Re: Searching for an advanced firewall

Well, you can probably achieve anything you want (and more) with the underlying iptables .... After all, Linux is originally a server OS, powering nearly 100 % of the world's servers. However, iptables is command line-only and not easy to operate. So the question is: why do you think that you need ...

Re: High cpu temperature

I use a usb fan, so it can go where the laptop goes. I just then do stuff like open the DVD slot to direct air into the internal case. It's a bonus that in the summer i also get a breeze from the fan :) https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0092X97IW/ref=twister_B07C6TNLCX?th=1 That was one of them, and doe...

A simple real time overview of which programs/files are connected, preferably with the target's IP address and mac address. A bonus if the am...

Re: High cpu temperature

I'll just post and say check the link in my sig once you've gone through other suggestions. I installed Mint on two laptops over the last few years, one (an old but expensive top of the range HP Pavilion HDX with discrete GPU) cooked itself to death, so DO keep monitoring your system. You can insta...

Re: High cpu temperature

First try a kernel upgrade: Update Manager - panel: View - Linux kernels Install the latest kernel from the 4.15 series . Then reboot. By the way: colouring your text is not a good idea... It distracts from the content. I thank you for the tip, I will try it. :) Okay, the color is gone :wink...

Re: Network problems, Linux Mint Mate and various editions of Windows.

The problem is solved. :)
The fault was a crashed samba file and a small code string that allowed me to use the computer's own username and password as a guest access to windows computers.

Re: Network problems, Linux Mint Mate and various editions of Windows.

Samba made a change a few versions ago in response to a security issue with Windows. It cannot access a "passwordless" windows guest share by default. You will always be prompted for credentials: SMB-guest-share.png In a way it now does what Windows itself has always done the only difference is tha...

Re: Network problems, Linux Mint Mate and various editions of Windows.

as most Linux Systems, if not all of them, - will insist on using an password into both itself & into any network system, too. Now i reflected on your sentence.. But if Linux requires username and password both ways, how come i can access files in the Linux computer folders from my Windows XP compu...

Re: Network problems, Linux Mint Mate and various editions of Windows.

Hi Marie, you may become unstuck on this one, as most Linux Systems, if not all of them, - will insist on using an password into both itself & into any network system, too. :o this is part of the higher level of security, that most Linux systems, do have. so, if your network is currently being seen...
