Re: File Transfer

Hello subhamlinux

Is this between 2 computers with Mint, or from a Windows computer to a Mint one, or vice versa?

Also which version of Mint?

It's an issue for 2033...
I thought it would be more imminent, given it's gone from A to U in 14 years?

With Mint 20 "Ulyana" now out (ish), we're not far off the end of the alphabet. What's going to happen after the "Z" edition? Go back to "A" but do names ending in "B"? Or start again but with male names? Or will Clem take a leaf from Windows 10 and say Linux Mint 25 Z__a will be the last edition, w...

Re: Is Linux Mint Debian or Ubuntu ?

Hello trexxon

Mint is based on Ubuntu, which is based on Debian, so you'll want the Debian/Ubuntu option. Once you've downloaded the .deb file, double-click it and it will install.

Re: linux mint on lenovo y540

While we're at it - to fix the backlight problem, once you've installed Mint and the nvidia driver, open the terminal and enter the below command: sudo nano /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-nvidia.conf Enter your password, then, before EndSection , add the line: Option "RegistryDwords" "EnableBrightnes...

Re: linux mint on lenovo y540

Right - half of this is from memory, as I can't remember what BIOS settings I changed and what was already set this way, but... On booting, when the LEGION logo first appears, repeatedly press F2 to get into the BIOS setup. On the Exit tab, I seem to remember I needed to disable "OS Optimized Defaul...

Re: linux mint on lenovo y540

Forgot about that sorry - yes had to change the BIOS settings, but again was quite straightforward. I won't be able to get onto my laptop for a few hours so I'll reply again later.

Re: linux mint on lenovo y540

Hello suhas_97 I've recently installed Mint 19.3 Cinnamon edition on my new Lenovo Y540-17IRH laptop and it works flawlessly, apart from the brightness controls didn't work at first after installing the nvidia driver, but that was very easily fixed. In terms of installing it, I presume you've instal...

Re: Another Timeshift Question. Sorry

The system can be fairly easily re-installed if needed; a bit of a nuisance, yes. Disaster, no. I suppose it is nice to have restore points when something causes problems with the system but, not at the cost of possibly losing /home. Timeshift really is to cover that "bit of a nuisance". If somethi...

Re: Looking for more help regarding Live DVD

Hello PCMan007 Most of the drivers in Linux are built into the kernel so you won't need to install any mobo drivers - once you've installed, check the Driver Manager and that'll show you any additional ones you may need (likely for your graphics card). Antivirus you won't need - Linux is inherently ...

Re: Access Windows documents from Linux

Hi Franzi,

If you go into your file manager you should see your Windows partition in the list on the left hand side. Open that up and you should be able to access your documents - Linux can access Windows (ntfs) partitions just fine.

Re: Rummaging around and ......

It's great looking back on stuff like this. You don't notice your needs creeping (or leaping) up until you look back and think, how did we cope? It suited our needs at the time, but how did we used to manage, when we can't manage with the enormous specs we've got now? I remember for my first home-bu...

Re: Keyboard mappings - use right ctrl key as Fn

Right, figured it out with xmodmap and some googling. First I needed to define the right ctrl key as Mode_switch : xmodmap -e "keycode 105 = Mode_switch" and then redefine the actions for the arrow keys: xmodmap -e "keycode 113 = Left NoSymbol Home" xmodmap -e "keycode 114 = Right NoSymbol End" xmod...

Re: Looking for a way to access my MYSQL db on my windows partition

All I can think of, is if you can log into mysql in the terminal on the Linux side - sudo mysql -u root -p (it will ask for the sudo password, then the mysql password) - enter the below: USE mysql; UPDATE USER SET plugin="mysql_native_password"; quit; Then restart mysql - or restart into Windows and...

Re: Noisy external HDD, and no SMART data

sudo smartctl -a /dev/sdb gave me an error "Unknown USB bridge", a bit of googling had me add in the -d sat option and I got the below: iain@lenovo-y540:~$ sudo smartctl -a -d sat /dev/sdb smartctl 6.6 2016-05-31 r4324 [x86_64-linux-5.3.0-53-generic] (local build) Copyright (C) 2002-16, Bruce Allen...

Noisy external HDD, and no SMART data

Today I set about reformatting an external HDD (a 2TB WD My Passport), connected over USB, for backups. I selected ext4 LUKS with full erase in gnome-disks and set it off, knowing it would take a good few hours (I did the same on another 2TB drive a few days ago). Since gnome-disks doesn't have a pr...

Re: Keyboard mappings - use right ctrl key as Fn

Right, some googling and playing about with xev | grep keycode tells me that keycode is 200, but it also detects 37 (left ctrl) and 50 (left shift) just from pressing that one key (the below output is just from pressing it once): iain@lenovo-y540:~$ xev | grep keycode state 0x10, keycode 37 (keysym ...
