aliases exist but .bash_aliases doesnt exist - SOLVED

Am getting adventurous and would like to dabble with shellscripts and aliases. Typing in alias yields the following, (I assume they were hard wired into the installation files) bill@Bill-Linux ~ $ alias alias alert='notify-send --urgency=low -i "$([ $? = 0 ] && echo terminal || echo error)" "$(histo...

Re: How to allow Cairo dock to appear on top of Cinnamon task bar?

See attached screenshots. Configure Cairo to use "3D Plane View" This lifts the icons above the bar on my screen - might get it a bit higher with offset applied. Whoops cannot post a file greater than 200KB - One out of 3 aint bad - gotta go and learn how to reduce a png file. Fixed - see attached. ...

Thanks for the answers.

software - does it "bed down" & "run in"

Sounds daft I know, With mechanical stuff there is sometimes a running in or bedding down period where you run the machine gently for a while allowing things to fit together properly and get properly synchronised. Its quite strange but my Linux Mint 18.3 Cinnamon seems to have done just that. It doe...

Out of curiosity, what are you trying to record? Most video stuff can be dowloaded without needing to capture the screen.
It helps me to learn Italian if I can listen to the video and see the translation subtitles at the same time.

Recording Videos [SOLVED]

Hey, Didn't know where to put this. Tried various ways of capturing the monitor screen this morning. The best combination that I found was 1. Simplescreenrecorder to record the video, used the mkv format and left all other options as default, drew a rectangle to define the capture area. 2. Bombono t...

Re: Firefox struggling but Vivaldi is fine

Firefox was slow at starting and slow doing things after it had started.

Snowflakes tip worked well - its running just as fast as Vivaldi now that I set up a new profile.

Thanks for the tips

Hello,

I have had similar issues and they were fixed by installing the correct nvidia driver and then using the nvidia-settings program - see this thread

YEEEHA !! JOB DONE - Much gleeful exuberance

Thanks for the tips.

I just booted back into the main install and all my files are still here

Gparted gave me a serious looking warning about shifting the start of the sda4 and possibly messing up my boot, but nothing happened.

Quite happy. yes.

Thanks again.

Re: resizing - have I lost 30Gb forever ?

Thanks Pierre, Couldn't turn lock off on the sda4 Had to turn swapoff in the other part of the partition first. Then both locks dissappeared as soon as I turned swap off Then I was able to resize the extended partition and turned swap back on. Not sure if that was necessary. Didn't have to unmount t...

Re: resizing - have I lost 30Gb forever ?

Hello,

I thought that by booting up from the USB I was booting up from live media.

I believe that you cannot resize any partitions if they are mounted.

Have I got this hopelessly wrong somehow ?

Re: upgrade to mint 19 going horribly wrong

Can you really choose between UEFI and Legacy - my newbie impression is that you must boot up in one or the other and that is not a choice - rather it is dictated by the hardware on your computer. Keen to bettwer understand this .... what should I be reading ?
