Re: Is Winedoors still supported?

Running Wine as root is bad practice, it really doesn't help it run any better and it gives it the power to really mess up your system if something goes wrong. What probably happened was the CD was mounted as root, you used sudo to copy the files and then Wine couldn't work with them unless run as r...

Re: Music player question(s)

The sweeping arrow means this is a symbolic link and when you open it, it's actually taking you somewhere else. The files are actually being stored in /media/files/Music/ on your 320 GB hard drive. /home/gary/Music isn't actually a folder, it's just a special file that redirects anything accessing i...

Re: Music player question(s)

looks like /media/files is still owned by root, try running this again: sudo chown -R gary /media/files then see if you can create the Music directory cd /media/files/ mkdir Music EDIT EDIT: I just noticed you already created a Music directory. Try something else instead, like Videos. If you still c...

Re: Music player question(s)

I misread your first post, I thought you already had Music on the drive. lost+found is created most of the time when you make a new file system. Just run cd /media/files sudo rm -r lost+found to get rid of it. Also, before you create the symbolic link (the ln -s ... command) run mkdir /media/files/M...

Re: Music player question(s)

Run sudo mkdir /media/files gksudo gedit /etc/fstab and add the following line at the bottom of the file: /dev/sdb1 /media/files/ ext4 defaults 0 0 save and exit gedit. Reboot your computer to see if it automatically mounts correctly. To check it run cd /media/files ls and you should see a list of y...

Re: Music player question(s)

You'll probably need to add the partition to your fstab so it will automatically mount when you boot. What I do is I have my data hard drive mounted to /media/files/ and then just create symbolic links to my home directory for convenience. That way you can just use the Music folder already in your h...

Re: Is Winedoors still supported?

The multiple CD thing is a common problem with Wine and the most reliable solution I've found is just to copy both CD's to your hard drive and run it from there. Be sure to copy everything to the same folder and if a few files are the same, just overwrite. The important stuff won't have the same name.

Re: had to shut down improperly now wont restart

For future reference ctrl-alt-backspace will kill X and allow you to log back in and if you're really desperate ctrl-alt-f3 will drop you to a terminal allowing you to shutdown using sudo shutdown -h now If you could just write down and tell us exactly what's on the screen when it freezes we can try...

Re: Mint 8 on Acer Aspire One D250

I have a first-gen Acer Aspire One (don't know if it's the same model, at work now and it's at home) and everything worked out of the box with Mint. I never had sound issues, but Ubuntu did require some finagling to get wireless working. I say just create a bootable USB stick and try it out.

Re: where is the virtual wine c drive!!!!!!

Running a Wine program at root will not in any way make it run better. The entire C drive for Wine is owned by a standard user, everything it needs is right there so there is no reason to run it as root. Also, running as root within Wine elevates Wine and the program together to root, between Wine a...

Re: Errors in Quanta installation

I used Quanta for a web design class and it worked fine for coding simple HTML/CSS websites but a lot of features were broken (the WYSIWYG editor doesn't exist) and the program itself was pretty rough around the edges. To me it feels like a program that should still be in Beta. Errors like that were...

Re: Wine and World of Warcraft

what version of Wine are you using? Run winecfg go to the about tab and post back the version. Also, any time you want to install a program check out the Wine App Database first. Here's the WoW page: http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=17421 Just about everything you could w...

Re: If Windows program can not run on Wine, then what must I

Wine 1.01 is very old, the most recent version is 1.1.41. Since Wine changes so much I would highly recommend just uninstalling all versions of Wine on your computer, find a Wine version that should work for your program http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&sTitle=Browse%20Ap...

Did you try installing the shoutcast addon from within songbird? I always use the shoutcast stations and whenever I install songbird on Windows I have to manually install the shoutcast addon.

Re: App will only start as root

If your config files are owned by root it could also stop the program from working. I'm not sure where they are, but if you run cd find -user root it will list all files owned by root in your home directory. If it is the config files, you'll see them somewhere in this list. it will only start if I l...

Re: Do I need to worry about these kernal vulnrabilitys?

Very rarely (imho) are kernel vulnerabilities anything desktop users need to worry about. For example, the specific ones you linked to were all about Denial of Service attacks which only affect servers.

Re: WINE: Need help with Office 2007

If I was you I would install it on another computer and copy the folder accross to your wine c: drive. sometimes setups just dont work whilst the actual program runs fine. While this is true sometimes, in this case it just needs an override. Every time I install Office 07 on Linux, I have to do thi...
