Re: What sends noobs running back to Windows?

What requires them to deal with that? I must being doing something different because I never have to mess with it. Even a .deb is just a double click install. Deb - yes, but some specific programs come in a tarball archive which you can't just double click, unless you have autodeb. But since they'r...

might take a bit longer to find and download one you like if it's not in the repos.
And what do you have left to do when you don't like what's in the repo? Manually change each icon.

Re: Weak wifi signal if not right next to router on my Lenovo laptop

You didn't say what brand and model your router is.
You need to set its power to the highest level. If it's a TP-LINK, this is the "where" and the "how":

With this setting I have full coverage at nearly 8 meters away from the router.

Re: Praise For Tara 19

No problems with 19 here. Fine release. Note that 19 has a brand-new codebase, so some teething troubles are inevitably to be expected.... Over time, the updates should iron those out. Maybe so but I still prefer to wait for at least 19.3 before I upgrade to it. Besides, there's another t...

Re: Why oh Why can't we make Linux better looking

Fonts, Icons, why can't we make it better looking? Granted Apple and Microsoft have ridiculous budgets for that sort of thing, but with all the brilliant talent out there, why can't we make Linux look better? I love LIbre Office, but its icons are ugly compared to others. For some that is a big tur...

Re: What sends noobs running back to Windows?

what reasons do you think send new people running away from Linux? Based on what I've read recently in a few forums and Fakebook groups, I think the main reason for that are the tarball archives, because the noobs can't install them by double click and their brains crash with BSOD. So they choose t...

As soon as Thunderbird 60 will be available in the official Ubuntu repositories
Can't wait for that! The current version has a major bug I can't stand anymore and I can only hope they have fixed it in v60.

Major difference between ALSAs from local source and the default source

I noticed a major difference in the ALSA driver when it was downloaded from the default software sources (USA and UK) - those that were set in the OS by default and the local ones I chose. In the default repo ALSA driver all options are bugged, except for 5.1 output. Selecting either one of the rest...

Re: Does the version 19 Cinnamon fix some problems in the version 18?

In a Windows and Linx Mind dual boot, the sound doesn't work properly on Linxu Mint You need to use ALSA driver. It's installed by default but you must set Mint to use it manually. Open "sound settings" and if you see a device named "Line Out Integrated Sound", that's ALSA and when you click it, yo...

Re: LibreOffice 6 not working in mint 19 Cinnamon

I think the LO itself is bugged cuz I had similar issues with it in 18.3. So I uninstalled it and switched to Softmaker's FreeOffice 2018 for Linux (natively supported). No problems there ever since.

Re: Firefox problem - Server Not Found. Alternative browsers?

This suggests that either something is wrong with your sources list files or with the repo mirror servers which you use. Well, these are the default repoes that come with 18.3 installation of OS (before updates start popping up in the status panel). Right after installation of OS I type "firefox" i...

Re: Firefox problem - Server Not Found. Alternative browsers?

I am on 18.3 Cinnamon and that is the exact version of FF that I have now. When you install it from an external source as the one I gave him in my previous post, it automatically adds the repo for future updates. But if you keep using the default Firefox that comes with 18.3, it's an older version ...

Re: Firefox problem - Server Not Found. Alternative browsers?

The consensus across several forums is that Firefox - or recent Firefox updates - are to blame. This is confirmed by the fact that my (Android/Chrome) smartphone can browse flawlessly using wifi via the the same router and ISP connection. Since you didn't mention the Firefox version, I can only ass...

Re: Package loading

What I get from your description is that you entered the wrong file type. It's not 'nrdeb', it's just 'deb' and 'deb-src'. AFAIK there's no such a file extension as 'nrdeb'.

Possible bug with maximized windows

I'm using Cinnamox-Rhino as a theme for everything and followed smurhos' advice to use Transparent Panels extension. At first I thought the problem I'm gonna describe is caused by either one but further experiment reveals it might be a Mint bug with maximized windows. Normally the highest transparen...

Mint 18.3 on fujitsu siemens amilo?

Next week I'll have to change the hard disk of a fujitsu siemens amilo laptop and I was thinking to install Mint on it but then it occured to me that Mint might not support it. Has anyone tried installing Mint on a so old laptop? And if there's no native support in Mint, where do I get the drivers? ...

Looks like it will need to mention firefox in the css files, after all. I tried editing every css file I could find and it still won't change anything.

If that means what I think it means, why do you have to do it? That doesn't sound like a normal nvidia behavior.

Re: Changing Grub Default Boot

That's one option if one's gonna do it via Live CD/USB or while booted to a different install. I'm not sure grub-install works under chroot, though. Mind, I did try installing grub-customizer on my system and tried to add an ISO boot. It works but you have to boot the live env of the OS whose grub ...
