Re: Can't umount user-mounted device

Hi altair4 I changed my fstab and I can now mount/unmount it without sudo, but to get it to that mount point have to do so manually in the terminal, while it already auto-mounts to /media/iain/bc776cd0-4dae-42df-9d6c-6f9aa696ea91 when I plug it in, so I figure I don't really need it in fstab at all,...

Re: SOLVED - "Filename too long" when copying between ext4 partitions

How would I change that - I presume I'd need to re-format my /home partition in gnome-disks as ext4 / LUKS, but then would I need to tell Mint that I'm not using an encrypted home folder anymore?

Re: Can't umount user-mounted device

With a bit more testing, I've found if I manually mount it with the mount command, I can unmount it without sudo, but if it's been mounted automatically when I plug it in, I need sudo to unmount.

Can't umount user-mounted device

I've added a line to fstab for an external HDD which I want to mount at /mnt/old_data: UUID="bc776cd0-4dae-42df-9d6c-6f9aa696ea91" /mnt/old_data ext4 rw,user, noatime, nofail 0 2 I want to be able to mount/umount it without sudo, so included user in the options. When it's mounted, ll -d /mnt/old_data ...

Re: "Filename too long" when copying between ext4 partitions

Lightbulb moment - yes - I set up home drive encryption on the new one. That shortens the limits doesn't it?

Edit - turns out the filename limit for an encrypted partition is cut down to ~140 characters.

SOLVED - "Filename too long" when copying between ext4 partitions

Setting up my new laptop today, I installed Mint 19.3 Cinnamon on it, and took the HDD out of my old laptop and connected it to the new one via a USB enclosure, to copy all my stuff across. The /home partitions on the old and new HDD's are formatted as ext4. A number of my files (all music files) fa...

NordVPN doesn't always autoconnect

I use NordVPN on Mint 19.3 MATE. After installing it and logging into it, I set it to autoconnect using nordvpn set autoconnect on , and most times when I boot up I get a popup telling me it's connected. Every now and then though, I check in the terminal with nordvpn status and it tells me it's disc...

Re: Script to change MATE desktop wallpaper when locking/unlocking

OK, not in .bashrc as it runs every time I start a terminal. How do I get it to run once (and stay running) when I've logged in? I've searched but can't get one straight answer.

Script to change MATE desktop wallpaper when locking/unlocking

I've been searching round for a way to have the lock screen wallpaper different to the desktop wallpaper on MATE, or to change it when locking / change it back when unlocking, but I couldn't find out how to, or a ready mate script. So I cobbled together the below, primarly from this one when it came...

Re: Count files in certain nested directories

Thanks bjornmu - that does me fine for the count of files I figured out the total file size too - I was trying to think of a way to use find for files in a path ending in .thumbs, when I realised I could find the .thumbs folders themselves then use -exec on them. Bit by bit I peiced it together: fin...

Count files in certain nested directories

I've got a PHP script which accesses my photos folder, which has folders nested several levels deep, and creates thumbnails on the fly, in a subfolder named .thumbs within the folder those pictures are in. Is there a command I could use in bash, or a script, that could count up, and possibly get the...

Thanks & first donation

I've just upgraded from 19.1 to 19.3 and had a "...was that it?" moment when it was done. It was so simple. Took all of ten minutes, compared to the dark days of Windows 10 when a major update would see my laptop out of action for at least an hour, and would leave it running that bit slower and hott...

Intermittent file system checks on boot

Running Mint 19.1 Mate 64bit In the last few weeks I've been getting the file system check on startup ("press ctrl-c to cancel..."), but not every time. It only takes 5-10 secs to complete then everything continues as normal. I've checked the SMART data in gnome-disks and everything is "OK" - the HD...

Can't see text cursor in Caja

Running MATE desktop with a custom theme: Adwaita-dark controls / Mint-Y-Dark window border / Mint-Y icons / DMZ Black pointers. Quite happy with how it all looks, but when I'm renaming files in Caja, the text cursor is invisible - I presume it's set to the same as the background colour. I'm not afr...

Re: Can't get Samba working

Further update - I went into gufw and turned it off, tried File Manager+ again and it connected instantly.

I've found where my problem lies - how do I solve it (other than turning the firewall off every time)?

Re: Can't get Samba working

Update - out of interest I tried to connect to another Samba share in Caja, entered 127.0.0.1 and my username & Samba password, and my shares come up fine. Seems I just can't access them from outside. Do I need to change something in the firewall?
