Re: How to stop hid_field_extract() noise in the log files

If you know the problem is your kernel, why are you using an end-of-life kernel series and not even the latest version in that series containing the released patch? Makes no sense...

Apply your updates, that's what they are for.

Re: Symlink or bind... this is the problem

In the context of the "guide" referenced in the original post which has as its premise Why create a separate data partition instead of a separate /home partition? and since the signature of the OP states a dual boot between Linux and Windows the data partition is most likely NTFS. Probably not a go...

Re: Symlink or bind... this is the problem

That's a loaded question because it depends on a number of parameters, none of which you shared. For single user system I would use neither, I would simply mount that partition directly to the location where you want to access it from.

As far as I see, I had not installed the low latency version before but now it wants to update it
I cannot reproduce that locally but I'll add it to the list of things to double check in a Mint VM.

Re: do I need compiz?

I'm not very keen on effects but I like the fact that I can switch to a different viewport by moving mouse to the edge. Something Cinnamon is incapable of without an extension. And there's a bunch of other stuff as well, turning MATE into a miniature KDE. :D Yes, I have it configured to do the same...

Re: do I need compiz?

Works like a charm and very rarely crashes. When it does, it's good to have a copy of the working profile which recovers it in no time. MATE wouldn't be the same to me without it. I just have a keybind to compiz --replace to reload it. It's not so much that it crashes but sometimes (rarely) it star...

Re: do I need compiz?

Will I see a difference If I install compiz? Massively so, but it depends on what difference you are looking for? Also I believe the desktop environments that support compiz (Cinnamon does not!) already come with it pre-installed. Compiz is a plague. Instability comes pre-packaged. I find...

Re: Run script after installation is done

Well, I gave you two options which I think are good ones, I'm sure you can figure it out from there. Little hint for the user setup: The defaults are pulled from /etc/skel.

Re: Icons location on disk

If this is about adding a single icon, just drop it into

Code: Select all

/usr/share/pixmaps/
If you want to modify existing icon themes or add your own icon theme, the answer becomes more complex.

Re: how to request package updates?

I just scanned through the thread but I feel nobody pointed out the basics: Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu LTS, i.e. these are long term support releases with software versions deliberately frozen and only receiving security updates and critical bug fixes to provide a stable platform. If you want the...

Re: Update Manager Maintenance Error

I consider this solved from this posting: https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=90&t=310721 I filed a bug report. Sorry, yes, I haven't had a chance to look at a Mint install since to be able to give any further input since. Rather than the mintsources bug I was more concerned about the miss...

Re: Run script after installation is done

Preferably it would be sweet if the whole installation could be automated, for example the computer name get generated by serialnumber and a pre-set admin user. That way I could script in later who is going to have the computer, but I am not there yet....by a lightyear it seems  At my job we a...

Re: mintupdate as stand alone install

I don't know what's wrong with the X11 forwarding. I'd probably have to try such a setup myself to understand. If you don't have dconf installed and don't want to install it, you can also disable desktop notifications in Update Manager's preferences (via remote desktop). bluez is the source package ...

Re: gm10's Linux Mint Tools PPA

I think it is a little confusing as it shows up and is 'checked' to install by default in the regular update manager window not just the kernel manager. It would be nice to have more control as to what shows up there. Not entirely sure what you mean here. If you install a kernel, then Update Manage...

What causes the forcefsck file to still be deleted on the next reboot?

Re: Run script after installation is done

If you want it to run automatically as part of the installation process you'd have to modify the installer, there's no option to pipe in a script otherwise. But you can, of course, just run it manually from a terminal window after the installation is done, you are not required to reboot immediately.

Re: mintupdate as stand alone install

The crash happens because your desktop environment does not appear to have a notification service installed, guess I wasn't handling that situation (will be fixed next release). As a workaround, manually disable notifications like this: dconf write /com/linuxmint/updates/show-desktop-notifications f...

Re: Install "Back In Time"

It's their official PPA, so should be fine. PPAs can be hijacked just like everything else If the PPA maintainer's computer gets compromised or they otherwise lose control of their signing key, or if their github source code repository gets compromised, which the PPA imports from.
