Re: Document Scanner won't start

I know my IP for the printer is OK, I've set it as a reserved one in my modem/router. I still think you should print the network report from the printer itself to positively verify the IP it is using. My brother uses an IP that is off by one number from what the modem says. Scan only works if that ...

Re: Document Scanner won't start

If Lance thinks it safe to try, then go ahead. Even if it doesn't cure your problem, it shouldn't do any harm. I truly appreciate the politeness. The only reason I know anything about Brother printers, is because I've installed several models on my and my friends machines. Sometimes the IP address ...

Re: Panel Icon repeat

You need to provide what version of Mint you are using. I'll assume it's Cinnamon 19.x or 20. Right click any unopened icon on your panel and choose preferences>configure. Select the panel tab and in the dropdown, choose Application Name. Close window and see if it's the way you want.

Re: Document Scanner won't start

Go to your printers menu and print a network report. From it verify the IP address You likely need to uninstall the Brother packages Terminal 1. sudo dpkg -l | grep Brother This will list all installed files. Start at the top with brscan-skey and work you way down, uninstalling each one with sudo dp...

Re: Creating a Timeshift Snapshot on External Media

Before making any snapshots, you can see how much space root is using by launching Disks. That will be the approximate size of the 1st snapshot. Any snapshots made after on a given partition are incremental (only the changes ie updates or software). This is true if you use the default Timeshift sett...

Re: Cannot install grub-customizer !

I just tested it during a live session of Mint 20 Cinnamon using a flash drive as the live session media. It installed seamlessly with the Terminal using:

Code: Select all

sudo apt install grub-customizer

Re: How to safely investigate and repair some suspect USB external drives

My feeling isl if you can get your data, and it's important, then use the live session, or as you said the temp install of Mint. Once completed it should be pretty easy to really clean the drives either with commands or Disks, then reformat them. If you tamper with those partitions, you might loose ...

Re: Creating a Timeshift Snapshot on External Media

You can use Disks in the Menu under Accessories. Highlight the drive on the left and click the gears under the central window. Choose Format and follow the prompts and choose Ext4. If this is a flash drive they are very slow to make snapshots. A portable drive is much better.

Re: Have You Ever Tried To Take a PC Back To Windows?

I suspect the machine is locked into secure boot and I can see no way to disable it.
You can reflash the BIOS, or jumper it. I've also done it by removing the battery and CMOS battery and holding the power button down.

Re: Re-use bootable usb drives

Try to format it to Ext4 just to see if you can. If so we will try something else to get it to FAT32, it that's what you want

Code: Select all

sudo mkfs.ext4 /dev/sdx
x is to be replaced with the correct letter.

Re: Have You Ever Tried To Take a PC Back To Windows?

Is there a setting in your BIOS to restore it to defaults? If so, you could try that. Also is the BIOS updated to the newest version?
