Re: How to download fonts?

Try restarting Gimp, also try it in another program like Open Office to see if it's something with your font or the program itself.

Re: How to download fonts?

What program are you trying to use these in? Sometimes programs need to be restarted before they'll recognize new fonts.

Also, paste back the output from

Code: Select all

ls -al ~/.fonts/
just for fun.

Re: How to download fonts?

Run this to create a .fonts directory in your home:

Code: Select all

cd
mkdir .fonts
Put any Windows fonts you want to install in this directory. You can use the command line or just hit Ctrl-H in nautilus to view hidden directories and then just drag/drop them in there.

Re: Running Windows programs without CD

Put your CD in the drive and copy everything to a folder. (Ex. ~/Downloads/eJay_CD/) Run winecfg go to the drives tab, click Add, select a random drive letter, click OK, click browse, find the folder you dropped the CD files into then click OK. Click Show Advanced and then set type to CDROM. This wi...

Re: Windows doesn't fill laptop screen

Thank you, that got me into terminal, but at the first line I'm getting: mv: cannot stat '/etc/X11/xorg.conf' : No such file or directory Don't worry about the first line then, that was just to backup your existing xorg.conf if you had one. Since you're using a terminal outside of X use these instr...

Re: Windows doesn't fill laptop screen

Odd... you can also copy and paste or hit Alt-Ctrl-F3 and re-log into a different tty. If you hit Alt-Ctrl-F3 it doesn't kill your X session, just hit Alt-Ctrl-F7 to get back.

EDIT: gedit won't work with the Alt-Ctrl-F3 method though... you'll have to use nano.

Re: Windows doesn't fill laptop screen

I gave you the wrong filenames earlier, it should be /etc/X11/xorg.conf instead of /etc/xorg.conf. My original post has been updated, hope I didn't cause you too much grief yet... :?

Re: I don't know if this would be considered technical or no

Depending on the depth of the pipeline the processor is actually probably going through anywhere from 320 - 576 bits/cycle with a 64-bit architecture.

Re: Windows doesn't fill laptop screen

I don't know what lspci is.... Any time you see some commands in a code window like that or someone asks you to pasteback the output from something it means they want you to run it in a terminal window. It's a Sony Vaio PCG-FX370 Doesn't look good, Googleing this model just got me a bunch of Xorg b...

Re: dual boot vs VM vs Wine for Win apps

Play around with Wine and try everything in there but still keep your XP partition in case you don't get everything to work. If your apps aren't very graphically challenging you can try a VM but I personally don't like messing with those. Basically I'd suggest trying all three and see what you like/...

Re: Windows doesn't fill laptop screen

Past back the output from

Code: Select all

lspci
Also go to Menu -> Control Center -> Hardware Drivers and install any recommended video drivers.

EDIT: also, the exact model number of your lappy will help if the hardware drivers thing doesn't work.

Re: All browsers can be hacked.

I used to hang out with a guy that went to those types of competitions and the one thing I learned from him is that if someone who really knows what they're doing sits down and decides to hack your desktop, they're getting in. With servers you can lock them down more because they don't need as much ...

Re: How do I install clamav

You don't need to do that, it's already included in Mint's default repos. Just run

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install clamav
to install it.
