Re: Question about multiple monitors vs one larger display size monitor

I've used two monitors for many years. From time to time I've considered one larger monitor but decided against it. What you do and the way you work will enter into the decision. The way I work is to sit directly in front of the left monitor and keep the right monitor at a slight angle. I consider t...

Re: Am I able to encrypt an external hard drive without having to move or delete all of the files from the hard drive?

I would guess that anything worth encrypting is already backed up to another drive anyway. If not just get a flash drive and copy the files there. I would compress the files into an archive and copy the archive to the flash drive. Really just a few minutes work. Encrypting the whole drive or a subst...

Re: Lenovo T512 core i3 good enough?

I have quite a few machines and Cinnamon runs on all of them except for a 12 year old 32 bit Dell that runs Xfce. That machine has 2GB of ram and that is enough for that set up. All the other machines ranging from Dual Core to i3 and i5 have 4 or 8GB of memory. In my opinion Cinnamon needs 4GB of me...

Re: cinammon and xfce together

In my experience Xfce installed on its own partition works more efficiently than when installed as a desktop choice on a Cinnamon installation.

Re: Wifi driver Linux Mint

I don't know about your specific HP laptop but I have an old HP and I remember installing a Broadcom driver. I just started up the machine with a Mint 19 live disk and I had no WiFi. I went into the menu and started up driver manager and the system knew that I didn't have the driver and what driver ...

Re: Mint is my secondary distro

I've been using Mint for 3.5 years. I am comfortable around computers but not an operating system wiz. I think the most important thing is to be comfortable with the OS that you are using and that the one you know the best, is the best. I've looked at other distros and I've thought that some were go...

Re: Icon: Red circle with line through next to drive name

Update. I booted up using a Mint 19 live install disk and plugged in the drive. No strange icons. I also ran chkdsk on a Windows machine for the second time and saw no problems. I am thinking that this is some weirdness in Mint 18.3.

Thanks to all who replied.

Re: Icon: Red circle with line through next to drive name

The drive is about 4 years old and used for backups. I had started to think about replacing it even though I wasn't having any problems with it. I have other machines running Mint 18.3 and plugged it into one of those with the same results. I tried a WD Passport drive and it didn't get that symbol w...

I have a screen print of it. Do I need an online hosting service to add it to the post?

Icon: Red circle with line through next to drive name

Icon appears where the drive is listed under "Devices". I guess it can't be good, but what does it mean? The drive in question is a Western Digital Elements. I have checked it in Gparted and also plugged it into a Windows machine and run chkdsk. No real problems found. Drive appears to work normally...

Re: Cinnamon VS Mate VS KDE VS XFCE. A list of comments I found around.

I have a bias toward Cinnamon because I have run it on my main machine doing 99% of what I do for the past 3 years. But I have experimented with XFCE on an older less powerful machine. I found it to be acceptable but not as good an experience as Cinnamon. I pulled 18.3 XFCE off that machine and put ...
