Re: There's 2 of me on this computer

The users command tells who is logged in to the computer. Pretty much every shell you have open counts you as being logged in. So in this case you have the default shell that started your GUI plus the terminal window that you're running the user command from. Open five terminal windows and it'll lis...

Re: NVIDIA, TwinView, Wine & Fullscreen - Gaming

Dual monitors in Linux is kind of glitchy (IMHO) and is going to impact your game performance. To get your games working right I would recommend setting Wine to run in a virtual desktop. Run winecfg, go to the graphics tab, check emulate a virtual desktop and set the size you want. This will create ...

Re: I don't know if this would be considered technical or no

Are there any perks to the 64-bit distro? Reading the downloads it sounds as if there's no perks, just instability . I mean are there any graphical advantages or do you pretty much have the same visual effects with both? 64 bit generally performs better than 32 OS's. The bits is referring to the nu...

Re: Replace Ubuntu with Mint on WinXP dual boot

Assuming you don't want to back anything up from your Ubuntu install it's pretty simple. Just launch the Mint installer and when you get to partitioning select Manual. Find the partition your Ubuntu install was on, highlight it and click edit. Check the format box and change the mount point to /. If...

Re: [solved] desktop effects/ i've broke my mint

decided at this stage it'd be quicker to format/ reinstall and stop messing around with the desktop flashy effects that got me into the mess uh, Compiz didn't cause this. /dev/sda5: unexpected inconsistency run fsk manually (i.e without -a or -p options) bash: /usr/bin/mint-fortune: no such file or...

Re: Putty client

Looks like you just want ssh tunneling. Just google "ssh tunneling ubuntu" and there should be plenty of tutorials to use. Here's a pretty simple one that should work:

Re: Grep is not working

how would I add /home/verdow/.bin to the user environment so that su will see it? It's really handy having my scripts in my home directory, but none of them can be run as root until I create a symbolic link from ~/.bin/script to /usr/local/bin/script I know this tread has become sidetracked, but we'...

Re: Compiling Problems

I downloaded pdfcrack and messed around with it. You're right, it doesn't need a ./config and doesn't have make install setup. Since it's such a small program I guess they just left it up to us to install manually. Using a package manager is always the preferred way to install a program, but if you ...

Wait a sec... pdfcrack is in the repos. You don't have to compile from source, just run

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install pdfcrack

Re: NASA TV

Did you install anything to try and get it to work? It should work out of the box, I haven't messed with any codecs on this computer (I'm at work :D) and it works alright. It's possible that by trying to install new codecs or plugins you disabled some of the default ones.

Re: GNU web based invoicing system

I don't speak Spanish, but on the website I did see logos for Linux, Apache, PHP and MySQL so I'm guessing you just want a LAMP server. These are fairly common and there are plenty of tutorials on how to set them up. This will let you host a site, but to create the site you'll either need to pay som...

Re: ISO mount point

you can run

Code: Select all

mount -l
to see where everything on your system is mounted. I usually just manually mount .iso's manually:

Code: Select all

mkdir mounted
sudo mount -o loop image.iso mounted/
and then when you're done

Code: Select all

sudo umount mounted/
rmdir mounted
