Re: upgrade to mint 19.3 --> mintupdate not starting xapp dependency ?

This is starting to become really troublesome and frustrating, because everything, which solved the issue for others, seems to fail on your system. :( My solution would have worked if given right away, but he's since been given commands to manually change him over to the LM 19.3 repos, without full...

Re: Download and install linux kernel on offline machine

Do you perhaps have a link to the source that rules them all? No, I am my own source in this case, with knowledge about how Canonical operates. Unless they run into trouble with a specific series, the LTS version will be whatever latest series they've got working and tested by the time th...

you can expect to be offered an upgrade to a newer kernel series that'll be LTS again. Probably the 5.4.x.
5.4 is end of life, so it will be 5.5 with a possibility of even 5.6.

lost the "Sleep" button. How I can reverse the changes and just use the sleep option?
That's curious, but if all you did was follow the guide then this will undo that:

Code: Select all

sudo rm -v /etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/com.ubuntu.enable-hibernate.pkla

Re: Download and install linux kernel on offline machine

The command I gave was for the LTS kernel series (4.15). If you want the HWE kernel series (currently 5.3), the command would be

Code: Select all

apt download linux-generic-hwe-18.04

No, it's all good, much of that is Mint itself modifying those files (Mint's ubuntu-system-adjustments package does that), some of that is bad packaging.

Re: Can't Create Desktop Link in Mate on 19.3

Navigate to /mnt in your file browser and then either Ctrl+Shift+drag or Alt+drag winshare to your desktop to link it (the latter gives you a menu, the former creates the link directly).

You say it's only with specific colours but you didn't specify which ones. I tried with a general purple and it works just fine, so it's hard to comment: https://i.imgur.com/lI4mpSf.png This is with Compiz Reloaded (rather than Ubuntu's Compiz fork) and Emerald compiled from source, frame engine is ...

Re: Timeshift query

By default, cron sends an email to the system administrator with the results of each scheduled process it runs. Since Timeshift uses cron to runs its hourly task, this can get spammy, hence the option to suppress the email for Timeshift's task. I'll note that cron only sends emails if you have got a...

Re: Timeshift query

Snapshots tagged "O" as in "On Demand" are not removed automatically by Timeshift.

Timeshift does indeed run an hourly task if you have got scheduled snapshots configured.

The log files are for the automated task and the actions you do via the GUI.

Re: Mate linuxmint vs Mate Ubuntu

I think you're confusing RAM used for the disk cache with RAM used by applications. Using all your not otherwise used RAM for caching is desirable, it speeds up your system.

I have a Mint MATE 19.2 VM for testing that I only give 600 MB RAM to and that's plenty more than the OS needs.

oh lol, I'll be, my bad, there was indeed a typo, but it was that I forgot the initial ". All good though, you don't need to redo it.

I believe the extension pack is not available from the repository, you need to download it from https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads.

Re: Wine & Update Manager

I would not expect it to become available in the official LM 19.x repos at all, for Linux Mint is a long term support release distro, i.e. outside of bug fixes, software versions generally remain stable for the support duration. If you want it Wine 5, there are installation instructions at winehq.org.

Re: Installing Virtualbox from Terminal Command-line (19.3)

Hmm, I'd say remove everything vbox you've got installed:

Code: Select all

apt purge --autoremove "virtualbox*"
and then reinstall it

Code: Select all

apt install virtualbox-6.1
