Re: 18.3 dual boot trial great, but wont boot after full install

Pressing esape whilst booting takes me to a boot menu where I can do various things.

Do I have to change something in here ? vague memories of reading about secure boot disabling, off to do some searching.

18.3 dual boot trial great, but wont boot after full install SOLVED

Hello, After approx 2 weeks trial on a dual boot my wife was happy with Linux Mint and was prepared to kill windows 10 with a full boot. So now I have done a full install 3 times and it wont boot up after a full install. As per the release notes I held down the shift key to edit the splash / nomodes...

Re: Consider making Polo the default file manager in Mint Cinnamon

Could you use Double Commander or Midnight Commander to copy a lot of files quickly - they are available as standard add-ons under the Mint menu system.

Re: Font Rendering Lnux Mint 18.3 Cinnamon

Trytip, Thanks for your efforts in suggesting the fix. The only things that make any difference to my fonts are font type, size and bold. The various options - hinting aliasing rgb etc - at the bottom of that font settings page have no effect whatsoever on my system I agree with the OP rggarding fuz...

Recommend python sites / tutorials / forums / books ?

Hello,

Have started doing an open learning python course at edx.

Was wondering about other useful sites or books for a python newb.

Will do some googling but if anyone has any recommendations could save me - and others in future some wading through sites advertising stuff for sale.

Thanks

G'day Catweazel, Thanks heaps. Glad to see you are still here and giving advice to newbies like me. The current menu must have been modified, the option discussed in the thread above is now gone Another way is to press <ALT>+<F3> and choose Advanced -> Special window settings change to the tab Windo...

Re: Mapping the desktop size to screen display vs Dock Positions

Imagine this : Your Linux desktop occupies a space of 41cm x 76cm but your screen is only 40 x 75cm. This means that useful things like the menu button and the task bars and the docks are off the screen and although you can estimate where they might be and try to click on them it makes everything ve...

On a laptop that wasnt able to wifi I connected my mobile phone via a usb cable and told the phone to let the computer use the internet, that might be worth trying.

Re: What sends noobs running back to Windows?

There is an idea that is promoted quite heavily in recent computer magazines and internet articles that new Linux installs are easy and the system works well straight away. I can see that people might be disappointed if, after believing this, they hit a few hurdles Speaking as a freshly "minted" new...

Mapping the desktop size to screen display vs Dock Positions

Hello, Thought I'd post this in case I save other folk a bit of time. In order to see my panels and menus I always have to remap my desktop to my screensize every time I login - easy enough to do with NVIDIA control panel. Unfortunately the two popular docking programs Plank and Docky seem to ignore...

Re: NVIDIA control panel : where to save config file ?

Thanks for the suggestion. I get to change the "underprojection" on the nvidia server screen whereas the screen in control panel doesn't give that option so it doesn't give as much control. Thanks again for the suggestion.

Re: NVIDIA control panel : where to save config file ?

xorg.config is deleted every time mint 18.3 starts so its a manual reset every time no matter where you save it.

But its still a fabulous fix for my dodgy desktop and an incentive to learn how to write a little script to do this correction automatically

Re: COuld my computer be too old to use Linux Mint 18 Cinnamon

Possible workaround is if I zoom in using Firefox zoom function.

Maybe I just have to find the correct view zoom setting in each software package to make the fonts less fuzzy but not too huge.

COuld my computer be too old to use Linux Mint 18 Cinnamon

inxi -FZXD attached along with a few screenshots. My wife's brand new laptop has no problems with desktop being too big and all of the text is sharp, clear crisp and tiny yet perfectly legible. My computer is 10 years old and the TV screen is 6 years old - could that be a significant problem ? 2 iss...

Re: NVIDIA control panel : where to save config file ?

Thanks Matty,

Was quite puzzled about that - I thought config files had to go to special directories, its clever that you can park it where you feel like and it remembers. Will assume that the next time I need to save a file

NVIDIA control panel : where to save config file ?

Hello, Found a terrific solution for preventing the edges of my desktop exceeding the screensize - see this video for Windows 10 solution which is almost identical to Linux solution. Apparently quite common when using TV as computer monitor. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0yza-fRX6Dc See attached s...
