Re: Computer becomes suddenly slow

No overclocking. I don't know how to do and I don't need power. The CPU Q9550 runs at standard specs, I mainly look for quietness. The only change I made was to replace the CPU heatsink 1.5 year ago (Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro Rev2). Overall, my hardware has nothing special. Last week, I just repl...

Re: Computer becomes suddenly slow

Update: The cause is probably hardware, nothing to do with the OS. More exactly it looks like the disk access becomes suddenly very slow. From bios screen to login screen, it took may be 3 minutes. I think that may be when I changed the CPU fan, I dusted the inside of the computer and may have deran...

Re: Linux friendly MP3 Players ?

Hi gentlemen, Thank you for the tips. So Sony NWZ-345 is compatible with Linux? Wow, surprising. If so then I think this will be enough for me. Anyone knows the Sony NWZ-S544 ? As for Creative, I wonder if they still makes MP3 Player. In anyway, I don't see this brand anymore on the shelves so there...

Linux friendly MP3 Players ?

Hi, I am currently using Philips Ariaz 16GB It is perfectly compatible with Linux (drag & drop) like an USB key. The Sansa Clip+ can also be used as a USB key. I went for the Ariaz b/c it has 16 GB and a nice screen and is slightly more expensive than the SansaClip+ 4 GB. I am far from an audiophile...

Re: virtualbox xp saving files

Have you installed Guest Addition 4.02 using the Devices / Install Guest Additions menu (an not from a G.A that you download separately)? I installed G.A many, many times, on Windows Guests and Linux Guest OS. I had never encountered the error you mentioned. Especially Windows. There might be a warn...

Default Archive Tool can handle 7zip & Rar format?

Hi, Using LM10 x64, I have noticed that the default archive tool can now create and extract 7Zip format. It can also extract RAR archive. It's really cool. Q1. What is the name of this utility in command line version? Q2. Since when this utility can handle 7z and RAR or did LinuxMint add these forma...

Re: Gnome panel item "delete this panel" is disabled

Thanks for the info. That makes sense. Indeed, I have only 1 panel. I still wish there is an option to avoid to delete a panel accidentally.

Re: virtualbox xp saving files

1- To install Virtualbox 4.02 (which I recommend), you must remove 3.xx (sudo apt-get remove virtualbox) 2- Install Virtualbox 4.02, for LinuxMint 10, you must download the deb package for Ubuntu 10.10 (http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads) 3- You don't need to download Guest Addition. It ...

Gnome panel item "delete this panel" is disabled

Hi, Using LM10. I have changed the desktop so it looks like the standard Gnome desktop. Nothing wrong with Mint layout, it's just old habits. I notice that when I right click the properties of the top panel. The "Delete this panel" menu item is disabled. This is really a good idea ... but I don't re...

Re: LMDE compatible PPA ?

I'm not sure what is the relation between Debian life cycle and the PPA method to install software. In the past, I also have a lot of misery to install a VoIP phone named Linphone. I have never been able to compile it from source. There was always something missing or broken. As soon as a gentleman ...

Re: LMDE compatible PPA ?

What is the reason an author releases a code using the PPA method? Is it because PPA is superior or because he/she decides to specialize for Ubuntu only? Actually, I don't really care about PPA. I just want to be able to install without hunting for all the dependencies or building from source. If th...

Re: LMDE compatible PPA ?

Understood, thx for the link. Without the PPA sometime it's get complicate to install things. After I posted the original message. I tried to follow the author suggestion to recompile the Equinox theme engine. I just needed to add libgtk2-dev, but whether I tried by Synaptic package manager or by su...

I would like to install the Equinox theme and Faenza icon theme following the instructions here: How to install Equinox theme in Gnome Basically there are only a few lines to type: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:tiheum/equinox sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install gtk2-engines-eq...

LMDE64, VLC squished horizonally + Black and White

Hi,

Using LMDE 64 in Virtual machine (Virtualbox 4.0, Guest Additions installed). The host is Mint 10 x64.

Within the VM with LMDE an XVid movie is played OK by Totem. VLC squishes the video horizontally and all colors are lost (see screenshot attached).

Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: Linux Mint Debian (201012) released!

I installed LMDE 32bit on VirtualBox VM running on an aging iMac (I'm getting closer to just wiping the iMac and installing LM), and it works great directly from the .iso, however, when I try to install it, I eventually get a menu which scans for partitions (there 20 GiB available in VM). The menu ...

Re: Will LinuxMint integrate Ubuntu Fonts

Sorry for not followup. I changed the fonts to Ubuntu (in Prerefence / Appearance). However, this seems not affect the Gnome menu and the text in the top panel. The font still looks small (I use standard Gnome menu). What should I do change the font & size in Gnome menu?

Thanks

Re: Migrate to LMDE from Ubuntu / LinuxMint

Just install LMDE, and as long as you choose to mount your current /home partition as /home, and don't check the Format box, it will all work ok. I retained the same settings I had under Ubuntu, including top and bottom panel, theme, and pretty much everything. The look and feel were slightly diffe...
