Re: Automate MDADM checking?

Now that you've added your email address to /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf I suggest you see if /etc/cron.daily/mdadm exists. That's part of the monitoring daemon and should already be installed/running. (I'm unsure whether it was created as part of setting up the initial mdadm array or just plain old defaul...

Re: Alarm clock recommendations?

alarm-clock-applet fits the bill nicely. Thank you! (In all honesty, that's the one I had in mind when I first asked. However when I looked it up in the 'applets' DL Mgr it wasn't listed and I assumed that it wasn't supported under LM18. So I didn't bother checking synaptic. As the saying...

Alarm clock recommendations? [Solved]

LM18.3 Cinnamon x64 I'm looking for a simple alarm clock... preferably one that can accept multiple times for the alarm. I don't particularly want a permanent desktop icon/window or panel indicator - only when it is actually running. Nor do I wish something that has fancy bells 'n whistles... it's n...

Re: Mint cannot "see" FakeRaid drive on AMD Ryzen system

Huh. Did you try checking whether mdadm can locate the array? (mdadm is preferred to dmraid, but may not detect Promise RAID adapters, which AMD's fake RAID is based on . Still... worth a try.) sudo mdadm --assemble --scan Also, some quirky fake RAIDs fail to be detected when dmraid -l checks for me...

Re: how to run a command when reboot & shutdown

Ideally you'd write a script that'll both start & shutdown the process, and place that in /etc/init.d , with a symlink to it in /etc/rcS.d to start the process and more symlinks to it in the /etc/rc[0-6].d folders to terminate the process at shutdown. This involves some... complexity. (An irrelevant...

Re: How to run mintupdate-tool automatically on startup?

Also, does anyone know what was wrong with my original method of simply adding my command to startup applications? FWIW, I believe that Startup Applications will simply quietly refuse to run any user-added programs that need elevated privileges. I think items added via the GUI are stored in the use...

Adding Win7 to existing LM Install?

LM18.3 Cinnamon x64 Legacy BIOS (Does have UEFI but is disabled for compat. reasons) Unfortunately, despite my resistance to the idea, I need to add Wind'ohs to my system; probably Win7 as it'll run what I require without the extra headaches that were added in later versions. I just want to make sur...

But ~700kB/s vs ~150kB/s can make for a big difference when there's a lot of files to dl.

Update Mgr & 'fallback' repositories.

A few times now, Update Mgr has been in the midst of downloading updates when it pulls up short with a failed fetch; the repository I favour (purely for locality and access speed) has either gone offline for one reason or another or has 'locked' the desired files. Naturally, I select another repo an...

Re: Edit cursor question...

I don't want to change the cursor's appearance, I'd liket to make it more visible. Ideally, I'd like it to blink at a rate I can set to my liking.

Perceived movement attracts the eye far better than any particular shape... ;)

Re: Craziest Tech Support Problems or Descriptions You've Heard

In another life, in the days of top-loading hard-drives, I was called in to emergency trouble-shoot a DEC VAX/VMS system that refused to boot after extended down-time over school holidays. It didn't take long to establish that somehow a rat not only managed to get into their "clean-room," but had al...

Re: Raid 5 lost

One thing that might be worth trying, unlikely though it seems... check the raw device(s) for the superblock, not the partition(s). ie. mdadm --examine /dev/sdb instead of mdadm --examine /dev/sdb1 If this shows a superblock, you at least know how it was running before reboot. I know this can...

Re: Re-Installation Nightmare

Hehe. I misunderstood you, now you're both misunderstanding each other. I think. I believe that what BG405 means is that as you said that just the once 1TB HDD did re-appear in the BIOS, seemingly at random, so keep rebooting until it appears in the BIOS again - if it ever does - and then proceed to...

Re: How to run mintupdate-tool automatically on startup?

Is Update Manager supposed to default to installing updates automatically? Because it does start automatically when the computer powers on. I want to set it to install safer updates automatically for a user who doesn't know which updates to install. You're right... In LM18.3 Cinnamon it doesn't aut...

Re: How to run mintupdate-tool automatically on startup?

I thought that Update Manager defaulted to auto-check on boot? It does on LM18.3 Cinnamon, anyway. I'll have to look at my 18.3 MATE system later to see what it does. (Don't have ready access right now.) If it doesn't, you should be able to edit the root crontab (not the user's) to add something lik...

Re: Re-Installation Nightmare

You say that your tower PC can see the problem HDD? Then I'd suggest that you back up everything you want from the Win partition, with the intent of totally wiping the 'faulty' HDD clean and starting again. I'd also boot the Tower from LiveUSB with the HDD still installed, run GParted (from the Live...

Whilst that repo supports 18.x and 19 isn't it only for Nvidia cards? For AMD looking at lazarus' first link he needs to update mesa. There are a couple of AMD down at the bottom. On trying to install I was given a couple of Warns, but no failures. Checking with LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose glxinfo still re...

LM18.3: possible to update MESA/OPENGL drivers? [SOLVED]

LM18.3 Cinnamon 3.6.7 x64 Kernel: 4.15.0-33-generic x86_64 I've an old AMD R7/R9 hybrid gfx card that has been working acceptably for most things and a few modern commercial games. With the advent of the new STEAM Proton beta, the range of games available has expanded greatly but many require MESA 1...
