Re: No wired LAN with LiveUSB? [solved]

Well, I'll be...

It appears that 'Execute Disable Bit' was the main culprit. I say 'main' as I've rebooted the LiveUSB six times and five of those times the LAN worked. Once it failed as per before.

Still, it's a good first step. :) Good enough to mark this topic as solved.

Re: No wired LAN with LiveUSB?

AFAICT, there is no option for 'secure boot.' There is a Fast Boot, but I believe that's akin to the old Legacy Fast Boot. There's an 'Execute Disable Bit' which 'may enhance protection for this computer.' There's also 'Intel Virtualisation Technology' which I wouldn't expect to affect the NW card, ...

No wired LAN with LiveUSB? [solved]

I've been trying to install LM18.3 Cinnamon x64 on a Gigabyte GA-B85M-HD3-A mobo. The PC in question is running W7 quite happily, with full LAN connectivity. Booting from LiveUSB there is no access to the wired LAN and network manager shows "Wired: cable unplugged" although everything else works wel...

Re: kernel 4.15.0-33-generic based on which ubuntu ???

It would be more helpful than anything above if you were to name the application. Sorry... it's midnight Friday here now and family took priority. I'm looking at graphics drivers for my Radeon card, at what was claimed to be 3rd party drivers but on closer inspection was simply a badly rebundled AM...

kernel 4.15.0-33-generic based on which ubuntu? [SOLVED}

LM18.3 Cinnamon x64 kernel 4.15.0-33-generic As the title asks: what is the ubuntu version equivalent of kernel 4.15.0-33-generic? I'm trying to install an app on LM18.3; the site I'm looking at has compiled bundles for Ubuntu 17.04 & 18.04 but not 16.04 (What's with all these x.04s?) so I'm wonderi...

Re: SW to reset WD HDD SMART tables?

I'm sooo glad I don't have seagate drives if one needs a UART<->TTL adapter (RS-232:USB) to do this. That's ridiculous. The first link is correct in that SMART is definitely a non-standard industry standard! The SW in the second link is the demo version of the WD HDD Repair Tool I was looking at. Ni...

Re: Maya & Lightwave - suggest Linux native alternatives?

@Catweasel: thanks for the links! I've bookmarked the site for obvious reasons.

@JosephM: Houdini? I just checked their website and under the Linux distributions there's a Mint 13+ (64bit) Woohoo! I'll see how the demo version goes, but I'm already liking what I see on their webpage.

SW to reset WD HDD SMART tables?

My RAID array is built from several WD-EARS, EACS & EADS HDDs, I also have a couple extras which I'd removed from a previous incarnation of the array due to SMART warnings. The HDDs check out & were working fine, 'twas just that the Load Cycle count was spiralling away on them and, at the time, I di...

Re: Whats everyone currently listening to?

Heh. Now Bach's Toccata & Fugue in D Minor is blasting from the speakers.

Awesome music, but not exactly fitting the mood of the rest of the playlist. Time to check my directories for misfiled songs, I guess. :?

Re: Whats everyone currently listening to?

Currently listening to a random playlist from my local files; a mix of Moody Blues, Deep Purple, Suzi Quatro, The Doors and Early Black Sabbath. And... somehow a song from The Runaways crept into the list. Hmmm... I'm still listening to the incessant ring of tinnitus. yeah. Mine's compounded b...

Maya & Lightwave - suggest Linux native alternatives?

I'm looking for alternatives to Maya and Lightwave that will run natively under Linux. I've licensed versions for Win but without graphic acceleration they have performance issues when run in a VM. Less than 50% throughput on my last round of tests, as compared to running natively under Win7 on exac...

A tale of woe and misery.

While I still believe that my method is viable, I decided to try booting from LiveUSB & installing to a 2nd 64GB USB instead, just to be sure of HW compatibility. If that went well, then I'd look again at trying a Frank Sinatra and "Do It My Way." The image was written to the USB nicely and I fired ...

Re: Win Raid5 in Mint19

OK. That's odd, but still... instead of trying to walk you through getting it to work that way, let's try another simple approach. In a terminal type: sudo nano /etc/cron.d/ldmtool-boot and copy/pasta the following in: SHELL=/bin/bash PATH=/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin...

Re: Where to define default groups for new Non-Root "Desktop" users?

In LM Cinnamon, there's a Menu->Administration->Users & Groups GUI. adduser and/or useradd give you much more control if you're creating a 'custom' user account, but the GUI is fine for basic housekeeping. AFAIK /etc/default/useradd basically only predefines a small set of defaults used when the use...

Re: Different themes, different workspaces

I don't know about setting up different themes, but it should be possible with different backgrounds. A simple script running in the background, checking the workspace every few seconds or so and switching backdrops to match. (Changing themes are probably possible this way, but I'm unsure on what ov...

Re: Change install directory for GOG games

I was trying to work out symlinking, but couldn't get the hang of it. Play around with it, it's not difficult. You can delete the link without deleting the stuff it's linked to (note: I *always* use "ln -s" for a symbolic link, dunno about anything else; deleting a hard link might delete the file i...

Re: Win Raid5 in Mint19

I suspect that the 2nd link's method doesn't work because that's mounting an array that ldmtool hasn't assembled yet, so it doesn't know how to proceed. Not a good thing during a boot sequence. ;) You say adding it to /etc/rc.local doesn't work? How about posting a copy so we can check? Have you ens...

Re: Hard Drives Doesn't Appear After Using Format/Partition Tools

All drives are 2,5 sized and connect with sata cables, so they are fairly new, and they all worked up to when i formatted them. I doubt 4 drives get HW failure at the same time. You might be surprised. You said they were running under a Win machine and I've seen HDDs slowly fail w/out being detecte...
