8.1. The latter is a "left-over", I don't use it anymore. I do want to keep Mint as the main distro on that machine, so will follow your instructions when I instal...

Re: Dual boot installation

But isn't the writing, i.e. altering, by the 2 OS'es of the other's files the type of activity that causes problems for each other? No. That would happen if you used the same username on both OSs. Making a different usename for each OS means they won't interfere with each other - that's the point o...
