Re: Mint Ubuntu Dual Boot Raid 0 Single Home

I'm impressed you were able to boot off a RAID 0 mdadm array, I tried it a couple years ago and could never get it to work. Do you have a link to the tutorial you used to do it?

Re: Mint Ubuntu Dual Boot Raid 0 Single Home

You totally lost me in the third paragraph. But as far as sharing the home, I think it's a bad idea. If you've ever used an Ubuntu home in Mint it will make your Mint look EXACTLY like Ubuntu since all of your gnome configs are in your home directory. The Ubuntu icon probably would be a gnome icon i...

Re: Missing Login Screen?

The login screen is gdm. Without gdm your computer will boot to the command line and you have to manually start X once you log in.

Re: Is there a way to boot HD installed Mint into RAM?

Not without some serious hacking...
You could customize a CD to be similar to your HD install and then boot that to RAM but it'd be hard to do updates and stuff like that.

Re: PXE Install

I'm actually working on a similar project here at work. We're going with Tiny Core for the floor computers (27MB image booted to RAM) and will probably use Debian for the managers stations once we get to that. Debian can be netbooted and there are plenty of versions to choose from. Also if your stat...

Re: Missing Login Screen?

gdm is separate from gnome so reinstall gnome won't help anything. Try this:

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm

Re: Write to an ISO image

The most basic tool for editing .iso's is mkisofs. It's not as user friendly as some of the other mentions, but it gets the job done and is easy to add to a script if you're doing this a lot. I use it for pushing changes to Tiny Core .iso's

Re: Terminal commands

Now I'm looking all over the Net for the complete set of commands, I don't think there is one giant list since the commands come from everywhere; there are some from your shell, some built into the kernel, distro specific commands and then the commands from all the programs you install. My system h...

I've had that happen before; post the output from:

Code: Select all

cat /proc/mdstat

Re: Empathy. It doesn't work.

In Pidgin go to Tools -> Preferences -> Interface and set Show System Tray Icon to Always. Now you can just exit Pidgin and it'll minimize it to your system tray. Is that what you wanted?

Sometimes it helps to log out and log back in after you've connected the external monitor.

Re: Running Windows programs without CD

Not sure if this will help, but you can try running your program from an actual .iso. Open any CD copying program and copy your CD to an .iso image. Create a new folder that you want the CD to be in (Ex. ~/Downloads/eJay_CDx2/) and then mount the .iso with this command: sudo mount -o loop ~/Download...

Re: website compiler

There isn't really a WYSIWYG web editor that can compare to Dreamweaver. Your best bet will be to learn basic HTML/CSS and code the website manually. WYSIWYG editors are handy sometimes, but you shouldn't rely on them completely. HTML isn't that complex to learn (not like learning an actual programm...

Re: Need some help with mdadm RAID 1

Whenever you create a raid array in mdadm it builds everything without destroying any data. You can delete and recreate the array (through mdadm) as many times as you want and as long as you don't format the drives you shouldn't loose anything. Once I accidentally messed up the creation of a 500GB R...

Re: How to install a LAMP server in Helena

However, I see that PHP version is 5.2.10-2ubuntu6.4
I would like to install PHP 5.3.2 recently released, how do I do that?
Unless there's a specific feature in 5.3.2 you really need, I'd just wait for the package in the repos to be updated.

Re: GNU web based invoicing system

What I want is a web-based system to invoice my clients.
Linux is your host OS, Apache hosts the website, MySQL holds your client's data and PHP is what you program the front end in.
