Re: wifi adapter that supports 5Ghz

I installled the software provided, but once again, no luck. When I use the terminal command inxi -Fzz|grep Network , the device doesn't show up, but using lsusb and dmesg|tail, it appears. This is after a reboot and lsmod|grep8812au shows the module. It just doesn't work. I really appreciate the ti...

wifi adapter that supports 5Ghz [SOLVED]

I have purchased a wifi router that supports 5Gz and would like to find a wifi adapter that works in Linux Mint 18.3 out of the box. I had purchased something from Amazon, and followed directions to compile the 8812au module for kernel 4.13.0-45-generic but it just didn't work. The process failed an...

Re: Unable to connect Wifi after sleeping HP computer

Next time try this command in a terminal see if it works. systemctl restart NetworkManager The uppercase letters helped, but Network Manager still doesn't show any wifi availability. Luckily, WICD reconnects the wireless network, blithly ignoring the peeved state of Network Manager which shows the ...

Re: Firefox 60.0.2 released today. When will it fit the update manager?

Hello, tgwilt. On Linux Mint, you should not download the genuine Mozilla Firefox .tar.bz2 archive and install it in order to update your Firefox. On Linux Mint, the Linux Mint update manager should offer available Firefox updates to you for installation. In case the update manager does not offer a...

Firefox 60.0.2 released today. When will it fit the update manager?

Subject says it all. The new version is supposed to be a 'stability and security update' I downloaded the tarball and installed in on my computers, but am wondering how long does it usually take a minor update to hit the update manager in LM?

Re: Grub frustrations

Does anybody else struggle with grub? I have 4 kernels, with the latest being 4.4.0-128. I would like to boot into that kernel by default, but I always have to choose the advanced options on the grub menu. I've looked all over for a nice, easy way to make the 4.4-0 image the default, but it's like ...

Back again with hat in hand: stellarium (SOLVED)

Hi all, I used the Software Manager to install Stellarium version 0.18.0-1. I've used it on many different Linux machines with no problem. When launching the program, the splash screen appears then nothing happens. A look at dmesg|tail reveals the following <stellarium[1789]: segfault at 7f302ac2e26...

Re: How did I get Linux Mint 19 from fresh install?

I am slightly confused, there is no such thing as Windows 20. Did you mean Windows 10? I meant Windows 10. I underwent a traumatic brain injury 4 years ago, and sometimes my fingers and brain disconnect, Sorry for the confusion. It wouldn't matter which version of windows was there, I'm not using it.

How did I get Linux Mint 19 from fresh install? (SOLVED)

Recently bought a used computer in very good shape. It had Windows 20 on it, so naturally, I installed Linux Mint Cinnamon. I have burned the version 18.3 iso file to a DVD and installed. Everything worked well, but inxi -F shows that versin 19 is installed. No upgrades were done other than those su...

Re: HP printer: how to get printing from Firefox happening?

As an old XP Pro expatriate 16 years ago, welcome to linux and mint. I saw nothing of your installing and configuring "CUPS". HPLIP does not do that for you and you must manually install and configure it: from a terminal, sudo apt install cups . You can also do this from Synaptic or from the linuxm...

Re: Mint doesn't boot. Displays errors

Hope this isn't a waste of bandwidth...

The first thing I do after a fresh install is to use Timeshift to backup the system. Some folks have reported issues with Timeshare, but I haven't had any problems with it. Maybe I got lucky, YMMV.

Re: Why do you ask me if I want to run TXT as executalbes???

Try this: Right click on that file and choose "Properties" Then under the "Permissions" tab check to see if the box allowing the file to be executable is ticked. If the text is not a script that box should not be ticked. Good call!! I'd forgotten about shell script and the like. I like using the te...

Re: Why do you ask me if I want to run TXT as executalbes???

While that was a non-issue for me, I fixed it by opening Preferred Applications (it's in the menu) and was able to choose text editor as the preferred application for .txt files. I've found that it is easier and less stressful to look for solutions than to get annoyed with problems. This is true in ...

Re: Will choosing "Erase disc and install Linux Mint" wipe out my windows partition?

Hello! When I get to the installation type it gives you the normal options, install along side, erase disc, something else. Last time I reinstalled I did it along side and I hated it. I don't want to do that, but I also don't want to lose my windows partition just yet. Any help would be appreciated...

Re: where could I find the information of all installed drivers.

The terminal command inxi -Fxz will give all that info. what is the semantic meaning of this command? inxi is the command, -Fxz is the options to pass to the command. Open a terminal and enter man inxi for a complete list and description of the options. Gotta agree with this. The thing is, most new...

Does right clicking on an empty space on the panel show an option to Add to Panel ?
