Re: EnvVars available in Cinnamon lock screen message?

:?: I don't have any option to set a message in Login-Window (18.3 and 19 with default slick-greeter / lightDM combo). You're quite right. That's where the Login-Window backdrop image is set - which does display correctly - not the message. My bad... it has been one of those weeks where I can't ope...

EnvVars available in Cinnamon lock screen message? [solved]

LM18.3 Cinnamon x64 In another lifetime (early RedHat days, I think. Maybe Minix, probably not) I could customise the LogIn screen's welcome message using a variety of escape codes & EnvVars. (Just to clarify: I'm talking about a msg displayed statically on the LogIn screen, not the motd or welc...

Re: Can Lock Screen background be other than current desktop BG? [SOLVED]

You are welcome. I've got the second version running on my system now and it works great. With the script running after doing Ctrl-Alt-L the screensaver comes up with the current background and then transitions into the new one within a few seconds. Same in reverse on unlock. It's working fine with...

Re: Can Lock Screen background be other than current desktop BG? [SOLVED]

Woohoo! Thank you kindly, sirrah! With a few minor modifications - selecting the Lock Screen BG depending on time of day - I think your scripts'll be just the ticket. :) I'm uncertain whether the fact that the backdrop is changed after the Lock Screen is triggered - even if only by 0.1s - will displ...

MediaPlayer/VLC won't play .AVI from NAS

LM19 x64 Cinnamon. This is pretty much a fresh install on a lappy purely to stream multimedia from the NAS thru HDMI on a big screen TV. The connection's via Samba, all media files on the NAS can be seen, copied, moved and edited by the Lappy. .MKV & .MPG play well in both VLC and MediaPlayer bu...

Re: Can Lock Screen background be other than current desktop BG?

Considering that I'm new to Mint (cinnamon in particular) and cinnamon-screensaver-command -q is a new cmd to me, I expect that you'll beat me to the punch on this one if you decide to accept this particular challenge. Thank you kindly Sirrah, for pointing me in the right direction. :) Huh. What I t...

Re: Can Lock Screen background be other than current desktop BG?

Ahhh... thank you. On a side note, I've just realised that the reason I was never seeing the file defined for the Login window (ie. as set in slick-greeter.conf) is because by default it uses the background of the currently selected user. Naturally, on my system it defaults to my account. Switching ...

Mine are in /usr/share/themes

I think that somewhere along the line (18.2->18.3?) LM changed from mdm to lightdm.

Can Lock Screen background be other than current desktop BG? [SOLVED]

LM18.3 Cinnamon LightDm As the title says, is it possible to get the Lock Screen background to display other than the current desktop? Ideally I'd like to run a cron script to change the displayed Lock Screen BG depending on time of day, which is simple enough IF I can get the Lock Screen to load fr...

Re: Major Timeshift Storage Problem!

Sounds like storage issues, although I can't comment on the broken apps in the second post. Sounds like filesystem issues there... you should probably do an fsck. But, first things first. If you can boot and open Timeshift, go to Settings/Schedule and reduce the settings in there to minimise the num...

Re: Home NAS media server: Can someone help me understand

I use a Synology NAS for system backups & multimedia sharing on our LAN. There are more 'elegant' solutions but I prefer the NAS as it has low power usage, which I like considering it is online 24/7, along with the router & modem. Everything else in the LAN is only powered as required, cutti...

Re: Log files grow by the second.100gb+

Actually, it'd probably be better if you used the 'e' option in the grub boot menu to add the 'pci=noaer' to the boot config. That would make it only a temporary fix and if the problem persisted for that particular session, then there's no point making it a permanent part of the grub cfg. Do ...

Re: Log files grow by the second.100gb+

FWIW, apparently there is(was) an issue with a combination of some PCIe wifi cards, Skylake chipsets, Intel mobos and the 4.x kernels. What's your HW cfg? Inxi -Fx please. You say you had the same system working under 18.3 before? If it is the same problem, as a workaround to make the system usable ...

Re: Today's mystery: Is authenticity verified if the response does not say "good"?

Basically, no. No, it hasn't been verified. There's enough there to hint that it is good but that's different to an actual verification. Why don't you try again while on-line? I guess it could be argued that what we're calling a successful verification: $ gpg --verify sha256sum.txt.gpg sha256sum.txt...

Re: Mint 19 Cinnamon: SSD for OS and HDD for storage?

From a fresh install it should be fairly straightforward. /swap is basically used to dump the contents of your RAM onto disk like when you put the system into hibernation so you don't 'loose' what you were working on. Not quite. It's also used when a system's RAM is heavily loaded, swapping pages in...

Re: Mint 19 Cinnamon: SSD for OS and HDD for storage?

It's perfectly possible and worthwhile doing. For a single user system I'd install the OS to the SSD for boot speed and mount the 2TiB HDD as /home which is pretty much where a user's media files & 'personal' data are stored. Think of it as a combined Windows 'My Documents' & 'Downloads' fol...

Re: Synaptic doesn't accept root password

You're confusing me. Sudo allows a user to run command(s) as another user; it doesn't have to be root. my use case is running apps as root. On a single-user system, well.. it's a matter of convenience. But... In a multi-user situation, why on earth would you give a "default" user privilege...

Re: Grub's "xxx (upstart)" option

Thanks fellas, that's pretty much what I thought. Seeing as how earlier versions of Mint ran upstart by default, I guess this was kept around for backwards compatibility as I know upstart is available on LM18.3... if you want to go to the effort of changing over from systemd. So it's gone altogether...

Grub's "xxx (upstart)" option [Solved]

LM18.3 Cinnamon Among the options in my Grub boot screen are basic boot, recovery mode and upstart mode. Upstart mode? From what I can gather, this will boot Mint using the upstart init system instead of systemd. I'm under the impression that this is an either/or thing... so with a vanilla installat...
