Re: Installation without grub2

Thanks JOPETA.

My results with os-prober were very peculiar. Rather than hijack this thread I think it better to open a new one.

Re: Installation without grub2

That's it? At the next boot, the grub menu will give a choice between the two distros? Maybe not the next boot, but sure after sudo update-grub from Manjaro. In this case you will need to update-grub from Majaro each time a new kernel is installed in Mint. And would the same apply if I was installa...

Re: Installation without grub2

JOPETA has it right, but you don't need sudo. Just use the terminal and type: ubiquity -b I have used this for 9 distro multiboots without having to resolve which distro controls grub after the fact. OK, thanks. Just to be clear, install Mint 19 from live environment, then run: ubiquity -...

Re: Installation without grub2

As I understand it, when installing mint19, install grub to the mint19 partition; there should be an option somewhere in the install process. Then boot into manjaro, update grub, and install grub. This should list mint19 in the grub menu. Hello freds72, I am fairly new to this but want to do someth...

Another DE or Distro on External HDD

I use Mint Mate 18.3, but would like to experiment a bit with Mint 18.3 KDE and Kubuntu. I plan to install these on an Adata external HDD (USB). I have formatted this as ext4. I guess I will have to create a partition for the Kubuntu. Will I also have to do that for Mint KDE 18.3? Will I have to cha...

Networking different distros [SOLVED]

In general, will there be a problem with file sharing between, Mint Mate18.3 (or 19) on a desktop, and Kubuntu KDE on a laptop?
I already file share between 3 machines all running Mate 18.3.

Thanks!

Re: Install KDE from live environment

All good stuff, phd21, which I will return to when I finally get a laptop which does what it's told. You guessed. After leading me up the garden path all morning, the MBP failed to boot this evening. I had managed to install mbpfan and get it running, but it was all a waste of time. The aforesaid ma...

Re: Install KDE from live environment

That's fascinating! I will look out an old external drive and see if I can replicate your experiment. As is my nature, I thought to give the MBP a last final chance, and bootloaded it this morning. The first GRUB option - nada. The third option - nada. The second option - hey presto! Mint launched! ...

Re: Install KDE from live environment

If you can afford a newer better computer, then go for it. Although, the specifications for your mac book are fairly good with an Intel dual-core i7 CPU (4 processing threads) with 4gb of system memory, so it might be worth investing in a new battery, power supply, and or power cable, perhaps an SS...

Re: Install KDE from live environment

Of course if there are hardware problems , )I'd check the power supply first) no amount of software tweaking is going to fix that. But before you give up I might suggest that you give Kubuntu a try - It's a very good KDE distro. Thanks. The battery is 8 years old and I know it doesn't hold its char...

Re: Install KDE from live environment

Ouch! Many problems now. Before doing anything you suggested, when I booted this morning it took several attempts before KDE loaded. Each failure seemed to be due to power loss either to the whole MBP, or the graphics card. But, eventually Linux loaded and ran normally. I updated the grub bootloader...

Re: Install KDE from live environment

Thanks. I found the installer. Not sure how I missed it before. Only problem now is fan control to prevent overheating. The OSX software has gone so I'm using Macfanctrld. This comes as a daemon which I have installed but there seems no way of controlling it. Does anyone know if there's a config fil...

Install KDE from live environment

I am running KDE (Mint 18.3) from a USB stick in a MacBook Pro. OSX is deleted. KDE in a live environment is running perfectly as far as I can tell, and I like it a lot! Now, I want to install it properly on the MBP, but I'm not sure how to go about this. Unlike Mate, there is no Linux Mint icon on ...

Mint 18.3 in MacBook Pro

I'm not sure if this is the correct forum so apologies if not. I wish to convert the OS in my MacBook Pro to Linux Mint only. The MBP spec is 2.66 GHz i7, 450 GB available SATA, 4GB DDR, running Sierra 10.12.5. I have installed Linux from USB on three PCs in the network already, and wish to bring th...

Nvidia-384 driver and Driver Manager

I have updated to the 384 drivers but these do not show in Driver Manager. I run 18.3/Mate. This shows nvidia-390 and nvidia-396 drivers but I do not know where these came from. I am currently using nouveau for the GTX 1070. Under Nvidia X-server settings I can see the 384 driver and I can modify it...

Re: LAN connection problem

I'm an idiot. When I used the correct user and password, A connected to B. Apologies for wasting your time and energy, altair4. But, network discovery still does not work with A. Both PCs are dual boot (Windows 10) which may have something to do with it. But the network is discoverable from machine ...
