Re: Switched from Windows

Welcome! The cool thing about GNU/Linux is that you don't have to be restricted to one flavor of the kernel. There are so many different variations for different people. Ubuntu, based on Debian, is by far the most commonly used OS, which Linux Mint is built upon. You might've set yourself up for fai...

Re: Approperiate distro for old PC [SOLVED]

Xfce is a good DE to use on an ancient computer (although a tiling window manager such as i3 would be even better), regardless of distro. Ubuntu is the base for Linux Mint (except for Linux Mint Debian Edition), so that is really more dependent on the packaging system. Luckily for you, you can strip...

Re: Linux Mint 17.x reaches end of life in April

I literally cannot bring myself to upgrade from 17.1 Rebecca even though the LTS is about over. It works perfectly on my 2005 HP hardware. To upgrade means leaving my iPod Classic (which I use every day) in the dust. Banshee has so far been the only Linux software that has worked to manually place ...

Re: I do NOT miss winduhs!!

Linux Mint is such a great starter distro. It's funny that it's based on Ubuntu (another newbie-friendly distro), yet I often hear more praise and worship going the way of the former. Why is that? I think for one, it cuts through the nonsense that Canonical likes to put its consumers through (such a...

Re: xfce4-alsa-plugin

I do that, but there are still some pieces around. Fair point. The Poettering plague will never truly go away. You can make your own fairly easily (well, I adjust the volume with the keyboard and "amixer sset Master,0 1-" (or 1+) routine) Yeah, I already had the keybindings set in place. I'd just l...

Re: I dread what is comming

Funny story. Someone I know had problems with her HP desktop (i.e. Windows 10 would just reload for eternity), so I took a look at it and installed Linux Mint. Weeks later, she's enjoying working on her documents and running her business from it. This is someone who admits to not knowing much about ...

xfce4-alsa-plugin

Hello, I need help with installing the xfce4-alsa-plugin package to my copy of Linux Mint 18.3, using Xfce as the DE. I chose to purge PulseAudio and its components. In turn, all sound will go through ALSA and/or OSS for a simpler environment. Sadly, Xfce's panel plugins don't offer an ALSA-compatib...

Re: [How To] Integrate Firefox with dark themes

I use Pale Moon, which is based on Firefox. I vastly prefer it by a mile.

With that said, if you also use Pale Moon, there's an extension that you can install. It's called Advanced Night Mode. Really liking this!

Re: Manjaro overtakes Mint in Distrowatch page-hit rankings

Both are really good distros for their own reasons, and when combined, are utilized at their finest.

It's fine to be loyal to a brand, but when the developers screw up, you'd care enough to call them out. I'm not a fanboy whatsoever. Just someone who wants this great kernel to thrive!

Re: Software that you would like to have for Linux

The only reason I use Wine is to play vintage RPG games made by people from all over the world, due to the developers making their codebase restricted. Therefore, I'll need to keep using this "emulator" to be able to enjoy gaming without a Windows installation.

Re: What game controllers support linux?

Linux Mint should be able to detect your controllers instantly, regardless of type. As long as it can plug into any computer, then the OS shouldn't object to it, unless there was a misconfiguration on your part. I highly recommend using AntiMicro for managing your gamepads. It's better to assign the...

Re: Windows 7 Refugee

Highly appreciated, everyone. Needless to say, my faith in computing has been restored with the full-time switch to GNU/Linux. I like playing around with different distros, but Linux Mint is good enough for most of my needs. I'd like to get to the point where I can ditch things like Systemd and use ...

Thank you all for the welcome. :) Yes, some of us here are Windows 7 refugees, or to be exact, Windows 10 refugees who have escaped from the oppressive forces of dictator M$. Windows 7 Refugee

Hello to everyone at the Linux Mint forums! :D My initial experience with GNU/Linux wasn't that long ago, but I remember when Canonical would distribute free Ubuntu installation DVDs in 2011, and after I was told about this OS, I went ahead with placing an "order" on one. I received it and was looki...
