Re: Pre-switch Windows 7/dual boot questions

I've kept windows 7 on this machine, but disabled it's internet connection. There's just a few things that only talk to windows, so occasionally I need it. If I needed it more often, I'd run it in an emulator, like "virtual box" saves having to reboot.

Re: Laptop "popped" during software update. Now unable to login.

An old tower of mine had a few caps around the CPU that looked a bit like those, replacing them fixed the computer. But possibly not as easy on a laptop mobo. The caps are only a few $s so would be worth a try, if that's what you find in there.

There are many many threads on here about viruses and spyware. The overwhelming consensus is that they aren't needed with mint

If you don't specify the full path the current directory is used, in most cases this is /home/you, unless you

Code: Select all

cd
to the directory in question

Re: How to look inside /dev/ttyUSB0 ?

Sorry Bill, it's a bit confusing I know, my notes to myself tend to be a bit cryptic, and there's a lot of stuff in there that I've copied and pasted from other people, with no clear indication what is what. But I did get it to work, with a couple of devices.

Re: How to look inside /dev/ttyUSB0 ?

I've had a similar problem connecting usb devices in wine, I had to make a link between /dev/tty/usb0 and windows com port. I forget the exact process, and I'm away from the computer I did it on. But here's the notes I made during the process, there's some failures included, so read it carefully' Fr...

Re: Java scripts

Not sure I follow, what do you want to download?
If you have the NoScript icon in the top panel of firefox, just click on it. Then you can "allow" whatever sites you need.

Re: [SOLVED] Dual booting with separate drives

Yes, go to /etc/default/grub and open it as administrator. This is what you'll see # If you change this file, run 'update-grub' afterwards to update # /boot/grub/grub.cfg. # For full documentation of the options in this file, see: # info -f grub -n 'Simple configuration' GRUB_DEFAULT=0 GRUB_TIMEOUT_...

Re: Dual booting with seperate drives

I think you need to change boot priority in bios so that you boot from the linux drive, if that doesn't show windows in the grub menu, you need to do

Code: Select all

sudo update-grub

Re: Windows 10 partition not visible

Windows can't see linux partitions, if the install went correctly, you should get the grub bootloader on start up, giving you the choice between mint and windows. If you aren't seeing that, then grub may be configured to boot straight into windows, or grub didn't get loaded. If you use your install ...

Re: Mint size & file structure

During the installation process, you can choose the size of the mint partition. I've always used the "other" option, I'm not sure what happens if you choose, "alongside windows". There's also a thing called "timeshift" this can use heaps of memory if not set up carefully, it's probably best to use a...

Re: partition question

Can't give you step by step, my memory is too faulty to rely on. But you can't partition a mounted drive, that's why you use the Mint install media, and that's all you need. Grub should still handle booting into Vista, with out the need of a windows recovery disc.

Re: change boot sequence

Dorothy, that "first line" brings up a text editor with admin privileges, so you can modify the grub config file to change the boot order. If you didn't see the text editor with the grub file, then something else is wrong. pbear is correct, it's always best to copy and paste commands rather than typ...

pbear, The OP is correct I had exactly the same warning following the first line exactly. But you are also correct the instructions work, if you disregard the warning, our newbie was undoubtedly phased by it and didn't press on. mike@mike-ThinkPad:~$ xed admin:///etc/default/grub ** (xed:2529): WARN...
