Cool finding - XFCE Panel switch

If, like me, you're one of those people who can't resisting tweaking their panels this could be a useful find. Very much like the layout switcher on Mate, the XFCE Panel Switcher (found in Synaptic) can quickly switch from different default panel layouts and save your current layout via one click. S...

'kill' command has broken my plank

In an attempt to temporarily move plank from the bottom of my screen to the side the whole thing just froze. To get out of this, I opened system monitor, selected plank, and hit 'kill'. Now I can't get plank to start at all - even after rebooting. I've also uninstalled and re-installed with no succe...

Re: Can't install kubuntu-desktop on Mint 19.1 XFCE

After moving from Cinnamon to XFCE I decided I wanted at least one 'showy' Linux OS on one of my computers. I'm now running Kubuntu 18.04 on my Dell Optiplex and my word it is nice. No offence to Cinnamon users but, aesthetically at least, and regardless of amount of tweaking, Kubuntu/KDE really doe...

Re: default stock XFCE DE

Yes, see above. I did the same thing once on Mint XFCE after having played around with Debian XFCE - but then decided I preferred using plank on the bottom rather than a second panel. Getting the bottom panel together can be a bit fiddly but it's definitely doable. Once you know how to create a pane...

Re: Converted from Cinnamon to Mate

Yeah, I jumped ship to Mint XFCE about 3-4 months ago for the same reason. Despite 8 GB RAM and an AMD A8 CPU I was getting a little annoyed by the slow speed of boot-up and opening certain apps. It wasn't even a very old install of 19.1 so there shouldn't have been to much clutter to slow things do...

Re: How to rid lag on Chromium with compositor enabled?

Yes, it is confusing. I presumed you need to turn compositing off in Window Manager Tweaks and then choose whichever compositor you want via Desktop settings. But I've got no idea, tbh. As far as I see it, any OS should just be set up (if possible) simply to eliminate screen tearing - this is probab...

Re: SSD for booting purpose

Agree. Go for a 128 gb minimum. I had Cinnamon on a 64 gb ssd and constantly got nagged by messages that I was running out of space. In fact, I had to keep moving downloads onto an external drive to make space for new music/tv series etc. ;-)

Re: [SOLVED] How to rid lag on Chromium with compositor enabled?

Some tinkering and more research seems to have solved this problem should anyone else encounter the same thing. I don't which of the following is responsible, or whether it's a combination of factors, but it solves the lag problem and, indeed, removed all screen tearing I was experiencing (a nice bo...

If you want to use your keyboard, you have to configure the shortcuts in the Window Manager.
Tile window to the left : Shift+Ctrl+Left
Tile window to the right: Shift+Ctrl+Right
Sweet! That's what I was looking for.

Thank you secureIT.

Snap windows keyboard shortcut

Hi all.

I've found the list of keyboard shortcuts in Settings Editor but I'm looking to snap windows left and right. Can anyone help me out?

Thanks.

Re: SOLVED! No sound via pulseaudio

Hi. I've got the same problem so rather than starting a new post (maybe I should) I wondered if I can jump in here and ask for assistance. Here's what happened: I had unplugged the speaker jack and then plugged it back in after XFCE had booted. Since then, no sound. As per the OP I played with the s...

Re: Easily set drives to mount automatically at boot

This was one of the first majorly frustrating issues I had with a Linux distro when I first switched from Windows. A very useful sticky indeed.

How to rid lag on Chromium with compositor enabled?

I like to have transparent windows when I drag boxes around the screen (purely cosmetic, so not a deal breaker - but then it does prevent screen tearing too) but with this feature enabled I get definite lag on Chromium. As I need to type a lot for work this becomes a bigger issue as the letters appe...

Re: Redshift and geoclue2 [WORKAROUND]

I use Redshift in a manual mode - 3 levels of brightness/shift with a KB shortcut for each one. I like the flexibility to change the setting not only on time of day, but also depending on whether it is sunny or cloudy or raining. If 3 levels are not enough, of course you can set more. Details in th...

Re: Redshift and geoclue2 [WORKAROUND]

Well, it's stopped working again. Either I get the geoclue error notification on start-up or I get no notification but location is set to 0.0.0. For the moment I can manually start it using this command in the terminal: redshift -O 5500 I'll try the other workaround when I find time I suppose but th...
