Re: How do I automatically mount a LUKS partition using its UUID?

Thanks! I have a pretty good handle on how to do it now. I'll tackle it tomorrow after a night's sleep and some coffee.

[SOLVED] How do I automatically mount a LUKS partition using its UUID?

I need to set up Mint so a non-system LUKS-encrypted drive's partition is automatically mounted when the OS starts. I take it that if it were an unencrypted ext4 partition I would just add an entry to fstab, something like UUID=(the partition's UUID) /mnt/mountpoint ext4 defaults, nofail 0 0 but how ...

Re: Create and manage user accounts and services/daemons in Mint 18.3?

You know something, the level of peer support in the Mint forums is truly amazing! Why, after fruitlessly searching around for an answer to a question or problem, I post a question here then I almost immediately find the answer myself, and you guys didn't even have to do anything! It's magic! :D gno...

Re: SOLVED: System disk almost full within just 2 days?

Much better! I still have 354GB free on the root partition (which contains /home), and restoring my backed-up data only took 5 hours instead of 10. Rather than restoring from Timestamp, I decided just to reinstall and reconfigure all of my apps and things, just to be on the safe side. I don't fancy ...

Re: Gsmartcontrol not able to enable SMART on external drive

My external drive accepts your apology, catweasel. :D BTW my drive is on the list of supported devices on the smartmontools support wiki: https://www.smartmontools.org/wiki/Supported_USB-Devices Mine's the Seagate Backup Plus 4TB model. In any event, it's working with the newer smartmontools app ins...

Re: Create and manage user accounts and services/daemons in Mint 18.3?

I found System Settings/Personalization/Account Details/User Manager which lets me change my name and/or password and create new users. I want to be able to see what groups my account belongs to and what groups are available. I'm trying to create a Veracrypt-encrypted volume using Zulucrypt from the...

[SOLVED] Create and manage user accounts and services/daemons in Mint 18.3?

Is there a utility package or control panel that lets me manage users accounts, start and stop daemons, view logs, and that sort of thing, like a central system administrator's tool?

Re: System disk almost full within just 2 days?

Never mind, I found my own answers. 1. Yes, I have to reinstall, this time choosing only the full-disk encryption option (create LVM and encrypt it) and NOT also encrypt home. (Newbies: choose one or the other, not both. Better still, if you need an encrypted home partition just do a custom installa...

Re: Gsmartcontrol not able to enable SMART on external drive

Which brings up a Mint-newbie question: do Mint devs or volunteers maintain the packages in its repository or do they depend on Ubuntu to do that? Note that I came to Mint after years of using PCLinuxOS, whose lead developer, Texstar, originally forked it from Mandriva so he could be more hands-on a...

SOLVED: System disk almost full within just 2 days?

I'd been messing around with another distro on Friday, trying (and failing) to get full-disk encryption working on it, then gave up and reinstalled Mint KDE again. I installed telling Mint to use the entire desk, selecting LVM and checking the checkbox to encrypt it, which AFAIK is how you set up fu...

Gsmartcontrol not able to enable SMART on external drive

The gsmartcontrol/smartmontools packages detect my external Seagate Backup Plus 4TB drive as "BUP" but can't enable SMART for it. It detects my two internal drives with SMART enabled on them. I tried updating /var/lib/smartmontools/drivedb/drivedb.h with the latest one from the smartmontools.org web...

Re: Old to *nix, new to Mint

I'd like to visit Oz someday, but it's a big country and I wouldn't know where to begin. Probably Darwin as the climate there is most like the Philippines and I'm already used to tropical heat and humidity. The only problem is that I've met a few Australians, and when talking to them in person I cou...

Re: How about IceCat?

(Necroposting.) I second this. I use Firefox as my main browser, Palemoon to run extensions/add-ons that no longer work in Firefox, and Icecat that's been configured to only access certain web apps and not the Internet at large I'd like to see both Palemoon and Icecat in the repository so I don't ha...

Re: /etc/fstab + Mounting Drive = Error

How would I mount a LUKS-encrypted partition? Same way? Mint auto-mounts partitions in /media/jaymot/(uuid of partition) and I want to be able to specify the mount point, i.e. /media/jaymot/backup_drive, to make it humanly-understandable as to which drive is which as I have both an extra internal dr...

Re: Old to *nix, new to Mint

One thing I should warn y'all about: I would like to see Linux become more of a mainstream desktop OS than it already is, something that your grandparents can use without calling you with questions or problems every day, so if I have to open a shell and do things in the cli because there's no other ...

Besides all the wonderful things you mentioned about Mint, the forum is quite good also. There are some really smart people who can help you with just about any problem you might have.

Welcome aboard! I think you'll fit in just fine.

Welcome. I think you'll stay. I've also played with various distros on and off over the years always returning to M$ however, this time, I'm not going anywhere. I've known many people from the Philippines over the years, (I lived in Darwin) but have yet to visit, It is certainly an attractive place...
