Re: Linux Mint, Wine 3.0, Photoline32 V21

I think it is unlikely that LXDE vs. Cinnamon is the difference. It is more likely that your wineconfig (prefix) is not configured the same way. Is it possible that in your LXDE install you had installed other software in Wine, or had performed other changes either with wineconfig or with winetricks?

Re: Mint Debian Editon 3 VS Mint Cinnamon19

LMDE is rolling release, so potentially less stable. It is not as widely used. As mentioned, it doesn't support PPAs. It may require more technical understanding to get it to do what you want. And it is more of a test bed than anything else (although it is fine to use.) Really, I think the bottom li...

How come the 'Firewall' in Linux Mint isn't turned on by default?
In Mint 19.1 the welcome wizard has a step for setting up the firewall. Not sure why it was absent previously.

nemo far more stable and responsive than windows explorer
Really? I certainly haven't found this to be true, although I happily note that the release notes for 19.1 say that Nemo has been heavily optimized.

Re: ‘Five Eyes’ governments call on tech giants to build encryption backdoors — or else

This is all so bizarre to me... Not that the governments WANT to do this but that they are stupid enough to think this is viable... Building a "back door" into encryption basically weakens the encryption to the point of being practically useless. I know of no noteworthy cryptologist who has stated t...

Re: Why did you decide to install Linux Mint??

I was a huge Microsoft fan since the early 90's and was a Windows software developer. Windows 7 is probably the slickest OS ever made, at least a little more polished than Mint/Cinnamon. But Microsoft really lost their way ... It has been all down-hill since Windows 7. Microsoft has been aggressivel...

Re: Malwares and Rootkits: A serious threat???

Firejail seems like one of the solutions I was looking for to isolate my system from my Opera browser. Do any of you know if firejail can protect against ransomeware attacks in case I ever click on an infected email attachment or ever click on an infected website's link? The default security profil...

Re: Malwares and Rootkits: A serious threat???

Any other suggestion? I agree with most of what has been said. If you are sensible about what you install and such, your biggest vulnerability will be your browser. This is what I recommend. It may be overkill, but it pretty much guarantees you are safe on the browser front: 1. Add Firefox plug-in ...

Re: A day in the life.....of a Cinnamon themer

Well, keep up the good work. Indeed! I hate it when you get a computer to look just the way you like and it gets taken away from you ... I loved the look of Windows 7 with the Aero Glass. Then Microsoft deliberately made it impossible to keep that theme. Everything is driven from a uxtheme dll - th...

Re: Oh how I love the taste of blackberries in the morning!

I love blueberries and they are high in anti-oxidants. Also, you absorb the anti-oxidants better if you pair them with yogurt, so I make smoothies with blueberries and yogurt (plus apple juice, orange juice, a fresh banana, milled flaxseed, and oat bran, and occasionally other fruit if I have some l...

Access 2010 does run will with Crossover. Some of the exotic ODBC connectors may not work, but I'm using it for manipulating standard Access database files (.accdb) and it is working well.

Re: Launch Firejailed apps from Docks

When I installed Firejail for the first time and ran sudo firecfg I ran into some inconveniences like for instance I wasn't able to open up Gedit/Xed anymore. Yes, the default sandboxing for Xed and the other x-apps has a problem and they won't launch after firecfg. I've been meaning to report that...

Re: Launch Firejailed apps from Docks

I think the normal way to do this is to make a symbolic link for firefox in /usr/local/bin to /usr/bin/firejail. Then any method through which firefox is invoked launches the firejailed version. (Firecfg sets this up automatically.)

Re: Any recommendations for Linux Mint anti-virus and internet security?

Looks like no one has mentioned Firejail. This is a really awesome tool for hardening your browser. Most exploits are likely to come in through weaknesses in the browser - Java, JavaScript, Flash, etc. Firejail can sandbox Firefox so it has severely limited access to the system. It can actually sand...

I am running Access 2010 under Crossover and it works fine. I haven't tried the exotic ODBC connectors, but basic functionality works fine. Haven't tried with native Wine but it should be possible. did you try that with the later Cx-18 version - as well ? or just with Cx-17 only ?. I can confirm th...

[Solved] Setting Avatar

Hello,

I'm trying to set my avatar but I cant get it to work. I'm using remote avatar but it always says "URL is not valid." I'm quite sure the URL is valid, the image isn't too large, and the format matches what others are using (I've tried JPG and PNG.) Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!
Greg
