Re: How to prevent linux mint from modify windows boot disk ?

If I had that problem, I'd let mint take over disk one, then set up grub, so you see the boot menu. Then you can select either operating system without having to change boot order in bios. You can also configure grub to boot windows first, so if you boot disk one you'll get windows by default. Kerne...

Re: What is the meaning of network in Linux mint?

My understanding is that it's for communicating in a local network. As Pierre says it could be ethernet or wifi, I'm using one here. This PC connects to the modem via cable and laptops via wifi, using "Samba" for a windows network setup. I can copy files between all computers. If you don't have a lo...

Re: Zoom and security of files

Successfully joined my on line keep fit class, using zoom in a virtual box. I'd prefer not to load zoom, but it's what our keep fit class has transitioned to, now that we can't meet physically.

I tested last night in virtual box, but couldn't get sound. I didn't try to resolve this, so there may be a solution, I'll look for it later.
Seems to be working now, but there's 2 sets of volume controls. I turned the v-box one right up.

Re: Wine doesn't open

>>>> wine notepad command opens blank notepad That means wine is working fine. "notepad" is a windows program it won't run in linux. You've just run it in wine. As we've said wine isn't a program, it's an environment for running windows programs, I think you're expecting it to "do" something by it ...

try leaving the "x86" out. You've found the program in "program files" not in "program files x86"

Re: Wine doesn't open

As far as I know, wine doesn't "open". It's an environment for windows programs to "open" in.
Try running a windows program and see if it works.

Re: Where do the optical drive files show in the directory tree?

well you can make sure of that assumption by unplugging it and then see what you get. I think you'll be better off starting a new thread, asking how to do what you want to do with you're internal/external usb/sata drive. The current title doesn't really describe your problem. That way you may get so...

Re: Where do the optical drive files show in the directory tree?

May be I've found the discrepancy, this desktop has virtual box, the laptop doesn't. With an unmounted USB memory stick inserted, this desktop has /dev/vboxusb/001/004 And lsusb comes up with this. decrep@PCSSD:~$ lsusb Bus 002 Device 006: ID 04d9:1603 Holtek Semiconductor, Inc. Re: Where do the optical drive files show in the directory tree?

With it plugged in but not mounted, try lsusb That will show if it's in there or not. If it automounts, I'm assuming it must be in /dev somewhere. Well that's weird my laptop has /dev/usb but my desktop doesn't, and they are both 19.3 mate. I'll see if I can find where usb is. OK so in this desktop ...

Re: Where do the optical drive files show in the directory tree?

That looks like a generic linux instruction, different flavours do stuff differently so don't take it for granted that anything there applies to XFCE Do you have GUI file browser? When mounted the DVD should show up in that, you should be able to check it's mount point in the "location" space at the...

Re: Setting up the Linux 19.3 to Install other distros?

You'll need to repartition the HDD to accommodate multiple OSs. There are a few complexities involved, the experts will need to know more about your computer to be able to help you. Copy and paste, inxi -Fxxxrz into a terminal and post the result back in the </> code brackets. This will give a detai...

Re: Questions in preparation for booting

your live USB stick will be able to check how much space you have, it can grab space from your windows partition, but of course back up data and defrag windows first. You can change it later with the USB stick, but not from the installed OS, but it's better to get it right first time.

Book marks from the same browser should be OK, but if you have Internet explorer book marks, I doubt they will be any good, but I could be wrong. Same with app data, if the app runs in linux, it should be OK, if the data is in a proprietary format, it may or may not be readable

Re: Is it possible to have 3 OSs installed?

All that need go on / (root) is the OS, data can be a shared NTFS partion. /, I think has to be ext4 not NTFS, certainly you'll loose the advantage of a journaling file system if you do manage to get root on a NTFS partition.
