Re: Is Terminal Knowledge Necessary

Just a word of caution. From a recent post here, a person was running terminal commands he'd got somewhere else on the internet, he came very close to doing damage. The wrong terminal commands can kill your system. From what I've seen in the last year, this site is very safe and well moderated, stic...

Re: Messy, Disorganized File and Directory Placement When Installing Programs (And Hello...)

I guess linux operating systems are very modular in nature, with stuff coming from all over the place, that probably explains the differences.

I always use the clone tool, you can change the size of the "brush" for big areas, and back to small for small areas.

Re: MATE or Cinammon?

I haven't heard that cinammon is less stable than mate, but it is heavier on resources. As I have an older machine I run mate, but if you have the resources, I think it's just a matter of preference which Desktop you get on with. Any way I'm running virtual box with w7 without a problem, but I did i...

Re: how to make hard drive bootable

So, there's a few questions here, how did grub get on the hard drive? It world seem that you have installed linux on the computer, but grub isn't finding the operating system. Does this sound possible? If this is the case, there's 2 options. Somebody here will be able to guide you how to fix grub fr...

Re: HDD/SSD setup

SSD is certainly a lot quicker, ideal for stuff that doesn't change a lot. But there seems to be different opinions over how many read write cycles it's good for. Some say modern devices are just as good as HDDs other's advise to store frequently changing stuff on HDDs I've gone the safe route and h...

Re: issue opening (accessing) the hd memory

Hi dani,
Before anybody can help you, they'll need more info

Copy and paste this into a terminal

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
And then copy and paste the results back here, highlight it and click on the "</>" button above.

You should find the "terminal" in "system tools"

Does kobo use a windows style "com port"?

I've got those sort of devices working in wine by creating a link between the usb and the wine com ports.

Re: Win XP sp3 Verify/Authenticate ISO

I've downloaded many distros and never had a faulty one, so if it gets too hard, you could always take a gamble that it's OK. Certainly not recommended. But I'm wondering if you can do the check with the live stick prior to installing??

GIMP can also save as *.jpg and *.jpeg, you just have to choose it.
I don't think this quite correct, if you choose "save" or "save as" it's only in XCF format, you have to choose "export"

I'm afraid I don't understand your intentions. Why does XP need to get involved?

You only need to download the iso image and burn to a thumb drive.

Re: Repurposing an old rig

this machine was running mint mate fine with only 4gb ram. I installed a SSD, that sped it up no end, the I've added another 2gb ram so I can run windows 7 in virtual box. That's fine as long as I don't do too much other stuff with mint. I envy your 8gb, that would improve virtual box a lot. You may...

Re: Install Arduino IDE with terminal

Hi Charles, This is beyond my expertise, but I belief you can add the "PPA" (the url of your version source) to "software sources". Whether this will work in your case I can't say, or how to do it. But if you manage it, your version should show up in the software manager. However there could be depe...

arduino IDE is in the repos, just type arduino into the software manager and that will do all the installing, unless you want to install a non repo version.
