Re: Security concerns with STEAM

lazarus@Beelzebub ~ $ dpkg -S /usr/bin/steam steam-launcher: /usr/bin/steam :sigh: It wasn't installed via apt, the logs are refreshingly clean of steam. However, dpkg.log does show: 2018-08-16 15:06:05 install steam-launcher:all <none> 1.0.0.55 ...so I guess that I must have authenticated it. Whic...

Security concerns with STEAM

Having had security issues with STEAM under Windows, I deleted it and for a long time went without. Now that I have my Linux Mint system up and running satisfactorily, I thought I'd try it again, given that Linux has much better permissions control. So, after rummaging around for what seemed like fo...

Re: Is booting like this feasible?

Good luck; what's for dinner? Humble pie. :) I'd thought about creating a USB but they're limited in size and I'm sorta trying to think ahead. My idea is that IF she takes to it and is willing to switch over, I could move the HDD internally and boot off it there. Still via switching the Boot Drive ...

Re: Unable to verify sha256sum.txt.gpg for LM19

Copy/Pasta is all I do to grab the sum files. I have noticed that sha256sum.txt.gpg has changed lately. The one I had DL'd some time ago - which checked out fine back then - now gives a bad CRC. When did you DL yours? Try DLing it again, then in a terminal type gpg --refresh-keys to ensure that you ...

Re: New Disk format requirements for using DropBox

In these steps, should I be referencing the proposed folder location rather than ~/Dropbox Yes. An alternative would be to make a folder in /home called Dropbox. ie. /home/Dropbox and instead of mounting /dev/sdb1 in /media/tony/DropBox_A, mount it in /home/Dropbox. (This would offend some 'purists...

Re: Hard Drives Doesn't Appear After Using Format/Partition Tools

You haven't said how 'old' the old drives are. From your description, I suspect the drives are in a state of HW failure. Maybe the platters, maybe their on-board controllers. So, I suggest ignoring the OS side of it for now - Well... as much as you can, given that you need the OS to run the tests! :...

Re: BIOS HDD order changed, how do I fix a warn with RAID5?

Yes, I've thought about that; a few people have suggested I go that way. I use RAID primarily to give me a period of grace when things start to go bad. It's not my "safe storage solution," I make full/incremental air-gap backups for that. I'm of mixed mind when it comes to HW RAID. I guess it comes ...

Is booting like this feasible?

My other half has a Win7 machine that she's loathe to let me set up as a dual-boot. She does want to learn Linux, but not at the risk of her baby. So... in the interest of saving time I'm thinking that I should be able to image my PC's boot & root partitions with clonezilla onto an external U...

BIOS HDD order changed, how do I fix a warn with RAID5?

LM18.3 Cinnamon, RAID5 Due to an... errm... 'oversight' I only just updated my BIOS to the most current version. Consequently a part of getting the PC to boot involved flushing the CMOS and re-entering the desired BIOS settings... but it seems to have detected the HDDs in a different order than it h...

Re: LM18.3 queries on boot fsck check

OK, BIOS fully updated... along with a nasty scare. It hung on boot until I flushed the CMOS, then went in to reconfigure most settings. No real changes to the logfiles, all the pre-existing warns are still there, although I didn't spot the fsck msg this time around. Still, I suspect you're right ab...

Re: LM18.3 queries on boot fsck check

What I think is happening is that your ageing machine can't keep up with the kernel messages :) so you see messages that you wouldn't normally see. I'm fairly certain that an fsck runs automatically on every boot, but it's only a check to make sure the journals are clean, it's not a full check. I t...

Re: LM18.3 queries on boot fsck check

Yes. Yes it is. I've always preferred 2xRAM for size and in this case I have 3TB to play with so went liberal in the near future /sda will be replaced by a 500GB SSD, so /swap will shrink and /sda5 and /sda6 will disappear into the aether. They're handy for now, though. lazarus@Beelzebub ~ $ lsblk N...

Re: LM18.3 queries on boot fsck check

To start with, you should update your BIOS, reboot and see if the message reappears. If it does, I'll need the dmesg output. Ooer! Touché A hit, a palpable hit! In my defence I had upgraded it back when still running Win but it broke the RAID functionality of the mobo so I reverted. In my head it w...

Re: Can I still use kernel 3.19.8?

As a student, a degree of concern is certainly warranted if you only have the one PC. In theory Spectre & Meltdown are more suitable for eavesdropping on your data, rather than actually hijacking your computer. This does not mean that sometime down the road some creative hacker cannot use them for i...

LM18.3 queries on boot fsck check [SOLVED]

LM18.3 Cinnamon Of late I've noticed grub forcing a fs check every boot. It's usually only a momentary, almost subliminal, flash of text underneath the LM loading logo. I've no problems with this, quite happy for it to do so. Except... 1. Has LM18+ always done this? I can't say that I'd noticed it a...

Re: Can I still use kernel 3.19.8?

I suggest that you read up on Meltdown and Spectre and decide for yourself whether you should feel concerned. If you're using your PC for work purposes, you should be concerned. If you're using it for online banking and similarly sensitive data processing, you should be concerned. If you're only usi...

Re: Rain Finally

Things are beginning to looking a tad better for some of us drought-stricken Aussies, thankfully. So far this August we've had 25mm(1") of rain where I am, compared to an average of 60mm(2.4") for the same time over past years. That's an improvement over the 6mm(0.2") total we saw last month; things...
