Re: Update Mgr: ndiswrapper blacklisted

OK, it's been a few days with no replies so I took it out of the blacklist and update mgr immediately found an update. AFAICT it hasn't affected the relevant HW operation, so I'll consider the blacklisting as "I screwed up somehow." A mis-click at stupid o'clock in the morning perhaps. [sh...

Update Mgr: ndiswrapper blacklisted

As the title says, while checking update manager's settings I found ndiswrapper in the blacklist. Now, AFAIK I don't need or use it and I certainly didn't manually blacklist it. I'm assuming that this is the result of some upgrade... but I don't know; I may have done something stupid, although every...

Re: Is there SW for reading a HDDs max LBA, # of tracks, etc?

To answer your question: sudo fdisk -l -u=cylinders How old is that thing that you need to use LBAs? Thank you, that's what I needed. It's not how old the HW is... it's how old my non-Win knowledge is. I'm working from 20yo memories of BSD & Minix, bolstered by a lot of googling. Also wh...

Is there SW for reading a HDDs max LBA, # of tracks, etc? [Solved]

I have a small(ish) HDD for which I need to map out bad blocks... using SmartCtl to check it's attributes it looks like it's already mapped out what it can so I'm simply going to place partitions up to - and maybe after - the bad sectors. I believe that I've mapped the bad area (on paper) in terms o...

Timeshift: cannot select RAID (/md0) for snapshots.

LM18.3x64 Cinnamon I have a working mdadm RAID10 array (/dev/md0, ext4 fs) containing several disks, mounted @ /mnt/data. My system disk is partitioned with / /home & /spare. (Had meant to leave /spare unformatted 'til I was happy with the sizes of / & /home but... [shrug]) /spare is tempora...

Glad you got there. I know how you feel about systemd...

Looking back you didn't actually say you were trying to connect to server hw so I was assuming you were connecting to a desktop PC. [shrug] Could've been frustrating for both of us.

Re: Want to enable DEC VT320 to login on ttys0

/dev/ttyS0 equates to the old COM1: As few modern computers actually have an RS-232 port nowadays, I'm curious what you're using. An RS-232->USB adapter? (Somehow I doubt you're using the MMJs... ) What, if any, signs of connectivity do you have? if you type "echo test > /dev/ttyS0" ...

Re: Audio output reverts from HDMI to system speakers after reboot or monitor turned off

Try this... (works in LM18.3x64 anyway. Don't know if it'll fix your problem, but it's the cinnamon equivalent to OP's suggestion.) In a terminal execute sudo apt-get install dconf-tools Then run dconf-editor - In the left panel : select 'org > cinnamon > cinnamon-session' - Check 'auto-save-session...

Re: LM19 WiFi not showing in network settings

I know this isn't a 'fix' for your problem, but apart from a mention of going to LM17 or 18 you haven't actually mentioned whether you have previously run those versions on this machine and, if so, whether the problem was there as well? If you've only tried LM19, then I'd definitely install a known ...

Re: Automatically execute daemon at startup

You could start a job via cron shortly after system boot (ala Timeshift.boot) but I think this'd be better suited to be called thru the Upstart event system.

Re: Compiled with Make Question

You just want an icon in the menu? If not, (you want SW Mgr to list it as installed?) ignore the following waffle. :) You can add the cmd for your program directly to the menu, but I prefer to call the cmd via a script for flexibility. As an example, here's how I added "Dwarf Fortress" to ...

Can I move /boot to a new HDD this easily?

My current HDD is 3TB with 2TB unpartitioned, as I wanted to see how LM would fit on a 1TB HDD and the 3TB was all I had to hand at the time. The time has come to replace it with a real 1TB HDD so I can use the 3TB elsewhere. In the tutorial sub-forum, there's the thread Moving the root partition to...

Re: Listing of OS keyboard shortcuts?

Ah, thanks. I wonder why the shortcuts to virtual consoles isn't included in most listings - well... none that I found - considering how useful they are? I remembered accessing them via Alt-F[1-6] which is why I was pleased to discover the Ctrl-Alt-F[1-6] combination. For anyone interested, Ctrl-Alt...

Listing of OS keyboard shortcuts?

LM 18.3 Cinnamon x64 Can anyone point me in the direction of a comprehensive listing of k/b shortcuts? I've found plenty of lists of basic shortcuts for Gnome/KDE, etc. but nothing I've found so far covers items such as Ctrl-Alt-F1 = VConsole, etc. As a matter of fact, I only found out about the abo...

Re: 2x RAIDs or 1x RAID partitioned?

The RAID is(are) for local access, I have full/incremental backups in place via NAS. 5EE, huh? I hadn't heard of that before now. Nice idea to have hot spares built in, but methinks I'll still go the RAID10 route... better to stick with what I know, for now. Perhaps the next PC rebuild will acquire ...

Re: LM19 WiFi not showing in network settings

At a glance it looks like there may be some loose code in the source. Without actually DLing the source myself, I can't comment.

You could possibly edit dkms.conf and enable debugging in the make line, but that's heading into esoteric territories where there be dragons.

Sorry.

Re: LM19 WiFi not showing in network settings

Out of curiosity I looked up the driver kc1di recommended and found: This is a fork of the Realtek 802.11ac (rtl8812au) v4.2.2 (7502.20130507) driver altered to build on Linux kernel version >= 3.10. Which does correspond to the chipset reported by your wifi card. (Doesn't mean it's right , though.....

2x RAIDs or 1x RAID partitioned?

LM 18.3 Cinnamon x64 Besides my system HDD, I have 7x 2TB HDDs that were part of a Win BIOS RAID5 which became unrecoverable when Win died. Data was backed up. Under Linux they'll be remounted under mdadm as 3 basic partitions. I was advised (non-forum tech) to mount as 1x RAID5 (3xHDDs) for 2 parti...
