Picasa photo viewer

I've just replaced my Windows 10 setup with Mint 19.1 MATE and so far I'm very happy with it, but the only thing I'd like to keep from the Windows days is the Picasa photo viewer. Not the main Picasa app so much, I hardly used that, but the full-screen viewer that I had JPG's and other picture files...

Re: Replacing my laptop's DVD drive with an SSD ... feasible?

Thanks for all your help, I'll probably go ahead and get an SSD and caddy in the new year, once Christmas is paid off  ... to be honest I hadn't realised SSD's were so affordable now, I hadn't looked since they were new and exotic. Interesting, I've also read that dmesg / hwinfo / your tool of ...

Re: Replacing my laptop's DVD drive with an SSD ... feasible?

I did some Googling about finding which SATA version I have, and came across using dmesg in Linux, so I've started up a Live CD session and put it into the terminal: mint@mint:~$ dmesg | grep -i sata | grep -i "link up" [ 10.492083] ata1: SATA link up 3.0 Gbps (SStatus 123 SControl 300) [ 11.316073]...

Re: Replacing my laptop's DVD drive with an SSD ... feasible?

My laptop's a HP G70-110EM from 2008/09, I'm not sure what SATA version it has but according to Windows Device Manager the HDD controller is an "Intel(R) ICH9M/M-E Family 4 Port SATA AHCI Controller - 2929". (edit: from the release dates on the SATA wiki page I reckon it's SATA 2) In the BIOS I have...

Replacing my laptop's DVD drive with an SSD ... feasible?

In my ponderings about how to install Linux (replace Windows or dual-boot) and how to partition, and/or whether to buy a bigger HDD, I struck upon the possibility of replacing my laptop's DVD drive with an SSD and put the operating system(s) on there. It looks quite straightforward on this site and ...

Re: Mint on an old laptop?

Thanks for all the advice folks, I've not had time to do anything about it over Christmas but it has given me chance to mull over the options ... I'm torn between wiping the HDD, re-partitioning it and having a Mint / Win10 dual boot setup "just in case" (and reinstalling Windows would probably do i...

Re: Mint on an old laptop?

An update: I'm writing this from a live CD session of Mint 19.1 MATE 64-bit ... I decided to start with the latest version (not expecting success) and work backwards until I found one that suited, and to my surprise the latest edition works like a charm ... well, it did until I installed Shotwell an...

Re: Mint on an old laptop?

Well then, all this time and I thought it was a 32-bit system  I seem to remember the documentation said its maximum RAM was 4GB which doesn't make sense if it's a 64 bit CPU, could something else limit it? Thanks for the advice so far, I'll download a few live discs, start with Mate x86_64 and...

Mint on an old laptop?

Hello, sort-of newbie here - I used Linux Mint a few years back and posted a bit on here, before returning to Windows and subsequently forgetting my login details for this forum  I'm looking to give Mint another go, but my laptop is getting on a bit so just wondering what my options are. My la...
