Re: Aptitude & Synaptic

I've never used aptitude, but I go back and forth between apt-get and synaptic quite often without any problems. Not many people use aptitude any more (that I know of) but if you prefer using it better I would try apt. Apt is just a simple bash script included with Mint that makes apt-get easier to ...

Re: Upgrade question Mint 8

In any case, it should not hurt.
Of all the packages to update these are some of the most likely to cause problems. I would back up you xorg.conf

Code: Select all

sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.bak

Re: moving home

This tutorial explains it pretty well:

I would keep a live disc handy in case you mess up editing fstab and can't get back into your system. Post back if you have any questions.

Re: Connect/Mount/MAP Linux-Based NAS

A lot of the time Linux won't pick up the host names of other computers on the network. On you Windows box hit super-r, type in cmd then run ping hostname (replace hostname iwth the name of your NAS) to get the ip address then try putting smb://x.x.x.x (replace the x's with the IP address of yoru NA...

These two make a great combo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813121381 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116091 I have this running my media center. It'd be a little more expensive, but you could upgrade your processor later with any LGA775 Core 2 Duo or...

Re: New Build Advice

I use an Acer Aspire One and we just got in some Eee Tops at work which are running Ubuntu and the Atom processors run fine. Those just use the Intel Mobile graphics and they run most flash stuff just fine, the only problem is You Tube videos can sometimes be a little laggy because of the weak GPU. ...

Re: How to quit a fullscreen game?

Ctrl-Alt-F1 should get you to a console, then you could do ps -e | less or ps aux | less and check the process ID (PID) of the game. Once you have noted it down, press "q" to leave the list top is really handy since it sorts the processes by CPU load so if you have a stuck game it's pretty much gua...

Re: Need help formatting drive to NTFS

Just thought I'd add that Vista won't install if the target partition isn't flagged as bootable which isn't fixable from the Vista partitioner.

Re: Need some help with mdadm RAID 1

Unfortunately I'm not that knowledgeable about mdadm, I just know how to use it with a working array. I had a similar problem with a Raid 5 array that I never figured out, I finally gave up and just patched the problem with a startup script and called it close enough. The only other thing I know to ...

Re: Auto Conky for Mint

Try running these and see if they get the right results:

Number of processor cores:

Code: Select all

grep processor /proc/cpuinfo | wc -l
Mounted hard drives:

Code: Select all

mount -l | grep /dev/[m,h,s]d | awk '{print $3}'
I'm thinking I'll need to so something to filter out cdroms.

Re: mounting an iso wiht the command line

sudo mount -t iso9660 -o loop /home/matthew/videos/district 9.iso /cd you have a space before the 9 with no escape character. Since space is what's used to differentiate between arguments in a command if you have a space in a file name you have to tell the system you have a space with \. The correc...

Auto Conky for Mint

I was poking around the community site last night and saw Mint Conky at the top of the list of all the ideas. This is something I can do, so I decided to start messing with an auto-configure script for conky. There are a few things I'd like some suggestions on: Figuring out how many CPU cores a comp...

Re: Long Term Experiences?

I respectfully disagree with DataMan and mick55. I do all the updates and don't have any problems, even on my Mint 7 box which has been running the same install since Mint 7 came out. In a work environment I'd understand not updating but on a personal computer I don't see a reason not to. Even if yo...

Re: not sure where to post this

If by gba you mean a Game Boy Advanced Emulator there's one already in the repos so you don't have to mess with Wine. Just run sudo apt-get install visualboyadvance visualboyadvance-gtk to install it or search for it in Package Manager. EDIT: Kaye beat me to it, but don't skip the -gtk one or you wo...
