Re: What's your favorite native Linux game?

What? No-one has mentioned Dwarf Fortress ? It's my #1 by a long shot. For Linux, anyway. 7 Days to Die would be #2, except that for some odd reason it won't run on my PC, no matter how many times I purge/reinstall. (Even tried a fresh LM install!) I also wish I could get TES:Oblivion, TES:S...

I only just asked the same question - with regard to the warn when upgrading - and was pointed at: viewtopic.php?f=42&t=111527#p623968

Works for me.

Excellent link, thank you.

update-initramfs locale warning. Meaning?

I've updated grub and the kernel a few times now and during the update process have noticed a warning re locale. Here's a snippet from the last update: Processing triggers for linux-image-4.15.0-32-generic (4.15.0-32.35~16.04.1) ... /etc/kernel/postinst.d/initramfs-tools: update-initramfs: Generatin...

Re: Higher power consumption LM19 compared to LM18?

If anyone has Mint 19 installed and does not have Cinnamon constantly using > 0 CPU, I would be very interested in knowing what the difference is. I've noted this behavior in all of the PCs I have running Mint 19 Cinnamon (three of them, total). On my main LM18.3 PC, Cinnamon never, ever drops belo...

Re: Higher power consumption LM19 compared to LM18?

TLP or not, it may even be something as simple as default values have changed. eg. screen brightness. I noticed similar with one of my laptops, running LM19 Cinnamon. I reduced screen brightness, idle times for screensaver, etc, etc. and even went so far as to shut off all system sounds. 'Til I noti...

Re: Setting up Mint for a kid

in the web browser, maybe an ad-blocker, privacy check, script-block would work too, and if you are concerned enough, then make Two User Accounts: - one for you - with Admin Rights - one for the kid - with only User's Rights. +1 for this. If the kid has a computer, I'd imagine you're using a router...

Re: Adding a 2nd internal SSD

If you load Linux, go into GParted and partition the SSD as NTFS it should be accessible from both Linux & Win7 as an extra drive. I believe it'll automount on a reboot under the /media dir in Linux, much like a USB... although ideally you'd edit /etc/fstab to specifically mount it where you want. (...

Re: Adding a 2nd internal SSD

Joe's advice is good... but will mount the SSD as a separate device. I'd hazard a guess and say it's how most people would mount a 2nd HDD. But you may want to add the extra file space to an already existing part of the directory structure; it's possible to mount it in such a way that you never even...

Re: Help keeping icons on primary monitor.

You mean icons you create by right-clicking on the desktop? Those, yes, and auto-mount devs such as USB sticks. They seem to randomly go either on the monitor you click or on the primary, it's some sort of bug I guess. You can right click and "Organize Desktop by Name" to bring them all back to the...

Help keeping icons on primary monitor.

LM18.x x64 Mate I've an ASUS laptop that I've just downgraded from LM19 Cinnamon to LM8.3 MATE for performance reasons. (Amongst other things.) It used to run LM18.3 Cinnamon quite happily, apart from slow desktop response, hence my trying MATE. We have it hooked up thru HDMI to a big screen TV for ...

Re: Transferring to new laptop/computer vs. upgrading HD

By default doesn't Clonezilla restore the partitions to the same size as they were before? So imaging a 250GB HDD and 'restoring' it to a 1TB HDD would leave ~700GB unallocated? This elbow room'd make using GParted to move, resize & create desired partitions that li'l bit easier. (I know there are a...

Re: Problems with using tr cmd in bash script.

As I tend to only write minimal scripts, character classes are one of those things I've always wondered about but never needed to use. I can see now where they'd be very handy indeed! Although I am slightly ashamed that I didn't think of mv "$@" "${@// /_}" for myself... obviously I have much to lea...

Re: Problems with using tr cmd in bash script.

Yep. You've put your finger on the problem; my scripts aren't evaluating correctly. I've tried a few different things - including changing quotes - but I just cannot get the lines incorporating the tr cmd to return the string I expect/want. Perhaps a good nap will change things. :| In the meantime, ...

Problems with using tr cmd in bash script. [SOLVED]

OK, I've been using a script to replace white spaces in filenames with underscores. #!/bin/bash name=`echo "$@" | sed "s/\ /\_/g"` mv "$@" $name Having come across the tr function, I was delighted & thought I could streamline things using: #!/bin/bash mv "$@" '$(tr " " "_" <<< "$@")' ...but this fal...

Re: Timeshift. Oh dear.

It is possible to include User Data with TS. It's not set by default, but that's easy enough to change. When I first installed it on LM 18.3 that's exactly how I set it up... until I realised it was also copying a 250GB virtual drive for my VM that was kept in /home. I quickly learned how to ...

Will do. Let's do !!SCIENCE!! (Sorry... too much Dwarf Fortress. ) Nope. Stupidly, when it came time to install I started it off and then went for a cuppa while it did it's thing. Which, of course, meant it was all wiped clean. Brainfarts happened, the price was paid. :( I have backups, but d...

Re: Going back to LM 18.3

I have an Asus laptop (I know, I know) that was running LM18.3 Cinnamon fairly well, if a bit slowly. It's primarily just a media player -> TV from the NAS and it handled that job well. It seemed to run nicely under LM19 Cinnamon LiveUSB, so I tried a fresh install for curiosities sake. Faster boot ...

Keeping /home in Cinnamon 19 -> Mate 18.3 downgrade

Silly question, perhaps... ...but I'm about to degrade a laptop from LM19 Cinnamon back to LM18.3 Mate. I had unrealistic expectations. /home is already mounted on a seperate partition so it should be a straight-forward fresh install. However, as I'm also switching from Cinnamon to Mate, would it be...

Nobody?

OK, I'm not particularly happy with LM19 Cinnamon on it anyway, I had unrealistic expectations, so I'll probably downgrade it back to LM18.3 Mate.

Would've been nice to have some idea on what went aglay, though.
