Re: Looking for guidance replacing MS Vista 64-bit with the newest Mint Cinnamon

I am late to this thread but I wanted to throw this in. I don't particularly like dual booting Linux and Windows but I do have one machine set up that way. One rule that I follow is to create an image of the current set-up before you start the dual boot install. Going back if you ever have to is not...

Re: What Book can I get to learn the basics of linux/mint?

Reading is fine, but in my opinion the fastest way to learn practical operation of a Linux desktop is to just do it. At the beginning you will struggle and curse but the internet search engine is your friend. One struggle at a time you learn what you need to learn to have your desktop do what you wa...

Re: Best Mint Edition for older laptops..?

I have a Dell e1505, a similar model to yours, that I am pretty sure came with 32 bit XP. When I got it the 1GB of memory was bad so I bought 2GB of used memory on eBay. I installed Mint Xfce 32 bit and I am very happy with the performance. I've had around 15 tabs open in a browser as well as other ...

Re: Why did you decide to install Linux Mint??

I had run Windows 8.1 on a new machine for about a year. I got to the point where I couldn't stand the annoyances of the operating system. When turning on the machine there was the inevitable wait with the balls going round and round. When the desktop finally appeared the hard drive would continue t...

Re: The most frustrating think about Mint

>>I'm not a real newbie (about 10 months now on Mint)<< I switched from Windows to Linux over 3.5 years ago. I still consider myself a newbie. When I decided to leave Windows I realized there was going to be a learning curve and it was going to be frustrating. That is the way it is with anything new...

Re: Mint on a laptop?

If I wanted to buy a laptop today I would prefer to get one with an SSD. I would buy one with a HDD only if it was cheap enough to make it worthwhile to swap the drive out and put in an SSD. eMMC is usually for cheaper laptops and you lose a lot of flexibility and performance. Pay a little more and ...

Re: Grub Boot Loader

Even if the drive wears out in a year it still may be a viable method of running an operating system. The drive is easily moved from machine to machine and that is a big advantage and enough to make the expense of replacing it in a year worthwhile. But an SSD can be used in a similar way with a much...

Re: Grub Boot Loader

I've been running Linux Mint off of a 64GB Sandisk USB3 drive for a long time and many hours. I have not run into any problems yet but this is just an experiment. I suspect that these USB flash drives might be using better technology than in the past. One thing you can do is buy something like a Cru...

Re: Question about multiple monitors vs one larger display size monitor

I've used two monitors for many years. From time to time I've considered one larger monitor but decided against it. What you do and the way you work will enter into the decision. The way I work is to sit directly in front of the left monitor and keep the right monitor at a slight angle. I consider t...

Re: Am I able to encrypt an external hard drive without having to move or delete all of the files from the hard drive?

I would guess that anything worth encrypting is already backed up to another drive anyway. If not just get a flash drive and copy the files there. I would compress the files into an archive and copy the archive to the flash drive. Really just a few minutes work. Encrypting the whole drive or a subst...

Re: Lenovo T512 core i3 good enough?

I have quite a few machines and Cinnamon runs on all of them except for a 12 year old 32 bit Dell that runs Xfce. That machine has 2GB of ram and that is enough for that set up. All the other machines ranging from Dual Core to i3 and i5 have 4 or 8GB of memory. In my opinion Cinnamon needs 4GB of me...

In my experience Xfce installed on its own partition works more efficiently than when installed as a desktop choice on a Cinnamon installation.

Re: Mint is my secondary distro

I've been using Mint for 3.5 years. I am comfortable around computers but not an operating system wiz. I think the most important thing is to be comfortable with the OS that you are using and that the one you know the best, is the best. I've looked at other distros and I've thought that some were go...
