Re: Compiling Problems

I think you forgot

Code: Select all

sudo make install
When compiling from source you usually follow these commands:

Code: Select all

./configure
make
sudo make install

Re: Grep is not working

Maybe a problem combining with SUDO? Using sudo would be running that command as a different user, root. There's no reason to run that command as root. Using root with these commands won't hurt anything, but if you keep arbitrarily running stuff as root you have a much higher chance of breaking som...

Re: Modern Warfare 2 in Mint 8

Left 4 Dead 1 plays decent when you turn a bunch of stuff down which really hurts the mood of the game. It's still a lot of work to get running, and Left 4 Dead 2 is even worse. I would only recommend playing Left 4 Dead in Linux if you've played it a lot, otherwise you should run it in Windows so y...

Re: Grep is not working

are you switching users or using different terminal sessions when it doesn't work? Grep is there at /bin/grep so the problem is most likely with the shell finding grep and not the installation of grep itself. Do you have a weird partition table? Also run echo $PATH right after it doesn't work to see...

Re: Modern Warfare 2 in Mint 8

Check this page out:
http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.p ... &iId=18348

It looks like Modern Warfare 2 works in Wine, but just barely. According to the comments there have been some regressions with recent versions of Wine, so you might want to try downgrading to 1.1.35.

Re: Wine + Eve Online 100% CPU usage per core

So what gives? Is there some mega problem with linux requiring mega hardware to run games Sort of, yeah. Linux is a totally different OS than Windows. Wine does an amazing job running games, but it's not as good as on Windows; some games have performance issues and not all games work properly. You'...

Re: Grep is not working

run echo $PATH and paste back the output. $PATH tells the shell where to look for commands and if you accidentally clear it you won't be able to run anything. My path looks like this: verdow@w1-techcage-02 ~ $ echo $PATH /usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games Try run...

Re: Is it possible to set up all my messenger accounts in CL

Try Finch.
AWESOME. ^_^

I use screen anyways so it's easy for me to keep it up and switch back and forth. Also, because it uses purple conkyPidgin recognizes it and I can still see who's online in Conky.

Re: Is it possible to set up all my messenger accounts in CL

Is it possible for me to say use yahoo in command line, and msn in the terminal? At the moment I am using pidgen, but was wondering if I could use the terminal instead. That would be really awesome, but I don't think this is possible right now. You can use IRC through the terminal, but that's it. I...

Re: This may be 2 threads in 1 im not sure!

my main concern is i like how my os is setup, spent loads of time tweaking it and playing around with it, if i do a clean install i don't want to loose the settings If your system is exactly the way you like it, then why upgrade? I ran into a similar situation with my desktop. I got it setup so per...

Re: This may be 2 threads in 1 im not sure!

I am a bit nervous in upgrading to mint 8 as I have a laptop, toshiba Satallite L30-113 and i dont know what the hardware support is like Just burn a Mint 8 CD, boot to it and see if it works. If Mint 7 works, chances are Mint 8 will work without any problems. my second query is how do I get into k...

Re: cannot configure thunderbird

smtp configure should be ok. Because I can send mail with mutt. This is just a guess, but what if you check Use Username and Password (third screenshot) and log in using your local account on the computer. When you're using Mutt you're already logged into a terminal window, what might be happening ...

Re: Creating a single unbroken audio file in Linux

Just a fluke. Trying to explain what cat does exactly is getting into some seriously deep Linux stuff (over my head right now) but it basically starts at the beginning of a file and feeds it into standard output. By using > you can redirect that output from the terminal to another file as kind of a ...

Re: Boot Options

Hmm... looks like you have two boot loaders installed. Did you by chance install Mint 7 inside Windows or did you create a separate partition for it and install Mint from the live disc? Also run sudo fdisk -l mount -l and paste back the output. Editing the grub2 menu is a little harder, they got rid...

Re: Linux Mint Books...

Pretty much any Ubuntu tutorial you find will work for Mint. When I have a problem I usually Google "error message ubuntu" instead of "error message Mint" just because Ubuntu has such a large user base. If you have a tutorial and you get stuck on something, just make a post here and we'll be glad to...

Re: Creating a single unbroken audio file in Linux

depending on the way the audio file is written this might work: cat song1.mp3 song2.mp3 > together.mp3 a command like this is usually used to put two text files together, but can also be used to stick together .mpg files (like on a home dvd where everything's broken up). I don't know if it will work...
