Re: Bigger thumbnails like in Windows 7

Try icon view That seems to work now, after pumping the system with almost all available updates. I guess I should have tested that before posting the topic. When I installed Mint for the first time (before any updates) the icon view didn't zoom in when I used Ctrl + Scroll Up. Thanks, smurphos! :m...

[18.3] Boot question about non-bootable CD/DVD

Before I ask my question, I have to describe some things. First, I've set the boot order for hardware to be the DVD-ROM first and then the SSD where Mint is installed. Secondly, I have removed the quiet splash from grub, so that I can be made aware of any startup errors. And this is where I noticed ...

[SOLVED] Bigger thumbnails like in Windows 7

Windows 7 has an option to display "extra large thumbnails" which allows better viewing of the image without having to open each of them. So I wonder - is there any way I cane make the thumbnails on the screenshot bigger like in Windows 7? Or at least closer to the size in Windows 7? On the image be...

No one is that crazy to use Rhytmbox (no offense, mate :) ). I use Audacious - never had a single problem with a radio. ;)

Funny memes about Linux

I searched the forum for such a topic and didn't find any. I suggest we put all the funny memes about Linux we find on the internet, here. And so I start: https://s20.postimg.cc/hnb0ibl0t/scary-windows.png https://viralviralvideos.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/39638120.jpg https://pics.me.me/nux-fr...

Re: Backups - best options

I don't trust integrated software such as Timeshift (or similar stuff when I used to use Dumbows). The only way I know I'll have a fully operational system is Partclone (part of Clonezilla). Z6 compressed the OS takes 1.9GB and I can store it wherever I want. Unpacks in under 2 minutes with all of m...

Sure, that works too. But if the user doesn't know which file to edit, using the GUI is easiest way. ;)

Re: [18.3] Installing latest version of Mesa?

Nah, Mint 19 is forcing me to install microcode. I don't want microcode and never needed it. Mint 19 is becoming too much like Dumbows 10 - forcing users to install things they don't want. So I'd rather get used to the poor performance of the game than installing Mint 19. Unless there's a way to hav...

Re: Install virtualbox on different hard drive.

You don't need to install it on a different drive. Install VB as usual, then run it, open its preferences and change location for all VMs. I do this all the time when I need Windows. VB on the Linux drive (sdb1) and the VM itself goes on sdc1. That won't work as described for an existing VM. It wil...

Re: Install virtualbox on different hard drive.

I have an SSD (/dev/sdb1) that I have my primary OS (Mint 18) on. I also have a 1tb (/dev/sda1) sata drive that I want to install virtualbox on. I need to run some windows apps, but don't want to corrupt my SSD with M$ crap. Can't seem to find a way to set virtualbox to that drive. Drive is split i...

Re: [18.3] Installing latest version of Mesa?

Bc the game I'm playing has poor performance since the last update and I was hoping updating mesa could improve it a little.

[18.3] Installing latest version of Mesa?

When I open Synaptic and type 'mesa', it appears my version is 8.3.1. However, I found on the internet the latest version is 18.1.7. So, how can I install it on Mint 18.3, avoiding manual compilation, if possible?

Re: nvidia driver takes over ownership of everything

I didn't try. I just got used to this and doesn't impress me anymore. But I thought I should report it anyway.
Before I install the nvidia driver everything is ok. After rebooting for the driver to work, all the rights go nuts.

nvidia driver takes over ownership of everything

In the last about 2 months I did some monitoring when ownership's going nuts and so far I can tell this: the nvidia driver (whether manually installed the latest version OR the version from the driver manager) somehow locks changing ownership of everything - files, folders, hard drives, flash drives...

Re: 10 Reasons to Replace Windows with Linux

Can you imagine a plane run by Windows 10? In the middle of the flight when the plane is up high in the sky, Windows 10 decides to update and here comes the message: "Windows update process has begun. Shutting all engines down. Sit tight and hold on to something in the next 24 hours".

Re: 10 Reasons to Replace Windows with Linux

Windows 10 update policy is just insane. You would think a company with that much money could find a better way to handle OS updates. You get a choice when shutting down and it needs an update: Update then shut down - which means you must babysit your computer to make sure Windows doesn't hang or o...
