Re: Triple boot system will not boot

As a last throw of the dice, I changed the boot order in the BIOS, not being sure which disk drive my 18.04 ext4 install was on. Originally, I had not been able even to get into the BIOS - in some way running the live environment version corrected this. Next time I booted, my old grub menu appeared ...

Re: Triple boot system will not boot

I went for broke and installed 19.1 alongside existing installations as allowed for in the install menu. The installation appeared to go smoothly but when I removed the medium to boot up from the disk drive, I just got a black screen with a blinking cursor top left. The BIOS boot order was correct. ...

Re: Triple boot system will not boot

Thanks, yes it will load the W10 media USB. But it doesn't give me an option to repair anything. It gives me the option to install W10, or to start in Safe Mode etc, plus some others - Enable Boot Logging, Debugging Mode, etc I will try to run off a new 19.1 environment, my current install is 18.04,...

Triple boot system will not boot [SOLVED]

I run Mint Mate 18.03, Kubuntu and Windows 10. The default boot is Mint. I updated both W10 and Mint this morning. Now, the machine doesn't boot. It freezes at the mobo welcome page. I get a message 'Please Press F2 or Delete to Enter UEFI Bios' but nothing happens with this. I tried a live boot but...

Re: rsync problem

Yes, thanks, philotux, this worked!

So, if I want to use rsync to copy a large directory with sub-folders, I should open it in the desktop?

Is this requirement just a quirk of Linux or Mint, or am I missing something obvious? Maybe it's time to go to v.19?

Thanks, again.

Re: rsync problem

Thanks, Flemur.

Exactly, rsync cannot find 'essen_a.png'.

The question is - why not? It is on the desktop as shown here. It is a real file with content which opens.

Any ideas what could be going wrong?

rsync problem

I would like to transfer files between PCs on my home network using rsync ( I think this uses ssh automatically now). Starting simple I tried to copy a file, essen_a.png, locally. The path below in terminal is the path shown in file properties. Obviously, something is not right! Screenshot at 2019-0...

Re: Deleted Boot and Data Partitions

gm10, you are a star!

I am very, very grateful! Everything is as it was - I can hardly believe it.

I had some backups but these were all over the place on another machine, USBs, cloud.

Deleted Boot and Data Partitions [SOLVED]

I accidentally deleted both partitions from a HDD, including boot and data. This disk is now unallocated completely as far as I can tell. I wish to recover these partitions. As I ran a dual boot, I can still boot into W10 x64. Can I recover my deleted Linux partitions using Windows? Or could I do it...

Re: Transfering HDD contents to another HDD

Thanks again, phd21, but I am not getting anywhere with this. None of those terminal commands have given me access to the disk drive, e.g. howard@Snow-White ~ $ sudo chown -R $USER:$USER /dev/sdd2/ [sudo] password for howard: chown: cannot access '/dev/sdd2/': Not a directory howard@Snow-White ~ $ T...

As a follow up, this is the error when I try to transfer a file from one disk drive to this new one (3.7TB):

Re: Transfering HDD contents to another HDD

Sorry for the delay in posting back. Christmas is a serious business in our house - the place was awash with relatives, some of whom I can't remember their names :( I used Gparted to partition the HDD. For some reason it has pointed the disk drive to a strange place so I cannot write files to it. GP...

Re: Transfering HDD contents to another HDD

Many thanks for all this, phd21. I will let you know how it goes in a few days. In the meantime, I have to do a bit of internal jiggery-pokery to make room for the new drive. Believe it or not, I have managed to use up all six SATA connections so something will have to make way. ...and I have to put...

Re: Transfering HDD contents to another HDD

FYI: One of the fastest methods of copying a drive's partition is to use "GParted" partition manager editor and literally copy the source drive partition and paste it onto the destination drive partition. You can use "GParted Live" on a bootable CD/DVD disc or USB stick. "Clonezilla Live" disc imag...

Transfering HDD contents to another HDD

Using Mint 18.3 in a desktop.

I am running out of space on my 2TB HDD. I wish to copy the contents of the drive to a new 4TB HDD.

Should I just copy and paste, or is there a better way of doing it? Thanks.

Re: Mate 18.3 Freezes During Copying Files

That fix didn't work.

Without knowing anything about the internal workings of PCs, I wonder if the SATA connections between the two drives can get 'overloaded'? There must be a rate limit of some sort. Perhaps this produces the equivalent of a short-circuit, and poor old Mate freezes.
