Re: File permissions, users and linux

a good article that is less than 5 years old? For something as fundamental as users and groups in Unix even a 5 year old article can be helpful. Can someone please explain how file permissions in linux work? Oh, there's a lot to learn. But I can give you some basics. First thing is usernames don't ...

Re: Internet not functioning all the time

Odd. I see people say things about Network-manager, but it's NEVER given me any probs. Must be missing something. I stick with Network Manager most of the time and only switch to wicd if I have a connection that's constantly being dropped. Our office at work has poor wireless reception so all the U...

Re: PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment and non-standard prefixs

where would the "PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment" be found? Not sure, but here's a really good guess of what you need to do: verdow@techcage-07 ~ $ export PKG_CONFIG_PATH='/path/to/somewhere/' verdow@techcage-07 ~ $ echo $PKG_CONFIG_PATH /path/to/somewhere/ verdow@techcage-07 ~ $ command to install pro...

Re: where are custom themes

it is called .themes I don't think that's all the theme configs. I only see my custom themes in there and I don't know if that has the mods I made to them in Appearance. Also if you're using Emerald or some other theme manager they could be somewhere else. Copying your whole home directory will get...

Re: Internet not functioning all the time

I would try wicd network manager. It's not as user friendly as the default network manager, but it recovers from wireless connection problems better. Run sudo apt-get install wicd wicd-gtk to install it and disable the gnome network manager before you use it (Menu -> Control Center -> Startup Applic...

Re: where are custom themes

If i copy over my home folder contents to my new install will i cause problems? Shouldn't, that's the recommended way to upgrade. Even if you do cause problems, they should be easy to fix. Where are my custom theme teaks held? As a general rule of thumb if you don't need root access to change it (y...

Re: Creating a shortcut to Rdesktop

The simplest way would be to create a Menu entry. Right click on the Menu button -> Edit Menu, select a category to put it in, click New Item on the left, type in a name for the launcher, type your command in the command box and select an icon if you want. I downloaded a .png of the Windows flag/win...

Re: Raid Array Errors

i have 10 years work on the drives which i am trying not to loose If it's that important I'd hire a professional. Techs from Buffalo have advised me to build a linux system and software mount a raid card and the drives, then i can read my data from the partitions. Software raid doesn't require a ra...

Re: Mint is so slow

Could it be the ssd disk ? Oh, yeah... that could be it. I bought the version with the 160 GB HD because I heard a lot of complaints about the access times on the SSD models. Mint is incredibly slow on netbooks. On my asus, Did you have one of the older Eee PC's with the Via C7? In my experience th...

Re: Mint is so slow

I have a first gen Acer Aspire one and it runs the main version of Mint fine. You probably have a rogue process eating up all your CPU's time.

Re: WYSIWYG program for making sites

There aren't many choices for a Linux WYSIWYG, because most web developers code manually. If you are going to be doing much web editing I would highly suggest learning HTML/CSS. You don't have to learn much to make a good looking site, just enough to take a free template and change it up for your ne...

Re: Flash Being Problematic

you could try a different version of flash.

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree
I would also try disabling flash for awhile to see if it's really the problem.

Re: Nvidia drivers ?? Live CD ?? How to restart X without re

The Nvidia drivers will not install to the live CD due to lack of room(the drivers are over 150 Megabytes). Plus, there is no mechanism on the CD to install changes or other files to the OS while running from the CD. Also, I'm fairly certain that just restarting X will not do. You have to reboot to...

Re: application fails to launch

Run ps aux | grep -v grep | grep teamviewer to see if it's lost running in the background somewhere. (doubtful) Debugging something like this is hard, but interesting. Run which teamviewer to see the full path to the teamviewer launcher. Hopefully this will be a small launcher script that we can loo...

Re: Static internal IP for Synergy?

I've had issues with some consumer routers communicating with statically assigned IP addresses. I really don't see any problem with using hostnames in synergy (it's what I do) if they work. I would try hostnames first, then a static IP on the server second. Even on a network without a DNS to identif...

Re: Theme/Icon questions

I played around a little and found a fairly simple and reliable way to get shortcuts to your desktop. You can drag and drop items from your Menu to the desktop. This will copy a small script to your desktop which holds some extra data about the shortcut (icon info, command to execute, different lang...

When I made the links, How did you make the links? I opened my desktop as root and started changing the names of the links to what they should say. Logging in as root is a bad idea. Any file you change as root in your home directory then becomes owned by root and won't be usable by standard users. ...

Re: Apt-get from windows??

For some reason, linux mint can not access the internet any more Do you not have internet access where your Mint machine is or is something in Mint preventing it from accessing the internet? If it's a problem with Mint we should probably work on fixing that instead. If not, and you just don't have ...

Re: Dual monitor glitch

I would take advantage of that and use some dual monitor wallpapers. With Gimp you can scale and crop images to the exact size of your monitors then stick them together. I have a strong background in graphics so I usually edit my wallpapers anyways so to me it's really easy. If you don't know how to...
