New Mint install - great things happening!

About 3 weeks ago, I had installed Mint 19 on my laptop and new desktop. I was mildly disappointed in how sluggish the system seemed. I ended up going back to Mint 18.3. Well, yesterday and today, I did a fresh install of Mint 19 on both machines. Now, all the sluggishness seems to be gone, and the ...

Re: Stellarium will not launch. Segfault issue

Ignore this topic. I forgot that I had posted a similar request long ago. Recently downloaded the appimage file and it worked, although with warnings about the Open GL system. I can live with it.

[ SOLVED] Stellarium will not launch. Segfault issue [IGNORE]

Hello all, I recently did a clean install of Mint 19 on my desktop. It no longer seems to be sluggish - good job developers. So, after restoring my homedir, I installed one of my favorite programs, Stellarium. I can't launch it, and the logfile, /var/log/syslog shows the following: segfault at 7fa25...

Re: Gnome-keyring-daemon

I've usually had this problem when launching a web browser and My login to Cinnamon is automatic (no password). Here's what I did to fix that issue. Don't know if this works for you. Warning - I mostly use command line, so the instructions refer to that. 1. Launch a terminal 2. Type seahorse, press ...

Re: How to solve this printing error: "the cups print spooler does not appear to be running".

Does your HP printer have an IP address? I have an Envy 4520 that I setup with a static IP on my home network, so if I ever have to add it manually, I can install a network printer with the assigned IP.

Re: Facility to downgrade from Mint 19 to 18.3?

I seem to recall that if you open the menu, there is an application named Backup Tool. You can use this to backup your home directory. If you have an external hard drive or a USB stick with enough space, just copy your important files over to that device. I have installed Mint many times, just becau...

Re: Going back to LM 18.3

Did you do an upgrade or clean install? Hopefully the 19.1 release will fix the major problems/annoyances. I always do a clean install. Learned a long time ago to backup important stuff, so I'm never really in a lurch. Looking forward to 19.1, although I've thought about using XFCE. I used XFCE on ...

Going back to LM 18.3

I ran LM 19 cinnamon version for about a week. Didn't have any problems other than it was slow to boot, and a lot of things just seemed to run slower to me. Granted, I didn't time them and do a comparison, but I decided to go back to LM 18.3 today. The install was easy, and I was able to restore my ...

Re: wifi adapter that supports 5Ghz [SOLVED]

It should not be any different in Linux Mint 19 with the same kernel module Yeah, it probably will. I'm running LM19 on my laptop, but haven't bothered to unplug the adapter from my desktop to test. Maybe tomorrow. I did boot from the LM19 iso and it worked on that. I'm presuming the adapter is com...

Re: Adding IP, Net Mask, Gateway

Jeremy, thanks for posting the method to add a static IP address for my wireless adapter. Whenever I tried using the Network icon to do this, the save button was disabled when changing the address type from dhcp to manual. That's why you gotta love command line stuff.

Re: wifi adapter that supports 5Ghz [SOLVED]

they are correct, my laptop's MediaTek is NOT supported period out of the box. I had to buy the Panda PAU06 to get access to the Internet so that I could find the drivers for my laptop's internal WiFi adapter. Linux Mint finds the Panda immediately in the Install mode before you click on install, s...

Re: LM 19 - very slow boot

I'm running Mint 19 on an old Toshiba Satellite 775. I just timed from executing the reboot command to the time the cinnamon desktop appeared. One Minute 17.52 seconds. I never timed Mint 18.3, but the boot time doesn't seem too slow for me. OTOH, I'm 65 and not in a hurry anymore

Re: Wifi driver Linux Mint

Maybe the resident wireless guru JeremyB will add a helpful response. I had problems with a rtl8112au driver that I never did get working. Instead purchased a https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LY35HGO/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 wireless adapter. I contacted Panda support and was ...

Re: World of Warcraft/Battle.net Wine help

I got tired of playing WOW, but at one point codeweavers had released a crossover product that supported WOW. It's been months since I used it, but seem to recall that it worked passably well. Best of luck. Just search for codeweavers Crossover Linux.

Some handy command line aliases

I prefer the command line over any gui to get things done. I have added a few shortcut keys called aliases that I've found pretty handy over the years. Thought I'd share them for users who like the command line, too. Here is the content of a file called .bash_aliases located in my home directory. al...

Re: Extracting and using tar.bz2 file in Mint

I found a solution to this here: https://askubuntu.com/questions/887970/error-while-loading-shared-libraries-librtmp-so-0 However, this is setting up a symbolic link to the library files located in /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/ which looks like 64 bit libraries, although I will confess that I don't rea...

Re: Extracting and using tar.bz2 file in Mint

'Allow executing file as program' will not allow enabling. When I click on the little box the green X flashes for less than a second and is gone leaving the box empty. I downloaded the file, ran it through Archive Manager, and extracted it to my Downloads folder. Then, using the terminal did this l...

Re: How to upgrade to Linux Mint 19

My Toshiba Satellite 775 has very reliable wifi connection to my Linksys Wifi Router. I upgraded from 18.3 to 19 using wireless yesterday with no problems. All is working well, including wireless, sound, and video.

As always, YMMV
