Re: Which Linux distribution works best for these computers?

With 2 gig memory, you can run Mint with Xfce without swapping for most uses. However, both your CPUs are listed on the "Low End CPUs" benchmark chart over at www.cpubenchmark.net/low_end_cpus.html with passmarks of significantly less than 1,000. The T2310 benches at 730, your 530 at 468. So I woul...

Which Linux distribution works best for these computers?

Hi :D I have two old laptops as I want to be useful again. ("Fujitsu-Siemens ESPRIMO Mobile V5535" and "Advent 1315Nordic") The big problem is that both of them have nightmare chipset SiS. :? When I tried to googled a bit, I found that one of the computers(V5535) had been sold with Knoppix4. http://...

Re: What sends noobs running back to Windows?

my first installation of Linux Mint Mate 18.3 was a surprise and flashback to the mid 90's. I really must use the terminal to install things and to modify files in text editors.. When my friend told me how Linux works and to install things, I really thought he was kidding, It took several...

Re: I have a 7z file that I could not decompressed in the last 22 months.

Hi! If I understand this right, 22 months on a SD card.. I'm sorry to say this.. but.. the data may have been corrupted on your SD card.. The data decays over time.. neither SD cards or USB memories are made for long term storage like SSD disks. These types of memories need some power every now and...

Re: High cpu temperature

Hi! Sorry I haven't responded earlier with some feedback... I have been busy with a lot of everyday things.. I reinstalled the computer with Mint Xfce 18.3 and it solved the heat problem. I tried with Mint Xfce 19, but that version lacks a lot of stuff and there was a problem with samba. so I took 1...

Re: Searching for an advanced firewall

I suspect I might have a little too high demands and expectations on Linux... And I'm maybe a little bit spoiled with good tools in windows..   Well start with the simple stuff (so get ufw and gufw set up and running) and move onto the more complex configuration stuff for later. ...

Re: Searching for an advanced firewall

I am pretty sure you can use the excellent "firejail" sandboxing application to block applications and other stuff from accessing the Internet. Good tip! I didn't think of that, but it's indeed a fine idea: https://sites.google.com/site/easylinuxtipsproject/sandbox Note that you currently still nee...

HI "Marie SWE", I just read your post and the good replies to it. Here are my thoughts on this as well. "OpenSnitch" looks promising. Re: Searching for an advanced firewall

Iptables was capable of block/allow per application, but the required option was removed from the recent versions. Just a remark, iptables can do that with the owner module. # find / -name *xt_owner* /lib/modules/4.15.0-29-generic/kernel/net/netfilter/xt_owner.ko ... ... Example: PID=cat /path/to/<...

Re: High cpu temperature

I advise to do a clean installation of Mint 19. This just might solve all of your problems. And if not, it'll be easier to help you. At least for me, because all my machines are running on Mint 19 now.... This is an official Swedish mirror with the right iso: http://ftp.acc.umu.se/mirror/linuxmint....

Re: High cpu temperature

My computer has dual boot windows7 and Linux mint mate 18.3. In windows my cpu temperature is around 36-39 degrees Celsius in idle.. but in Linux it is pendeling between 49 to 53 degrees(cpu load between 1-3%). Iptables was capable of block/allow per application, but the required option was removed from the recent versions. Netactview will show you realtime connected IPs - have a read of Karl's post here to install it. There are no per-Application Firewalls for Linux... although there are plenty that are ...

First try a kernel upgrade: Update Manager - panel: View - Linux kernels Install the latest kernel from the 4.15 series . Then reboot. By the way: colouring your text is not a good idea... It distracts from the content. I can't see any kernel updates :? Update Manager - panel: View - Linux k...
