Re: Usernames

When I was an undergraduate at University of Florida, we got accounts on a VAX mainframe (not Unix) and they were named after trees. The largest VAX was Maple, so I called myself Mage of Maple. I still use it 25+ years later because the username is so unusual that no matter where I go I never have t...

Yep - using Access is an problem, & you can't even run it under ./wine either.
:(
I am running Access 2010 under Crossover and it works fine. I haven't tried the exotic ODBC connectors, but basic functionality works fine. Haven't tried with native Wine but it should be possible.

Re: And the Most Popular Desktop is............

EDIT: it created an Error Message, unable to install my Office 2003 CD, I know the CD key is valid, have used it before. Office 2003 can be a problem - it requires activation and Microsoft killed the activation servers for it long ago, basically pulling the rug out from under people who purchased i...

Re: And the Most Popular Desktop is............

Access is pretty unique and I didn't find anything to replace it, nor did I manage to get it running properly in Wine - the only thing that worked for me was running it in a windows VM. This seemed a rather silly solution when I could dual boot with Win10. Access 2010 is working fine for me with Cr...

Sadly, dual-boot. The day they release One Note for Linux is the day I go for total erase!
I'm running OneNote 2010 in Linux with Crossover and it runs fine.

Re: Out of space on /boot

The problem is probably that your first attempt without the script got stuck in the middle so it's still trying to recover from that. As smurphos suggested, do try to run the last script from my post you found and see if that works - that will try removing all the old kernel packages in one go so i...

[SOLVED] Out of space on /boot

Hello fellow Minters, I know this has come up before, and I've tried reading previous threads and using the solutions provided, but they are not working for me (at least not in any long-term way.) And I think that is because I've made the situation worse for myself by "fixing" things by just deletin...

Thank you for this informative reply. That's certainly bad news but good to know. Maybe IBM/RedHat will do something in the vein but I doubt it. I'm not sure they care about anything but cloud but we can hope...

Linux on a tablet

I think I basically know the answer to this, given that I've been searching the web and haven't turned up much of anything that is encouraging, but here goes ... Does anyone know of a cost-effective tablet that can run Linux? Doesn't have to be Mint, but Android doesn't count (because I don't want G...

Re: Washed out desktop background image in Mint 19 Virtualbox VM

I am experiencing this as well. Switching to a different background, waiting a second, and then switching back fixes it. Switch and switch back too quickly and it does not. This is a strange one ... I have not previously had this problem. (Not sure if it is caused by the update to Mint or an update ...

Never mind - this problem is solved. It appears that a just-released update has fixed it on both machines.

Thanks!

Re: Mint 19 on shutdown at-spi-bus-launcher not responding

Sounds like it may be a bug navigate to this location /usr/lib/at-spi2-core/at-spi2-registryd you will have to use sudo or open as root and right click it and select properties and uncheck the box that allows it to be executable - reboot and see if that worked Removing execute privileges from at-sp...

[SOLVED] Mint 19 on shutdown at-spi-bus-launcher not responding

Hello, After switching to Mint 19, when I try to shut down I always get a "program is still running" dialog box telling me that at-spi-bus-launcher is not responding. I click "shut down anyway" and all is well, but it is annoying. This happens on a clean install of Mint 19 Mate and also on a VM runn...

Wondering why a fresh install of Mint 19 XFCE comes with Ubuntu boookmarks in Firefox by default? One debian bookmark as well. And not a single Mint bookmark.
It does have Mint as the home page :)

This might be an opportunity, though. Perhaps a bookmark to the "tutorials" Mint Forum?

you can configure Timeshift to back up your /home directory in the settings
You can, but you probably shouldn't. If you discover a system instability and want to roll back, you probably don't want any changes you've made to your documents to be rolled back also.

Re: Ciinamon 3.8.x - Mint 19 Additional Window Borders / Metacity Themes

The original versions are still shipped with the distro. They just don't show in Cinnamon chooser for window borders. Mint also doesn't develop or maintain the originals. If I'm not mistaken these new ones don't support versions of metacity older than v3. That means they don't work under Mate. So i...

Re: Ciinamon 3.8.x - Mint 19 Additional Window Borders / Metacity Themes

Awesome. Thanks again, Smurphos! Now that these work flawlessly, let's hope they get included in the distro again. As discussed in another thread, many people are underwhelmed by the default themes. It's a shock to upgrade and find the themes you've grown accustom to gone. And if people are checking...
