Re: GRUB vanished

Hmmmm, there may be a way to do it without reinstalling grub, but you'll need to be a bit adventurous and experiment. Here's the grub 2 manual https://www.gnu.org/software/grub/manual/grub/grub.html#GNU_002fLinux The first line here says this. Set GRUB’s root device to the same drive as GNU/Linux’s....

Re: GRUB vanished

Yes we know that, but to get that, you have to boot into 18.3 and reinstall grub from there. The links are for other reasons to reinstall grub, but you need to follow them anyway. After you've done that, 18.3 will be at the top. The other option, is to find a newer version you're interested in, and ...

Re: GRUB vanished

OK, looks like you have problems. I think you have to reinstall grub, but that's something I haven't had to do yet. I've just done a search and found this. http://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/2013/11/reinstall-grub-ubuntu-wont-boot/ It's not quite the same situation as yours, but could give you a fe...

Re: GRUB vanished

Good post Schultz. My books are ancient and for grub 1, didn't help much at all.

But I still don't see how to change which OS controls grub. Hopefully it won't be necessary, the only problem will probably be if 17.3 did the last grub update.

Re: GRUB vanished

I've had a chance to think a bit more about this overnight. The first OS in the grub boot menu is where grub is pointing to. So if that's one of the OS's you're keeping, you should be OK. If 17.3 is at the top, then you need to shift where grub points to. Deep in the distant past I remember playing ...

Re: Understanding partitions.

I've never dealt with encrypted partitions, so I'm nit sure about not seeing what the partitions are. But usually there's a small partition that has the boot stuff in it, Is that the first "EFI" sda1? the second sda2 is probably the swap partition. If so you don't need to look at either. sda3 is the...

Re: GRUB vanished

You'll probably get a better answer from a more knowledgeable person, but my understanding is, that grub is in two parts. The first being in the MBR, that points to the grub entry in /boot of whichever OS, that was last installed. So it's a matter of editing the entry in the MBR. I have no idea abou...

Re: Installing Firewall

Interesting, I just checked my firewall config that came with mint mate 18.3 and it's version 16.04.1. It's in "control centre, Internet and Network". I'll have a look what's in my 19.1 version and get back. OK so my 19.1 mint mate has version 18.04.0. So I think, forget installing anything else, go...

Re: Background image help please.

I'm using mate not cinnamon, but to set wallpaper all I have to do is right click on an image and select "set as wallpaper". I'm also running multiple os's, my data is on a separate petition. Rather than copying all the screen saver images to "Picture" I just make a link from the image folder I want...

So, I infer here that murchmatthew, was after a speech recognition app, but what he's downloaded is only the inner workings.
Probably best to look around for an app that does what he wants

I'm not cluey enough to solve your problem, but I'm sure the people who can will want more info.
