Re: Old laptop

I have an old Dell 1505 with a Intel T2050 cpu which benchmarks lower than the OP's. It has the original hard drive installed and is running 32 bit Linux Mint Xfce. It boots in 1 minute 30 seconds. Seems unlikely to me that the difference between Xfce and Cinnamon would cause a difference of more th...

Re: Install USB wifi dongle

This is the Panda that I am using. https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JDVRCI0/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Very versatile gadget for the money. I've used it in Mint and MX and others and on many different machines. Also you can put it on the end of a 9' USB extension and posit...

Re: rtl8821ce wifi connection

On problems like this I believe in using the sledge hammer approach. I have used the following WiFi dongle on a number of Mint installs and it always works:

Panda Wireless PAU06 300Mbps N USB Adapter

No driver problems and the most I have ever had to do was reboot.

Re: Help (grub rescue at bootup)

I'm not a guru when it comes to this but I had a Grub boot problem today and I fixed it with something called Boot Repair Disk. You can do a search for where the program can be downloaded.

I am sure the real experts will be along shortly.

Re: Your fallback option in case Mint ever disappeared

I certainly hope Mint lives on in all of its flavors. And I don't think Debian is going any place. I've been evaluating MX Linux and I am impressed by it. I think it is useful in some situations that Mint can't handle. So for now MX Linux is my fall back distro.

Re: Best Linux OS for older devices

What we call distros for old pc's are almost like using text-based DOS with ugly-looking GUI. You've not actually used many of them, have you? Here's screenshots from MX Linux, Peppermint OS and AntiX: Moem's suggestions are good ones. I've played with the three of them and they are all good. In my...

Re: [Solved] MATE or Cinnamon for "legacy" laptop

I've run Cinnamon on machines that have quite a bit less processing power than yours. People make too much of the desktop. I think it is mostly a matter of preference unless you get to very underpowered machines.

Re: Best Linux OS for older devices

Pentium III That's hopeless. Forget it. No modern operating system will run on that. At least not one that's fit for ordinary day-to-day use (web surfing, e-mail). It's not only the system requirements of the operating system that you have to consider, but also the applications. Notably a modern se...

Re: Unable to enter BIOS

Yes, I've done a complete shutdown, unplugged the power supply for 30 seconds, and disabled fast boot. Just google this, "unable to "enter bios" linux mint" and look at the results. This is not a rare occurrence. But it does seem to only present on dual boot systems. I've encountered that problem o...

Re: Unable to enter BIOS

I was unable to enter BIOS(non UEFI system) after installing either Mint 19.1 or 18.3. After some troubleshooting, I discovered that if I attempted to enter BIOS after a restart from Mint, that it would just go directly to GRUB. If I did a restart from Windows 7, I was able to enter BIOS. Just an i...

Re: What type of computer or device do you primarily use?

I've also learned that computers stay much cleaner when they are not on the floor especially if you have pets that shed. The trick to keeping dust and hair out of your machines is to have a positive air pressure inside the case. Simply having more fans sucking air in than fans sucking out is enough...

Your experience with cheap SSDs

I am interesting in hearing about experience with inexpensive solid state drives. I currently have 6 SSDs. I have owned two Crucial MX500 drives the longest but these are not in the category that I am interested in. My other four drives are the inexpensive variety. They are 3 Crucial BX500, 120GB an...

Re: Looking for guidance replacing MS Vista 64-bit with the newest Mint Cinnamon

Right, but the thing is, GRUB is able to see and boot OSses that live on different physical disks. There is no need to make the choice from BIOS. Giving you that choice is GRUB's job. Moem is correct. I had a dual boot system that relied on Grub to supply a boot menu and if I didn't intercede it bo...

Re: Looking for guidance replacing MS Vista 64-bit with the newest Mint Cinnamon

Interested to hear from others who dual boot Mint and Windows 7. What if anything did you have to do to get the two OS's to play nicely together? Do you get a choice of OS (via BIOS) on bootup? I chose 'Install Alongside Windows 7' in the installer's options. That was all. This may be easier than y...

Re: What type of computer or device do you primarily use?

My main machine is a custom built tower. It started with 4GB RAM and an i5 processor and dual monitors. It also had two WD Black hard drives. It was a Windows 8.1 machine for about a year until that started to drive me crazy and I went to dual boot with Mint Cinnamon 17.1 which was later upgraded to...

Re: Looking for guidance replacing MS Vista 64-bit with the newest Mint Cinnamon

I've had three machines set up as dual boot machines. The first one was a dual boot Mint Cinnamon 17.3 and Windows 8.1. That worked OK but when it came time to upgrade to Windows 10, I was never able to do it. The second machine was an old HP laptop. That machine was a dual boot Mint Cinnamon 17.1 ...

Re: Looking for guidance replacing MS Vista 64-bit with the newest Mint Cinnamon

Thanks for your input. We have dual booted Windows Vista and 7 for years with no consequence. Of course, we haven't used Vista for years, but in preparation for removing that OS in favor of Mint, I've been transferring the remaining needed files out of Vista and it still works as expected. I will b...

Re: Looking for guidance replacing MS Vista 64-bit with the newest Mint Cinnamon

I am late to this thread but I wanted to throw this in. I don't particularly like dual booting Linux and Windows but I do have one machine set up that way. One rule that I follow is to create an image of the current set-up before you start the dual boot install. Going back if you ever have to is not...
